When I was 9, I remember playing through Frosty Forest and Mt. Freeze while I was snowed in and the power was out. It really felt like I was isolated in a snowy wasteland with my charmander partner. Red Rescue Team was my first pokemon game, and my first taste of what a good video game plot could be. Such memories :’) I played through Explorers of Sky as a treecko. If you needed to pinch a few gold ribbons off of Kecleon, you could use agility and a mobile scarf to outrun ‘em in the walls. Mega Drain came in handy to restore the hp you lost from your belly draining wall treks. I loved finding loopholes, lol.

*Entered!* Thanks so much for the comment! Such good memories to have! It's funny too how you remember the environment around you when you played. I remember being STUCK on Mt. Blaze as a kid (played as Treecko), and it was during a massive heat wave in summer break. I heard the music over and over again as I attempted to get up the mountain and take on Moltres. This game is RELENTLESS. Good strategy with the Kecleon haha. That is really smart. I think Mystery Dungeon is sort of underrated in terms of strategy. The loopholes kinda balance out the game. You can really exploit it if you know what you're doing. Though you're not necessarily cheating because you figured out something creative!

There's actually tracks from both Gates and Super. The medley in Oddity Cave is Gates and two tracks come from Super. Shiny Celebi is also in the game with unique dialogue. And there's actual new tracks, being I think a variant of Run Away, Unknown, and Puzzling... Which were made to make it so that the background had more music.

Thanks for the review. Mystery dungeon has special place in my heart, so to know that so many people enjoy like I do excites me a lot. When I was younger I had no idea what I was getting into with Red Rescue Team but i was enthralled by the story and being a Pokemon for the first time. When Explorers of time came into my life my love for the series grew as I was able to play as gen 4 mons (my favorite gen) and that when I started learning the story progression strats and growing a bigger bond with characters in the story. The greatest thing about MD is that my imagination runs wild every time I play. Even wrote mini stories about my game adventures. RTDX was great gateway back the series. Cheers to many more adventures in the MD world. I really want to play as a Grookey.

*Entered!* I agree so much! There's something so interactive about the game on terms of roleplay. Definitely wrote a couple fanfics about it in my day. I do still believe the Explorers games are pretty much the peak of Mystery Dungeon. Even when, in this day and age, I don't have enough time to play a lot of video games constantly - I always make room for a replay of Rescue Team or Explorers. Here is hoping for Gen 7-8 representation in the future. Grookey would be an awesome 'mon to play as!

I would say it's a great modern adaption but if you have trouble finishing them - this one isn't really going to change your mind. I'd say if you wanted to give the series another try (and have a DS), try to find a copy of the Explorers games. As much as I love the original and this remake, the Explorers games still reign supreme in my opinion. Not to mention, most likely cheaper if you can find them used.

I would love to play the remake but honestly i just love the pixelly graphics from back then too much so I'd end up playing it on my ds again, grinding for mew in the ruins. I really like the dungeon designs but not a big fan of the other graphics, if they were more realistic i think it would've been a better remake personally

I do prefer the sprites myself! Though the remake does a pretty fair job of doing them justice! That being said, other than many quality of life changes, the original is still very much playable over this one.

Great review, I'm so happy to see that there is so many people who love this game. Does anyone know if you can change the settings of the game to be more like the original used to be? As in limit your team to 4 team mates, turn off auto-run and turn off ep share? I love the original to bits and was so happy when I realized that this is a remake, however I feel like a biiiig part of why I used to love those games is because they were a lot more difficult so everything felt more like an accomplishment. And I feel like the auto-run feature in particular (and maybe the exp share) would just suck the fun out of the game for me (I know I could just not use the auto-run, but I know as long as it's readily available I'll probably end up using it anyways even though it will take a lot of fun out of the game for me)

As someone who loves the original game, I can get what you're saying but trust me when I say it doesn't automatically demolish the game's difficulty curve! It still is challenging just like the original. I would say to limit yourself to just refuse to recruit 8. I actually do this myself. Mostly because it's hard to navigate a dungeon with 8 Pokemon behind you. And a lot of the time, you're going to just go back in line to save them anyway. So it is perfectly viable to go solo or however a small party you want.

I kinda disagree about the game not having enough content. Sure the majority of the content comes from the original, but the postgame dungeons still retain a similar length and difficultly, enough to give many players hours of fun and challenge. Taking that and the ability to catch them all, and this game easily eclipses any main series game as far as content goes

DX is literally Rescue Team again with a few extra things. If they did Explorers next but with Pokemon up to Gen 8, I think that could be really cool in my opinion.

The difficulty is still super hard, it's BARELY dumbed down. All other pokemon levelling up isn't really making the game easier, it just makes the pool of pokemon you can use alot higher. You're still gonna get bashed at joyous Tower. Not to mention the "oh you game overed? You've lost ALL ITEMS AND MONEY YOU HAD"

Let me say the main series pokemon is widely influenced even though it's technically the same turn based game (to the point where story is a downer) at the start I'll admit I did hate pmd because I was a dumb 8 year old that didn't know how attack works heck the reason why I hated pokemon from my 10 to 13 old times. After I got reintroduce in the pokemon mainseries by my friends I got into it. Then I had a thought of the first pokemon game (which I stopped at TINY WOODS) (apologies here because this game was on my bootleg 37 in 1 cartrage) I gave it a shot then DAMN I never realized how good- no GREAT it was F- during that time I never thought a pokemon game would be dark. (As in trying to hunt down the MC). As I tried the other pmd games. Pfff.. None of em failed to make me emotional yet attached to a game SO much. My friend that introduced me pokemon didn't try the PMD series thou which is a bummer.... Storywise the Explorers Games Story was A MASTERPIECE Both from The Soundtracks and Story! Call me a crybaby because I can't play the whole story without feeling emotional as I completed it several times. "Spinoff? Masterpiece? First time I used that in the same sentence " + I'll say this but the ones who played Explorers at that time actually DIDN'T judge the game by its graphics unlike IGN saying it the game could be remade in a Gameboy and Lazy story and a GRIND (aka every pokemon game but they didn't complained about it)

I agree! Hunting down the MC actually is a rather dark turn for the story to take. And considering the difficulty spike that happens during the Fugitive phase, I imagine it made a lot of kids upset. I spent months on it personally. So coming back to Pokemon Square definitely felt like coming home after a long time away. Oh yeah, for sure. I'm always shocked at how emotional the Explorers games got. Recently I played it and I actually started crying when your main character starts disappearing. I WAS SHOCKED ONCE MORE. I can agree IGN didn't judge it on it's graphics for sure. Honestly, PMD didn't really look bad back then (I mean, it still doesn't since sprites seem to always age well and give a game a retro feel). It does seem ironic that they judged it on those facets. I can already see the reviewer having the copy in his hands, thinking "this look stupid", playing Beach Cave with it's upbeat friendly music, and immediately just being turned off by it and writing it off a cash-grab spin off. I refuse to do digital copies of the Pokemon games. Unfortunately a new copy in stores it's still $60. Look at pokemon games on DS and 3ds physical copies are like $100+ used. Don't get me started on a genuine pokemon emerald cartridge @_@ my brother is on the hunt for that game and it's insane at what people pay for them.

I get it totally! I hate getting digital copies, especially since I have a terrible track-record of buying something and THEN my friends suddenly want to borrow it. I really only buy digital copies if the sale is under $10. Physical is way safer. I would recommend eBay usually for switch games like these! It does suck because buying used doesn't necessarily support the game itself, but most of the time it's the best option. Not for retro games though. I did buy myself a Pokemon Emerald cartridge and good lord, it was expensive.
