Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon is the 4th (or 5th if you count the Wii Ware games) in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series. Released in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS, this game changed a fair bit about the series. Does that make it the best one in the series?

It's less of "being disliked" and more of "most people genuinely don't care." Mystery dungeon was from a few years ago with very few large KZbinrs picking up Rescue Team DX. Older franchises that barely receive updates are usually rather niche on KZbin, unless of course a game retains a massive active fanbase with big charismatic personalities, like in the case of TF2. Don't shoot me, I'm just the Peliper.

This may be my own personal take, but I believe this game is not just a great game, but a truly underrated masterpiece. It's a very well put together game with a pretty good story, better mechanics than the previous installments, great characters, all three acts were perfectly structured, and a soundtrack that the mystery dungeon games have never disappointed in, and this game was no exception. To this day, Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is my 3rd favorite video game of all time, and is one of the best I have ever played.

Every part of Super Mystery Dungeon had me hooked from start to end: even the beginning village arc had me hooked throughout. It's such a hard game to put down and it deserves so much more love than it gets. PSMD is right alongside EOS as my favorite PMD game.

The story may not be as "surprising" as Red/Blue Rescue Team or the Explorers games, but it still has moments that puts a smile on my face. The gameplay is satisfying and of course, being able to select our starter is a serious clincher. The beauty part here is that because you have the ability to choose your starter, it actually increases replay value. Play it as Riolu and Chespin, then play it again as Mudkip and Turtwig. I do wish they'd still let us use the other non starters like Cubone, Shinx and Meowth. Would've been awesome to have Zorua as a starter. Anyway....this game is definitely worth it for even casual players.

I love this game. It's story's told a little strangely, but on repeat playthroughs, I picked up on some things in regards to it, especially with it's potential foreshadowing. - The hill with the big tree foreshadows the final dungeon. It's a tree that overlooks the entire village, which is you and your partner's "world" so to speak, while the final dungeon is in a giant tree flying above the entire world. - The dungeon where you go to save the bullies takes place under a tree, and has you fighting an illusion of Giratina. You end up saving them after the fight by forgiving them, much like how Dark Matter is defeated by the partner accepting them. - Dark Matter is hinted at a few times prior to seeing it, or learning of it's name in Voidlands. The cutscene where we catch up with Rayquaza who bailed in the opening cutscene, he doesn't describe it as a Pokemon, in fact, he seems unsure about what it is, and this wouldn't make sense if it was Nuzleaf, the Beheeyem, or Yveltal. There's also the cutscene where you hurt the partner's feelings early on, and then you see someone talking "lIkE tHiS" about negative feelings. Finally, there's the bit after the Fire Island fight, where they show a bit of blackness forming on the tree that let you evolve. - During your final climb up Revelation Mountain, you'll get multiple cutscene breaks. After the final one, if you look at Nuzleaf, and hit A, instead of doing a cheerful pose like usual, he'll instead do his shivering animation. I also really like this game's usage of leitmotifs, largely using the partner's theme in fitting situations, such as Dark Matter Phase 2 (reaffirming that this is "their" fight). There's also the song "Treasure Within Your Heart" being mixed into "Time to Part Ways", which is fitting, since you're parting ways with the treasure in your heart (as corny as that sounds).

I know it's been months, but to add... There's a lot of suspicious stuff about Nuzleaf you don't pick up on until after the first play through. -Ampharos went to the village to investigate because of the turning to stone incidents, which you learn later is Nuzleaf's doing. That makes what he says on the hill make more sense on the second play through. His arrival is directly connected with Nulzeaf coming back from his 'trips', where he was turning Pokemon to stone the whole time. -When you come back to town during the arc before the Voidlands, Nuzleaf rushes back to the village to warn you that something happened while he was on guard duty.... But Nuzleaf was never appointed as a guard in the first place... that's why you had to sneak up to the mountain earlier in the game. -Nuzleaf has Frustration in his moveset, which is a move that is normally stronger the less friendship points you have.

I forgot to mention this in my first comment, but there are actually three Japan-exclusive Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games: Wildfire Adventure Squad, Tempest Adventure Squad, and Radiant Adventure Squad. They were released for the WiiWare, and although they've never been officially released in the west, a complete English patch was released for them just last year. Their stories are pretty much identical, with locations and Pokémon being version exclusive, and they're not all that long or deep. One unique mechanic in these games is that Pokémon can climb on top of each other to form stacks and launch attacks in a quick succession, kinda like the Alliance mechanic seen in Super.

Super is a personal favorite of mine that actually managed to change my life. I had gotten the game around the time of its release, but hadn't really touched it much at first for whatever reason. Then, just a few short years ago, I got back the urge to play it but just didn't really have the time to do so. That's when it happened. I was at a friend's place for a week or so catsitting for her while she was away when I was informed of some big news that I did not take very well. I won't go into detail what it was as it still hurts me greatly to this day, but it put me in a very depressed and emotional state. I was struggling to care for myself and didn't have anyone around who I could reach out to for help. I literally had to fight with myself to not grab a knife from the kitchen and hurt myself as I was in such great pain over what was going on. I desperately needed a distraction from my grief and decided to finally play Super Mystery Dungeon to help me get through this terrible time in my life. Not only did the game help distract me, but it also reignited a spark in me that I thought had died. I started drawing my own depiction of certain scenes from the game that stood out to me and added my own twist to them and posted them online. I got quite a few comments about my drawings that were really encouraging and made me happy. Someone even mentioned that they'd love to see me make an entire comic series about my own interpretations of the game. That comment made me remember something from when I was younger and really caught up in my love of the Explorers games. I had actually tried to make my own comic based on the Explorers game, but gave up on it has I didn't know how to make a comic, have the methods to make it happen, or how to post such work. Being older, more experienced, and having the knowledge I do now, I could make it finally happen. So, I got to work trying to make my very own PMD comic. Before I knew it, I was expanding the comic beyond Super and began working on comics based on ALL the Mystery Dungeon games! It became a very positive outlet for me that I desperately needed and saved me from one of the darkest times in my life. I still absolute adore the game and am still working hard to make the comics. I haven't been able to post any official pages yet, but I'm not giving up on this dream of mine. The ideas I've shared so far have been really inspiring for others and has even helped others confront their inner demons. I'm so excited to finally start posting the official pages and making my own mark in Mystery Dungeon history with a comic series that I hope will capture the heart of each story and help its readers find the strength and courage to face whatever challenges await them in life, just as Super did for me.

@@justalpha9138 I'm still suffering, but am much better now. I've built up a strong community of friends through my project and they've been able to help me through my issues while I also help them through theirs. The comic has been a great source of communication and expression for me that's also helped inspire others. I'm really grateful for what I have now, even if it started from a bad place. In fact, I've arranged the timeline of the comic for Gates To Infinity to be the first set in the series, and the main character of that story will also be starting from a very bad place before finding her own inner strength and be truly happy. It's rather symbolic of how I started when I began this project of mine. Best of luck with your project! I hope you make your dreams come true!

Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon is my favorite game of all time. I have never loved a story more than this game's and the gameplay was the cherry on top. I'm kind of sad you didn't mention the Voidlands because that was a big part of the story, but I know you weren't trying to explain the entire game's plot. I do agree that the player is given a lot of information in the 2nd half of the game, but I absolutely love how they did it. There was a lot of info but they split it up depending on where you were in the story. It's hard to remember the entire plot but if you name a location in the game, you can recall what generally happened there. The gameplay, the characters, the dialogue, and the plot all came together to make an amazing game that I hope will never be forgotten about.

My only gripe with Super Mystery Dungeon is how you only get set number of days between story missions, and no way to stockpile items if you come across a very difficult dungeon and you need a number of items (Oran berries and apples mainly) to get through the dungeon I had to stop playing because I reached a wall of difficulty (Cyndaquil and Totadile team in a mainly water type story dungeon) and I am not able to stockpile apples so that my belly doesn’t reach 0 before reaching the next checkpoint

I personally think this is the best Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game. As for the shortcomings you mentioned, here are my counterarguments: * The Expedition Society is better than the Guild because it's more compact. The Guild was so big that some of its members ended up getting very little attention compared to the others, while the Expedition Society balances out the screentime between its members much better. * The Dark Matter is executed much better than Bittercold. The latter had no dialogue or personality, unlike the DM. I also don't see that much problem with DM's foreshadowing. They first reveal the mystery, then the culprit, and then the controlling element behind everything. I don't see its introduction being more subtle to be a weakness. * I feel the game's story flows well. The first half is the partner being established and the player learning new things at a school, which makes sense for a school setting. And then the second half has the player and partner properly become part of the big plot that's going on, armed with the experience they learned in the first half of the game.
@npne1253
@npne1253 3 жыл бұрын
Eh, like he said the pacing could be better for the second half. Plus the ending despite being a twist was more of a shock than a sad one, probably because the ending theme didn't do it for me. Like seriously Time to Part Ways, should've been a reunion track. Plus the ending pacing could've been a lot slower just like the Gates ending to really let you sink it in where as in Super despite being a twist it was just too fast.

@@wikiuser92 They should've really made the moments after the twist longer as the current version is just a massive infodump and the partner just leaves.. I think having a third character like Xerneas to handle this info would be better, or at least make some better pacing and more appropriately themed music would be a great improvement. Gates to Infinity still has the best paced ending and does it better with it's own little unconventional ways, set pieces and twists on how you part ways with everyone. This to me is probably close to the best part of GTI and just edges out Explorers ending by a little
@wikiuser92
@wikiuser92 2 жыл бұрын
@@npne1253 The ending of GTI was a new twist for its time, too. In the first two sets of PMD games, the player character is mentally prepared for the goodbye when it happens, while the partner is not. In GTI, it's the player who really has to suffer the most of the departure, with the partner and the other friends being more ready to accept the departure. Also, something I liked about GTI's ending was that the player's life in the human world was actually acknowledged. In the first two sets of games, the player just casually ignores their human life and anyone important they may have there.

Something that wasn't touched on but I find worth noting is the structure of the final boss. (Gameplay spoilers obviously) Phase Two of the Dark Matter Core has no definite typing, instead switching its typing either after taking so much damage or after a set number of moves (I don't know which one). This changes up which moves you might want (or need) to use against it. Also, several of its attacking moves are tile specific, meaning your placement on the floor matters a bit move than in all other boss fights. Plus, Dark Matter Phase 2 is one of the best final boss scores I've heard; right up there with In The Finale from M&L: BIS.

I love this game, it is my first mystery dungeon game I’ve ever played. It also inspired my first pokémon theory: Dark Matter died, but since it seemed to somewhat change its mind at death, Arceus revived him as Xerneas to pay for his crimes in a way were he could do it happily. This explains a plot hole of why didn’t Xerneas warn the world of this threat or why Celebi never mentioned him when discussing what he saw in the past.

If they were going with the idea of Dark Matter being basically Bittercold 2.0, one twist I wish they made and set up was that Super was a sequel to Gates. Like you, I have forgotten much of Super's story due to the awkward pacing of the game. But if I recall correctly, the mistake Super's team made the first time around was defeating the Dark Matter, as opposed to accepting it (negativity) as a part of life. The player not having to return to the human world could be tied to the partner's actions at the end of Gates. Either way, as things are now, Super is a game that I enjoy from a gameplay and a partner standpoint, but it's pacing is very rushed towards the end. And the partner being the one to leave sort of felt tacked on? Like there was too much lore there that when the partner left, I was still comprehending what was just said.

I will say the “remake” did great when it comes to gym and championship rematches, more catchable legendaries and customization for our character, but the game lacked multiplayer, and they didn’t add the WiFi plaza from platinum to compensate or the battle frontier, took away capture the flag, you can’t make poffins with friends, contest are decent but less enjoyable not being able to dress up your Pokémon,following pokemon should’ve been better handled imo, and they still have yet to add multiplayer to the battle tower even though it was in the og Diamond/Pearl. Kanto fans, while Let’s Go isn’t the best, got blessed with some story changes, great following and rideable Pokemon, petting Pokémon and graphics. Johto fans got the battle frontier, Pokeathlon, access to more legendaries, portable berry pot, great graphics, WiFi plaza, and a great postgame being able to travel to Kanto. Hoenn fans got great added lore, good graphics for its time, flying on Latias/Latios, new mega evolutions and great characters. Here are my ideas for a 5th game in the PMD (Pokémon mystery dungeon) franchise: 1: more serious story. I feel like some of these games have "kiddish" stories and maybe something that's a hint darker to appeal to a larger audience. 2: Dialog options. Choosing what you say more often is well implemented in games like Skyrim and Fallout, and it would work well here, leading to branching paths and maybe multiple endings! 3: Run the guild: Here's a weird idea. Why can't you run the guild in the postgame, and get to send other Pokémon out on missions, build homes for more members and maybe battle your friend's guilds in a multiplayer strategy minigame! 4: Connect the normal Pokémon world and the PMD world. By setting it in the same universe, it allows for a reboot, as all the games are connected, and open up new possibilities, like encounters with humans and stuff like that. 5: Better hub world. Allow the guild/town to be more open, having multiple secrets to uncover, with dungeons, quests, items and maybe other allies inside! It would encourage more exploration and would be tons of fun. Hope these make it into the 5th game, if it ever comes out (here's hoping! :))

SPOILERS For 1. I mean we had a whole village willing to hunt our protagonists down without mercy for the sake of preserving peace in the first game, and then had been told indirectly to commit suicide because the protagonists were "causing a distortion in the balance of space" in the second game... Do those really count as "kiddish" stories? ;^^ But being able to run our own guild for a potential next game sounds amazing! :D

Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon is the game that got me into PMD as a whole. The gripping storyline, the amazing characters, the fabulous plot twists, and the fantastic gameplay are just a few of the things I loved about this game. It feels like a worthy Sequel to the Explorers games in the way it handles the evolutions of its story and game Design. The Looplet system is nearly perfect and the wands add so much depth. I can't forget the music. The music is as good of not better than Explorers of Sky. The inclusion of the entire GTI ost and the incredible post game. I rank the games as follows 5: GTI (Still love it despite being the weakest game) 4: Og Rescue team 3: Rescue Team DX Tied for 1: Super Mystery Dungeon and Explorers.

@@npne1253 Thanks, currently on my 8th attempt (the farthest run up to now)using Pikachu/Squirtle. About to fight the Poliwrath boss soon. By the way, the ruleset I use (if you are interested) is: -The two basic rules for nuzlockes. ‐No combat/healing items expect for: *Apples of any kind. *Elixirs/ Max Elixirs. *Progress Device(my console turns off sometimes, comes in handy). *Regular 3 slot Looplets and all the emeras.(or Weather one if hazards like Hail/Sandstorm are near, but I stick to just 3 emeras per looplet). -Aliances are allowed. -If both main characters die in battle, you lose and must reset. *There is an exception: Story mode pokemon like Espurr can't be considered dead if she faints because she appears quite a bit in the story as an ally. The pokemon that are considered dead if they faint are those who aren't part of the plot (Sylveon and most of orb connections, for example). -Since the game creates such dire situations for grinding levels, leveling up is tough, thus you probably won't overlevel against the more powerful Pokemon because the game will always have enemies stronger than your current level, that's why I use emeras. *You can't use overleved Pokemon(except those that the story demands for plot progression like the Expedition members, children from the school, etc.). ***Lastly... have fun! You will view PMD in a new light if you decide to try it. Remember that this is just what I use to play the nuzlocke, so don't worry if you don't agree with something.

The main overarching villain of the Kirby series is also called Dark Matter, and is also a manifestation of the negativity of the world. I felt that Super Mystery dungeon was the one that really nailed the gameplay. The looplets helped provide some meaningful choice on how to set up a party beyond the pokemon themselves, and the emeras provided the sort of RNG I like. That, along with the motivated system really helped make the game feel far less monotonous. I also preferred recruiting pokemon being tied to missions than off a random chance of defeating one. Just a shame the story, for me, fell flat hard in a few key ways.

My theory for Dark Matter originally was that it was the same one from Kirby, and with Star Allies, that theory looks like to be right. Star Allies implies that Dark Matter(or Void) can exist in all dimensions, and it led to people theorizing with Smash (on TV tropes) on what it would like in all of the worlds of Smash. While I doubt the entire theory, I do agree that this Dark Matter is one of those reincarnations of negative energy alongside Sonic's Gaia duo as example of a Dark Matter/Void pair as one born of positive energy and one of negative energy. Yes, Dark Matter won't always be a force of evil as Gooey has demonstrated.

So um, kinda spoilers for super and gates, as if anybody here hasn't played nor seen the plots of those games. Okay, but hear me out, what if... our partner...in Gates...is Mew. Now, now, hear me out! Our partner says that we fought Dark Matter with Mew but failed. Right? You can't expect me to think that it just happened off screen! So what if...the bittercold IS Dark Matter. I mean they both are basically the same thing, just slightly different, and we know they all happened rather close together. So what if fighting the bittercold is when we failed. When Mew failed. What if the canon timeline is that we didn't come back. We went back to our lives in the human world, until our partner brought us back in Super. To fight Dark Matter again. Think about it, huh, huh? It also helps that I always chose Snivy for my partner for both games too. But hah! Canon! Not really. Kinda. It'd be kinda cool.

Regarding the comment about the lack of foreshadowing for dark matter, I understand how it could detract from the story for others. But this is the way I see it; Dark Matter’s only ever defeated when the partner ACCEPTS them. Dark matter isn’t just a culmination of negative emotions like Bittercold was, it’s rejected or bottled up negative emotions. This is why few react to it at first. Everything’s being kept in. I think the initial lack of foreshadowing works in a way, because upon bottling up emotions, it eventually becomes too much to the point where it all comes down on you at once. Much like the information learned in the endgame. One way or another, these emotions need a vent. Mew’s mistake was trying to get rid of the negative emotions instead of working through them. The mistake that the partner remedies.

honestly I feel that gates to infinity's bittercold and super's dark matter both feel like two halves of a great villain like the bittercold fit quite well with the themes of the rest of the game and the build up to it was great but the payoff was kind of disappointing as it was just a big snowflake with no personality to speak of dark matter on the other hand spoke, had some pretty freaky abilities (the voidlands and void shadows seriously freaked me out when I was younger), and had a good payoff with the partner having to accept that the emotions that created darkmatter as a part of life in order to finally get rid of it but the buildup was lacking and it kind of felt out of place with the rest of the game tonally and thematically. I think if we got a villain with a combination of these traits, manipulating pokemon who were mistreated by an increasingly hostile world like the bittercold, giving pokemon being manipulated some kind of freaky power and the protagonists having to accept that the emotions that created them are a part of life to defeat them and actually having them speak like darkmatter, and just give them a design that isn't just a big snowflake or just a sphere

Yeah I can't even shead a tear for the actual twist ending but that's me) Xatu tells you that there's a treasure on every continent and after you collect them you have to go to the Mystery Continent to a dungeon to summon something that leads to a reunion. Thing is that those are only tales, and Xatu only knows the treasure location on the Sand Continent but Nuzleaf,Beheeyem Yvetal and all the expedition members help you search where are the locations of those other treasures and the dungeons they're in. They can only find the next one after you cleared the current one found and finally you can head to a dungeon on the Mystery Continent after you collected all the treasures to summon a final boss where after defeated, you can finally be given the chance to reunite with your beloved partner! All the dungeons will have boss fights but they'll be fairly matched around your level. Also thinking about it, the treasure could be Time Gears and final boss be Dialga as a throwback!

It has the best gameplay by far, a very cool story as always, an even better soundtrack (but that's more subjective), the 3D is very cool contrary to what most people tell. You should try to not get yourself blinded by the big mist of nostalga towards the gen 4 and try to open your mind. I'm not here to change your preferance, I can't, of course explorer will stay your favorite, but you could at least not compare them all the time and see the own qualities of this game. -Myself, a Super enjoyer who's starting to get angry to see al explorer comments everywhere when there's nothing to say about it.

2:22 i'm gonna challenge you here. Looplets aren't an improvement, It's flawed because they moved all the IQ abilites and a lot of Held item effects to the Emeras. Emeras are worse then iq as they're necessary to increase and improve your power but you can't keep them. It's cool but fundimentally flawed game design when players want to feel like they're progressing and getting more powerful. what's the point when you're pitifully weak. The IQ system was superior and had way more player control AND gave direct upgrades without effecting your pokemon's ability to function. I hate that Chun soft keeps trying to replace the IQ system when each system is fundamentally worse. Rare Qualities are cool, but, because the game has you constantly recruit pokemon you basically have meat shields almost always on demand which trivializes a lot of the game. Rare Qualities are simply too powerful and common yet too few unless you add bodies which just insanely broken in general. OH and let's not forget your PARTNER THROWS YOUR SET ITEMS....seriously, who's smart idea was it to make it so your partner throws the items you want to use yourself. If this was the original Rescue team or Explorers, you could turn that off, which you cant. you should have COMPLETE control over your partner's AI and what you let them do. Add on the fact the game is very item usage heavy and pokemon THEMSELVES feel very weak which just drives the player not to use their main duo more. so, no, i can't say this is the best game Mechanically when there are flaws that are rooted deep within the core of their changes. the only good change was wands, those things are awesome.

Super isn't my favorite game and I do think Gates built up the Embidiment of Negativity final boss better. Though, I do like the switch of how Hero and Partner defeat it. Gates felt a bit too cirucumstantially convenient and cheesy with the Hero being able to withstand the Bittercold better than everyone else because... they're a human, that's the reason. And while I know a bit of cheese is to be expected of a game for this age demographic the lack of any setup to how everyone in Gates hoping for your success actually magically helping was a bit ??? to me? It's been a long time but Super had a similar "dont give up" moment where everyone's hoping for your success, sure. But the fact that in the end the Partner realizes life *can't* exist without *some* negativity is a lot better to me. Everyone/evermon is not going to be friendly and happy all the time, whether due to their own life experiences making them jaded (like Virizion) or any other reason. But the partner learns to accept that but overall try and put more positivity back into the world, and THAT allows Dark Matter to be defeated. Oh, and also 10/10 for soundtrack, this game had some bangers.

@@killjoy7346 Right, it was Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Gates to Infinity. Also, Pokémon Legends Arceus is the best Pokémon Mystery Dungeon game.

I enjoyed the game but the recruitment system was garbage and pissed me off as long time fan of the games lol

Something about the dialogue in this game made the story feel very childish. I can't tell if it was a decision of the translators or if it reflects the original dialogue. Still a great game though

Pokemon Mystery Dungeons is such a wasted series. Ultimately, rescue and explorers feel the same wgen they could have been two distinct sides of the series.
