The Pokémon Company REALLY should've let Gamefreak iron out these issues before release, this is just unprofessional. Delaying the game wouldn't have hurt anyone, I don't think anyone would've complained considering the scope of the game. It definitely needed another year of development that's for sure. Somewhat related but is it just me or is The Pokémon Company trying to turn Pokémon into the Japanese equivalent of Call of Duty or pretty much any sports game made by EA? Almost yearly releases with bare minimum post-launch support.

Ive been playing this game on emulator. It runs Slightly better. Keyword, slightly. It runs terribly slow and thats with really good hardware. Besides that, all of the graphical bugs that you mentioned, as well as some emulator specific bugs have been major points of annoyance. I agree with what you said though. The game is really good, just poorly executed. If you ask me, this shouldn't even have been launch day experience. They should have fixed most of these issues before shipping. (Launch day updates should not have to exist) The fact that this was allowed to release to the public gives me serious concern for the play-testing team over at gamefreak. Because ask yourself this: Would you really work on a game under license for Nintendo, and think this is up to standard? If CD-Project Red was forced to refund a big chunk of their sales for their game, I think GameFreak owes a lot of us money.

Bro, I love the story and characters and designs. Plus I believe the game’s main and side quests are pretty ambitious for a Pokémon game. That being said, oh my god this game’s optimization is ATROCIOUS. And the battle mechanics are so regressive and slow! Every Pokémon game should continue to speed up the mechanics and turn-based pace. Not only that, but the loading in general takes up minutes worth of time over the course of an entire gameplay. So much bad with a game that, in my opinion, should have been so much better. They had the right direction, but terrible execution.

The terrible optimization, stripping away of long-standing features, and continued degradation of existing features is embarrassing. Legends had little to no issues running battles in the open world, and then the very next game can't hack it. Legends had texture, framerate, and pop-in issues, and then the next game has the same issues, but worse. Legends let you catch Pokemon without initiating battle, and then the next game doesn't. Sw/Sh had reusable TMs and also added TRs that could be farmed for more move variety, and the next mainline game just has single use TMs. Sw/Sh had set mode and let you turn off battle animations, and the next mainline game removes those features. US/UM had a full national dex, and then the next game doesn't while Game Freak tells lie after lie about removing it. Mega evolution was included alongside Z-moves in S/M, and then the next game abandons both. X/Y and OR/AS made exp share optional, and then the next games make it mandatory while still failing to balance around it properly. And that's just off the top of my head, but there's surely more that Game Freak is too incompetent and impassionate to handle.
@DPadGamer2 жыл бұрын
Of all those points, I will push back slightly on them going from reusable tm's back to single use. That is true, but I think it was a neat decision to implement TM material (earned by fighting or catching wild pokemon, as well as a reward for various other stuff) to allow for crafting TM's. Each TM doesn't require any materials, and from what I've seen they thematically make sense (Fire Spin requires Growlithe Fur & Torkoal Coal) which is a nice touch. It gives another reason to farm wild pokemon aside from the usual, and TM materials can be traded for League Points, which can be used in the shop in place of the normal money if you wanted, which means that you can technically become rich without ever participating in trainer battles. Its not a perfect system / change, but I can see a creative reason for the difference which is why I thought I'd push back. As for everything else; I'm pretty sure you're totally correct.

@synysterdawn89132 жыл бұрын
@@strawdeath263Yeah, its just regressing in one area to justify including a new feature that would otherwise add nothing of value on its own merits. Having the combination of TMs and TRs is honestly great because it gives players a good reason to explore and complete content to find TMs, and gives extra incentive to do whatever activities reward TRs. The best way to improve on that system would be to include ways to also buy or exchange TRs assuming the RNG just isn’t on your side and you end up getting a ton of TRs that you don’t want. I don’t remember if such a thing already existed in Sw/Sh because those games are also dumpster fires, but it would be all the more perplexing if that was all already present and Game Freak just abandoned it for a blatantly worse system.

I can't understand how this game came out after Legends Arceus but it looks and runs so much worse. It really feels like a beta test for Arceus' engine. Supposedly Game Freak had a bunch of newbie programmers on the project which seems like a bad idea for such a high-profile, ambitious game. There's been a performance patch or two since release but lots of people didn't notice any difference after them. From watching other glitch videos, the battle lighting bug is caused by the Terastallize button. Somehow. Also from watching Boundary Break, everything not in the player's cone of vision is just not loaded to save memory but uhhhh it doesn't feel like it helps at all.

As someone whose job it is to make video games (I have a bachelor's of science in game art) while some of these things are disappointing. Others like slowdown of models far in the distance, world clipping high up on areas like mountains, and far off objects despawing are very common hardware management tactics that are used in the industry to save on frame rate and poly count. The common tactic is if the player doesn't need to see it while their playing that section of the game then it doesn't exist in world. This is a benefit because it allows you to cram more stuff in a scene with the same amount of poly count and frame rate. While I agree cameras can be janky that's an easy fix. I also see you failed to mention the absolutely BEAUTIFUL textures on litterally everything. Pokemon have individual scales and roughness. You can see creatively designed fur and textile patterns. Pokeballs look fantastic. It's a give and take here, in my opinion game freak was trying to create a texture heavy experience to help make their slice of life feel of the game fit better. The only issues I have are the lack to buy base uniforms, and the convoluted breeding mechanics. Other than that the game is pretty solidly made. It always annoys me how people only focus on graphics or fps rather than finding the beauty in their favorite games. Graphics and fps mean jack sh** if the story is poor, the mechanics are broken, and everything is blocked by a paywall. Also other games that have these exact same problems that no fan of that franchise complains about it : Skyrim (it's actually praised as one of the greatest games of all time though it's a buggy, glitchy mess far more egregious than this.) Red dead redemption Grand theft auto Dark souls Sonic Ect. Pretty much every game you've played since the 90s has these similar types of loading techniques used it's just on how the developers decide to partition things and load certain techniques. Sometimes it's done well and sometimes it's done better.
@DPadGamer2 жыл бұрын
Nice writeup. "It always annoys me how people only focus on graphics or fps rather than finding the beauty in their favorite games. " its a true statement, but these game's graphical / fps issues are persistent obvious, so I don't think I'm being unfair by pointing them out. And your point about "other games that have these exact same problems" just doesn't make sense to me, because literally all of those game series have been highly criticized for their issues. If hardcore fans of those games aren't criticizing them, thats not reflective of gamers of a whole.
@justin92022 жыл бұрын
@@DPadGamer while you are correct I do feel your a little harsh on gamefreak here with how you layed out the critique. I do agree it is at a point where they should be able to fix it in post, but it would also be good to understand "why" things are done the way they are and how they can be improved. I've always approached critiques with the phrase "that's good, but..." For example "while the texture quality is fantastic in these games, it is difficult to overlook some of the issues with clipping and camera angles." This allows both a positive point and the negative viewpoints to get across thus giving a more accurate critique of the game as a whole. It's also good to mention that as of yet there are no game breaking glitches, or seriously poor camera issues with models, which were notorious in 3d Pokemon games in the past I'm sorry for rambling. I tend to do that often (love making game art so passionate). That's why I feel it's more a writing error on your part in this video and there are some fantastic aspects of the art and textures that I think the video overlooked entirely. I just don't want people to get too much of one side and be turned away from what is objectively a fantastic pokemon game (minus camera and clipping issues and some other mechanics issues- see comments on breeding and outfits).

The entire Bayonetta trilogy, coming out of a company with far less budget, runs flawlessly on the same hardware, using the same programming techniques to manage resources and run smoothly, and looks leagues better than any Pokemon game released on the switch. This isn't a question of why these things are done, everyone knows about these techniques, it's a matter of it just looking outright terrible, as a result of a complete mismanagement of resources. Instead of putting so much effort into giving all the pokemon immaculate textures, they could've put half of that effort into making the terrain not look like cardboard, and if the pokemon themselves had a slightly lowered poly count, it could've made the need for decreased framerates on distant objects FAR lower, making everything look less choppy. They put all their resources into the trailer-genic flashy stuff that could've worked just as fine if their quality had been cut in half, instead of the stuff that actually contributes to the total experience that players will be looking at for almost the entirety of the game. It doesn't matter how much passion you put into something, if it comes out looking terrible then you have failed yourself.
@Cri_Jackal2 жыл бұрын
As for the examples you brought up, Sonic is an absolute mismanaged mess with tons of issues in almost every game, so throw that one out the window. GTA, Dark Souls, and Red Dead have never looked anywhere near as terrible as these pokemon games, they actually allocated their development resources correctly and didn't over rely on these techniques to the point of it being distracting, the original Demon Souls still looks good even today, whereas Scarlet and Violet look dated on day 1.

I don't see why any game, open world or not, should be plagued with performance issues on launch. This game, along with those examples given are AAA games, sold as complete works. Not an open access / indie title that needs funding to continue development. I never claimed the game was rushed. People are picky, thats true, but any complains levied against the game in this video are about issues. And yeah I'd say these games are better than Sword and Shield, but that doesn't mean you should settle for graphical hiccups and issues with lag.

you game freak apologists are really stupid. it's no wonder they don't care about the quality of their games, because of mentality like yours. I bet you bought the double pack with a huge smile on your face.

@@Hithere-uz6wd he or she said an incredibly stupid comment, and I called them out for it. It's that simple.
