My first playthrough of shield was a mostly all ice team with the exception of Greedent who was my Starter and a Driftbloom later on. Gen 8 is great for doing mono type teams since so many pokemon are available early.

Why? Grass type is at an inherent disadvantage being weak to or resisted by at least 1 of the gym leaders Pokemon in ALL 8 GYMS, it’s weak to Viola’s team, Grant’s Amaura, Korrina’s Hawlucha, Ramos’s Weepinbell and Jumpluff, Clemont’s Emolga, Olympia’s Sigyliph and Wulfric’s entire team. Grass is resisted by Viola’s team (again), Korrina’s Hawlucha (again), Ramos’s team, Clemont’s Emolga and Magneton, Valerie’s Mawile, Olympia’s Sigyliph (again), And Wulfric’s Abomasnow. Along with being weak to everything on Drasna’s team except for Druddigon (which resists it) being weak to Flannery’s whole team, Resisted by Wikstrom’s whole team except for Probopass, and weak to his Scizor, it’s also weak to Diantha’s Hawlucha, and Aurora, and resisted by her Goodra, and her Gourgeist. It’s super effective against nothing until Olympia’s Slowking, and is strong against Siebold’s whole team, except for Gyarados, which it’s neutral against. Everything else is neutral. Grass type sucks in XY, that’s one of the reasons people don’t use Chespin, it’s not strong enough to counter the overpowering weakness of the Grass type. Oh yeah, and the only grass type that can learn surf, is only available by using surf, or by getting to a point in the game that surf was required to reach, so, unless you waste a slot with an HM slave, the game becomes impossible. Regardless, my point is proven, using grass types is a bad choice for the game that makes it impossible to beat the game with only ever having grass types.

Something I realized in the course of my own Sword Hardcore nuzlocke is that stone evolutions are absolutely broken in the early game. There's a move tutor present in every single pokemon center and using it is free, so when I caught a nuzleaf on route 5 (in between milo and nessa), I was able to instantly evolve it and teach it fake out and leaf blade, which made the nessa fight absolutely free. I also was able to sweep other non-boss fights with it, and it was a decent pivot down the line as well. Nessa might be a bit less free with no dynamax but there's really no reason to not use that leaf stone as soon as you find something that you can use it on.

I love the Galarian variant of Zigzagoon's evolution line. I had an absolutely LEGENDARY encounter where I accidentally ran into a Lv 34 Haunter as soon as I entered the Wild Area in the beginning of the game. Luckily for me, Galarian Zigzagoon is part Normal type. It could only hit me with Curse, and Zigzagoon had Lick. I took it down after many Potions to stave away the Curse. What a powerhouse baby.

One thing I found helpful during my recent Fighting-only Shield Nuzlocke was that they got rid of the penalty for evolving Stone Evolution pokemon right away. The Move relearner gives you the entire learnset they used to miss out on! My Poliwrath enjoyed that buff XD

Leon's one non-Charizard-related braincell exhausted itself giving him the idea of using the cape as a billboard for all his sponsorship patches, the rest of his outfit just kind of fell together. Grass monotype would be neat. Third most common type giving lots of options, but tied with rock for most weaknesses at 5, and tied with bug for most resisted at 7, combined with it having amazing support and unique options makes it a fun but complicated type.

Hey I don’t know if you are going to see this but I have some criticism/advice for when/if you are going to do another gen 8 nuzlocke. I have seen another youtuber do this and it makes the early game a bit more balanced. You essentially give yourself the possibility to catch every encounter possible in the wild area before the first gym while the gym leader only has 2 Pokemon, to me that seems a bit too easy and unbalanced. But what would make it more balanced and to me also more interesting is that when you arrive at the wild area you have 1 initial encounter and after that you get one encounter in the wild area for every gym you beat. Still a really good video man.

I see many people confuse this, but Charizards G-Max Wildfire doesn't trap your Pokémon like Firespin does. It only does damage to every non-fire type on your side for 3 turns (f.e. in doubles it would damage both of your Pokémon every turn). But great video nonetheless! Just recently found your channel and been enjoying your commentary a lot!

It's proboboy worth mentioning, although a Dark Monolocke *might* be an exception because strong v Ghost weak v Fighting; that Sword is generally *by far* the easier of the two game. Alister is harder than Bea. Gigantamax Gengar is way more dangerous than Machamp. Melony is harder than Geordie. Dynamax Collosoil has x2 4-times weaknesses, while Lapras has none, and it's G-max move sets up Auroura Veil. Zacian is just flat-out better than Zamazenta; and thus the postgame fights against Berzerk Zacian/Postgame Hop are MUCH harder in Shield than Sword. Every point where the two games diverge; Shield is harder than Sword. Also; Dark might be the best monolocke type for Leon. He always has at least 2 Dark-weak pokemon; three with some starter picks; and he has NOTHING that resists Dark.
