On the topic of Dragon Quest Inspiration, both Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori were huge fans of the series- Playing Dragon Quest 3, Sugimori found an extra item that Tajiri needed. Sadly, there is no way to transfer items between save files; so the thought " well, wish we could trade ". And that is the idea for where trading came from for the Pokemon series. In fact, Ken Sugimori's original art of the 251 Pokemon are done in a watercolor style similar to the art style of Akira Toriyama, the illustrator for Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball.

All of these except for Monster Rancher (surprisingly), as well as Pokemon and Dragon Quest have at least one dogu. Dragon Quest has several dogu, Yugioh has Dogu and Orichalcos Shunoros, Digimon has Shakkoumon, Pokemon has Claydol, Bakugan has Clayf and Yo-Kai Watch has Maiden Ruin (which in spite of what the localized name implies is _not_ an iron maiden. Its japanese name is literally just Dogushakkō )

It makes sense since the original gimmick of Pokémon was to be able to use the monsters you’d usually see in an RPG in your party so of course they’d take inspiration from Dragon Quest monsters its literally the RPG of RPG’s.

Satoshi tajiri was directly inspired by dragon quest. He basically wanted cooperative dragon quest when his m8 had 2 of an item he wanted but couldnt get. Then he had the idea to use the link cable to trade instead of battle like it was normally used for.

That would be really cool because all of these games have Monsters that are based on the same mythological creatures, like Ninetales(Pokémon), Tamamo (Shin Megami Tensei) and Kyubi (Yokai Watch) are all based on the Kyūbi-no-Kitsune from Japanese Yokai mythology.

All the Japanese catch ‘em all games play with each others designs. You could do a whole other video with shin megami tensei/ persona and Pokemon or digimon and Pokemon. It’s just gonna be a lot of cyclical references. People doing this debate about palworld just need to play it honestly and see how it differs from all these other games. They’ve all got their own strengths and weaknesses and they’re all arguably fun in their own right.

Not really. I play all of those games. I can't think of just one similar SMT demon that looks like a Pokémon. Even when they are based on the same thing like Koppu Tengu looks nothing like Shiftry. Jibanyan looks nothing like Pikachu, neither does any Yo-Kai Watch monster resemble any sort of Pokémon. Digimon is freaking insane in their character designs. Out of like 1500+ none of them even resemble any sort of already pre existing outside of like Snatchmon and Mewtwo. And that's just one out of literally hundreds, almost a thousand On the other hand, whenever I'm talking about Palworld with my friends I almost subconsciously just end up calling them my Pokémon names because of how downright similar they are. Oh that yellow one with the minigun is Electabuzz Totoro. Oh that's Lucario. That lion is Luxray. They literally have no individual identity besides just being Pokémon inspired designs with guns

Interesting similarities. I'm a huge Pokémon fan and I went into Palworld expecting an alternative to Pokémon. And I was so happy to find that the game offers so much more. Even tho I liked the gen 9 games and Legends Arceus. It's gonna be hard to go back them after experiencing Palworld I'm sure there are many other level-headed Pokémon fans in the same boat. I don't understand why nintendo doesn't treat it's money printing franchise with respect, like it does with Zelda. Watching nintendo and their fanboys have a meltdown over palworld is hilarious.

As a Creature Designer, that is just straight up cope. The pose isn't even the same. They're birds, there's a very limited amount of positions a avian animal can be positioned in that gives a solid frontal clear view for us, the players.

There's a lot that are just the same base idea, ie same yokai or animal. But then there are some that are just way too close to not have been inspired. I've always wondered why the Nido's had horns, I get that they turn into Kaiju but it seemed weird to design the base form with one or have a rabbit be poison and turn into a monster. But Bunnicorn explains that instantly. Same with Grimer/Muk and Geodude, they don't seem to have any real yokai or cultural origin but it makes sense if they based them off Muddy Hand and Magmalice, even Graveller and Golem and their explosions have zero yokai inspiration (I've tried finding it because I wondered about the connection for years) but basing them off RockBombs makes total sense. Even Haunter and Ghastly don't seem to have a "reason" for being Gas based Ghosts instead of straight up ghosts but then look at Miasma and there it is, a perfect explanation. Heck looking through the Dragon Quest bestiaries of 1-3, theres a flying Scorpion (Waspion/Scornet/Rumblebee) thats an exact match to what would eventually be Gligar and Gliscor.

It would be nice, there are some Digimon designs stolen from Pokemon but also there are several Pokemon that are Digimon's ripoffs, like Trevenant/Cherrymon, Grookey/Monmon, Torterra/ElDradimon, Groudon/Guilmon, Kinglang/Hagurumon, Maractus/Palmon, Manaphy/MarineAngemon etc. Also Pokemon stole from Digimon several elements like the eggs (eggs were not presents in the first pokemon game, they were introduced in the second game which came out after the first Digimon V-Pet), the mega evolutions (totally ripoffs of mega digivolutions and burst modes in Digimon), the concept behind the partner monsters, the Z-moves (stolen from Data Squad), the variants etc.

There's certainly some similarities and monsters being designed around the same inspirations - yokai, dragons, dinosaurs etc... - The execution is different in every example however. Given that the originals are pixel art - you can clearly see that they are very different. Now if you compare to Palworld - the Pals are very clearly copied from the various pokemon - some are blatantly sculpted over the top of pokemon models.

"Improved" is BEYOND flattering. Dragon Quest Monsters The Dark Prince and all of the other Dragon Quest Monsters games make mainline Pokemon look like a joke. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon remains the most highly praised Pokemon games and those games, when ya get down to brass taxes, are just Dragon Quest games with Pokemon in them.

What is great about this video is that it mirrors the criticism from Pokemon fanboys/fangirls; as one of the millions who play Palworld (also I had no interest in Pokemon or other monster catching games before Palworld) people could do with less complaining and more enjoying the game. Imagine the creators of palworld and pokemon collabed the internet would go to shit, anyways i consider the pals of palworld to something different than actual pokemon sure some do seem to be "rip offs" but i consider them their own type of creatures and while i do see the similarities they are basically something else. The only thing difference I've seen in palworld is that you present day weapons to fight the pals while in pokemon you throw mud, snow, sticky traps, and pokeballs at the pokemon to fight them you don't use your bare hands to fight them which makes sense in modern times but in hisui which takes place in the past you hardly use the environment at all except to hide or run away because the only thing you can do is throw mud, stickys, or pokeballs which are useless if the pokemon is angry and chasing you so why can't we use our fists in the past to defend ourselves if our pokemon have all been defeated and we can't get away because we're surrounded. I'm not defending palworld at all I'm just pointing out a few things and differences as I'm neutral to this whole ordeal so please don't attempt to crucfy for my opinion cause it's as good as anyones

Everytime anything related to monster friendship comes out whenever a pokemon "fan" finds it they try to claim it as pokemon clone, look at games like Yokai watch & shows like Digimon. Digimon because it came a year later has always been called a copy.

There’s some designs that really are quite close- but a lot of these just resemble the original animal more than the DQ monster (ie a worm or a manta). There’s some unmistakable similarities, but nothing compared to Palworld’s blatant theft

Yes, although you’ve got to also frame it in time. The earlier Pokémon were designed with reference to prior catch ‘em games in mind. This was almost two decades ago which is also why looking at the original sprites is important. Parody in Japanese media is pretty standard. Just don’t put “Goku the Saiyan” in your manga and you will avoid punishment. If you put in a strong super human alien dude with spiky hair, you are fine.

Yeah, a lot of pokemon are within the first gen only, which is widely known for not aging very well. I do not play DQ so I do not know if there are designs within newer gen pokemon that look like other DQ monsters, but I see that the general difference with most of these compared to Palworld is that one makes the monster from a description while the other makes the monster by taking parts of those monsters to create a new one. Very few in both games are eerily and "suspiciously" similar to the point of being stolen. I feel like tangela is actually a big copy, it has the same colors and vine motif, same face, very similar to robinquill's situation (albeit robinquill is an amalgamation of multiple pokemon, as mentioned earlier a bit). I'm not gonna deny the similarities, I am disappointed that they exist, yet I still feel that Palworld, despite very few casualties, is more unacceptable.

This video shows how inspiration works, by showing monsters that have the same concept, but even if they have the same concepts, you can distinguish each one of the designs that are presented. What palword does is putting parts of random pokemon and make a "new" design using those cutted parts of pokemon and putting those parts like if it was clay or glue. In palworld monsters, even if the concepts are completely different, you see nothing but pokemon, and those look like fusions of some pokemon like if it was infinite fusion

a lot of reaches on what's "similar," like the oddish one. but pokemon also didn't steal dragon quest's sprites and edit them, no matter what's similar or not. at least one 3D artist for palworld straight up ripped entire models from pokemon and edited them, the most obvious examples being the duck that came from pancham, the primarina knockoff, and the wolf that uses lycanroc's model

For someone that have played both franchises several times. Not ONCE have I made a comparison that pokemon and dragon quest monsters look a like. They may have some similiar features but its not close to being similiar. However pokemon and pals in palworld literally look like twins, many of them. This is coming from a neutral stand point. I love pokemon and dragon quest and I think palworld looks amazing and I would like to give it a try if I wasnt busy with other games atm

This is mostly comical, they look nothing alike other than being the same animal. They look even more different in the original sprites, although a few of them could be inspired. Unlike with Palworld, you can't get to Pokemon designs by mixing a few monsters from DQ.

That’s the point, though. Also they already did one of Palworld vs Pokémon. The point is that parody is normal in Japanese media and games. Most catch-em games tend to borrow from others. Sometimes artists for an older game get hired by another and they’ll basically use their old designs. Designers in Japan will often borrow base character concepts or visual design and that’s okay.
