It's crazy to me how ignorant people are regarding Pokemon and Dragon Quest to the point where people don't realize that DQM not only never tried to be Pokemon, but it was actually Pokemon that took inspiration from Dragon Quest.

Pokemon fans that try to champion Pokemon's "complexity and depth" with its gameplay is just a hollow excuse. They don't ACTUALLY care about depth or complexity. Cuz if they DID, they would play games like Shin Megami Tensei or Yo-Kai Watch 3 where more game states have to be taken into account. The very moment such people are proven wrong with how shallow Pokemon is compared to other monster collectors, they will IMMEDIATELY turn around and say Pokemon is better for being simple. It's not about simplicity or complexity and never was. They just wanna claim Pokemon is better no matter what and no matter how much they have to flip flop.

Be careful when you say "they". We aren't a single thing. And most people do care. I care. And I still play Pokémon. Also, what do you mean by complexity? Is it story wise, lore, gameplay? You are being too vague here with your argument and also saying that the pokémon fanbase is a single thing, almost like a single being. We aren't.

If you ask a fan why he/she likes Polemon, some people will say that they like the Pokémon themselves, others will say that they like the gameplay, others will say they like to play and explore the regions. Everyone likes Pokemon for a different reason. I like to explore, I like the lore.

This series back when it was dragon warrior monsters was such a different approach to the Pokémon formula and a nice surprise that I genuinely preferred it. The later version of Pokémon took the idea of monster fusion and changed it to breeding. The same idea of borrowing happened with digimon, which not only introduced us to transformation shifts like digivolution and Jorgress; which they copied years later in Pokémon with fusions in B/W and Mega evolutions. My point was there are plenty of examples of a Pokémon borrowing or getting inspiration from others but the super fans never acknowledge this. Just act like Pokémon with it’s crazy profits was the innovator, meanwhile those of us in the monster collector genre acknowledge it’s just the most well known game. Far from the best, a sad truth becoming more apparent each generation as they lose more innovation and risk/ effort and just settle for average experiences.

3:00 someone finally said it out loud! thank you! As a diehard Pokemon Fan, you have no idea how validating it feels to hear a content creator openly talk about the toxicity from the fan base when it comes to other games within the same genre all while ignoring the increasingly large problems within our own game. Fans will openly bash Digimon World Next Order while it plays better than Scarlet and Violet. and Don't get me started on the mess with Temtem when it first came out. I remember in the official discord server, the community manager had to start banning a massive wave of "pokemon fans" who were raiding the discord just to cause trouble for the game during Early Access. Just because Pokemon is popular doesn't mean it's flawless and without criticism. No game is. But to criticize something without looking at your own game first is hypocrisy and it runs rampant in the pokemon fandom and it breaks my heart that it does.

It's crazy that people believe that DQM is a Pokemon Clone when its systems are *NOWHERE* near as simple as Pokemon. While Pokemons first game released in 1996 and the first DQM in 1998, the fact that the sheer amount of complexity to the game and its *INCREASED* complexity as the years go on. Its systems outpace Pokemons in almost every regard. DQM Cobi's Journey had *MORE COMPLEXITY* than Ruby and Sapphire and even had mechanics that Emerald ended up taking (which was having to watch your Pokemon attack without orders in one of the battle towers, which is what DQM with its colliseum battles) and yet Pkmn RSE came out 1 year later than Cobis Journey. Also, lets not forget that Pokemon *continues* to *REMOVE Complexity* from its games when it adds new mechancis (Mega Evolution, Gigantamax, etc) and then strips them away in future games. Meanwhile the DQM series almost always keeps the mechanics its had in previous games and then adds more in future games, further adding to the complexity of future games (such as adding Sizes that alter both the monsters talents and stats as well as the party size). Pokemons complexity can be simplified into the following: Egg Moves, Abilities, EV/IV, Items, Evolution, Level, Types, Statuses, and gimmick of the current game (that will be removed later). It is only *NOW* with the latest pokemon game that they added an increased complexity with changing your pokemons type through Terrastalizaton. Meanwhile DQM has: Fusing (that causes loss of the 2 used), Stats, Innate Traits (Species Talents), Party Size, Monster Size, Skills, Skill Fusions, Inheritable traits, Trait Fusion, Accessories, Party Inclination Setup, Skill Frequency Setup, Types (immunities/weaknesses), Species (in relation to anti-Species skills), Lineage Special Fusions, Statuses, etc There is probably more that I am missing from the DQM series but they are in almost no way comparable in terms of complexity. They only share very few in similarities mechanically. There is a reason why I have DQM and Digimon ranked higher than Pokemon in terms of my favorite Monster Taming series and that is the execution and the mechanics of the games as a Monster Taming game.
@StormChaserJuan

Yet Pokémon is still played by a greater majority because it’s for a younger and more casual audience. DQMs complexity may be great sure, but i believe it appeals to a smaller audience compared to Pokémon.
@MaleficArken
@MaleficArken 4 ай бұрын
@@StormChaserJuan I believe partly that the reason why people mainly play Pokemon has nothing to do with because its more "casual". I believe it has to do with *markeing* . Japan is usually terrible with localizations, especially back then in the 1990's. The moment Pokemon was localized to western audience it spiraled out of control. However, if Digimon or DQM was localized with the *same* level of marketing as Pokemon *around a similar time* you'd see a much greater divide and less of a stranglehold that pokemon has on the genre. We've received pokemon games for decades with very little in terms of outside the box thinking. Meanwhile Digimon and DQM have pushed for innovations and changes in their games. But because they compete with Pokemon for young audiences and Pokemon has been a foundational staple that all monster games are compared to it? It just leaves less of a chance for Digimon or DQM to pull an audience.

@@MaleficArken hey man. It is what it is. Pokémon is owned by one of the largest video game manufacturers out there so it was set up to be the most influential. I still think too many people confuse the goal of the pokemon series. It’s not to add to the lineage of a series you play every title in. Instead, it’s to make a fresh new game for the new batch of 6-9 year olds. The game mechanics are stagnant because they work and are fresh to new players. Thirty year olds are not the target audience, unless they are playing the games with their kids.

You said you are tired of making this kind of videos, but to be honest, I think you should capitalize on them. If you feel uneasy or fear it might be perceived as an 'attack' on Pokemon fans, feel free to word it in a way that the videos will appear as educational or informative, not inflammatory(not saying this video is one way or another). But Pokemon franchise is a stagnant creation, and people should keep reminding developers, both of Pokemon and of other titles, of that.

100% agree here, Nothing is going to change if people keep blindly giving pokemon money because it's pokemon. People need to learn they are getting scammed with pokemon now. It needs to be held in check and hopefully that will have a positive effect on the developers and pokemon can get onto a right track, I love it and think it has serious potential, but it's currently wasted on the developers and those that have blind faith in what is going on with it now. We need more people making comparisons and explaining the difference between what is actually good and what is actually bad. Of course because a lot of us do want pokemon to succeed it is fair to point out the rare things they do get right.

If you actually care about an IP, you will want it to have competition. Pokémon has gone downhill in recent years. Its become so incredibly lazy precisely because it doesn't need to compete. They could release a literal pile of glittery shit, slap a Charizard on it & it'd be the highest selling thing all year. There has been a massive boom in Monster Tamers because people are getting sick of GameFreak's laziness & greed & are looking for something to scratch that itch. Then they're finding just how many games out there do it better than Pokémon. Or go in a very different direction with the genre & really open their eyes to what can be done with it. I love Pokémon. Always have & always will. But as a fan of the series I desperately want them to need to start competing again. DQ Monsters, MegaTen, Persona, Monster Rancher, Digimon, Tamagotchi, Metabots. Even among the big names none of this is new, & to act like Pokémon is the be all end all of badass &or cute monster games is just outright braindead brand-zombie thinking. Put it another way. As a massive fan of the Monster Hunter series, you know what the best thing about the PS Vita was? It didn't have Monster Hunter. As a result of that obvious hole in the market we got Toukiden, Gods Eater, Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars & the list goes on. Sure none of these held a candle to Monster Hunter imo. But as a fan they weren't just "clones", they scratched an itch. If you are a fan of a genre, you want MORE of that genre. If you are just a brand-zombie, you're too brain-rotted to be worth listening to. .....erm....apologies for the wall of text lol. I'm very tired of this nonsense.

Dragon Warrior Monsters being a “Pokémon clone” was actually a selling point for me back in 2001, when I was looking for something else to scratch that monster tamer itch. At the time I hadn’t yet played DQV, nor did I realize that this game was a prequel to DQVI. But I was very familiar with the DW games on NES and remembered how very similar the gameplay was to Pokémon. It seemed like a natural fit to the genre and it still does. Definitely agree with many comments saying we need a new tag (#) along the lines of “sandbox” or “metroidvania” to replace the wildly inappropriate “clone” accusations.

Honestly after the travesty that was Pokemon Scarlet and Violet I really don't get why people use Pokemon as a standard for quality Monster taming games, because it's the furthest from that trait. Of course the obvious answer is they play nothing but Pokemon which is why the series continues to degrade in quality, they don't care about quality though as long as they get to catch and battle pokemon. Doesn't matter that Digimon has surpassed them in quality, or that Shin Megami is becoming more popular and people are realizing it's been a good series. Then you have the rise of Persona games lately, and Monster Hunter even took a crack at it and knocked it out of the park. We have so many monster taming games that are better than pokemon in quality but the Pokemon Die hards refuse to touch anything else. Further I've played many open world and survival games, anyone else that has can see how bad Scarlet and Violet are and how much work Gamefreak needs to put into actually improving their talents that they really should have by now, and if not hire people who can do it. As long as there are Pokemon Die hards this will be a reoccurring issue, but it should die down more with people like Ed spreading awareness.

Even if you are a die hard pokemon fan, you should still be happy they have competition in the genre. It is just going to make pokemon games better in the long run as they have to out do their rivals.

yeah good points. being a fan of something doesn't mean you need to make your whole identity around how much you love it. it can certainly be a large facet of yourself, but ultimately to me the greatest respect i can show to those who created something i enjoy is to realize that creation is not adopted to be "mine" since it is a "part" of me- it is still their creation and i'm on the outside looking in, if that makes sense

I think that at the end of the day, the only thing that matters about a game is whether or not you enjoy the time you spent playing it. I have played both Pokemon and DQM, and I enjoyed both. Neither games are perfect. Just play what you like and don't hate because someone likes a game you don't.

Pokemon does have a more complex battle system and better pvp but Dragon Quest Monsters has a better single player gameplay loop.

Nah Pokemon isn't that complex and is a very easy game. I've played all the Pokemon games and every new one is easier than the last. The battles in S/V are a joke. All the trainers around the maps are very low lvl. The gym battles are a joke and I can beat the game with just one over leveled Pokemon and spam the same one move to one shot everything. In fact you can do that in every Pokemon game. You can't do that in DQM. You have to plan out what monsters your synthesizing, what moves they have, what abilities they have. You have to carefully put in points into each skill. You can combine skills to get even better ones. You can't one shot the bosses with one monster. You have to plan out what roles your monsters have and you always have to adapt to what the enemies have. I have lost to bosses in the game and that doesn't happen in Pokemon. Pokemon is only complex if you haven't played it before but once you learn the basic stuff like how the type matches work it's piss easy

That is completely false. Pokemon VGC World Champion Wolfey has detailed how the Doubles format has more depth and game states than Singles due to having 2 monsters out at once. The same applies to having 3 or 4 monsters out at once in Dragon Quest Monsters. More game states and therefore more depth. Not to mention the super huge skill pools of Dragon Quest Monsters due to a higher level of customization as opposed to Pokemon where movepool limitations easily make or break certain Pokemon like Kyurem Black or Weavile. More skill customization builds per monster means more game states which means more depth. I have played and studied competitive Pokemon for over a decade and I will tell you Pokemon is laughably shallow compared to most other monster collectors both casually and competitively. Let us also not kid ourselves about PVP. The enforced 20 minute battle timer on cartridge has made more hardcore players default to unofficial simulation like Pokemon Showdown (a complete and utter bandaid solution) rather than playing on PVP online on cartridge due to how little time that is.

The only time pokemon is complex is when its pvp but when its the base game its as not at all. Thats why alot of people don't like the games lack of challenge (like myself) and move on to games like dqm dark prince.
