Honestly I think it's perfectly rated. It just sold poorly to being a Gamecube title that released towards the end of the console, and now it's expensive as fuck because of people that overhype it so much they drove the price up when hoarders and resellers began farming cheap copies for easy profit

It started in Colosseum and if I remember correctly both these games brought in a lot of backseaters so, you know. Sort of went from an interesting mechanic to a tedious one because the gods forbid playing a game your own way.

Well, don't forget the first game that introduces them, was very tedious. Especially on how to purify them, being mostly if not only battling. And how weird the level scaling was in Colosseum, it was a great pain to deal with. Also they really sucked in the first game, as they weren't much different compared to normal Pokemon but can't level up. Where this game gave them actual benefits for being a Shadow Pokemon, over normal Pokemon.

So there's a rumor that, originally, the main villain of this game was supposedly supposed to be Wes, the main character from the first game. He would reveal that he was just tricking everyone in the first game into believing that he was a good person. But the devs thought that was too dark for a pokemon game, so they changed it.
