I had no problem with Iris and Ash's battle in Journeys. The point was to show how much Iris had grown as not just a trainer but a Dragon master. She chose to help Ash's Dragonite instead of turning a blind eye in order to get the win which is not humiliating to her being Champion in the slightest. On the contrary, it does an even better job to show how far she's come. I definitely don't agree with Ash vs Iris being on this list but I do agree with everything else.

Thank you for the comment! I agree that the battle was perfection for Iris’s character growth, towards being a Dragon Master. It was so amazing in that way! But in my opinion, it was a disgrace for Iris’s Pokémon. Her Dragonite & Haxorus were done so dirty and made to look puny, that’s where my issue lies haha

Ash losing to Cameron is not just my most hated battle in the series, it's pretty much an embarrassment to me as a fan. So much so, I almost quit watching the series. Only when the XY&Z series came out, I came back. And the Sun and Moon series really kinda made me so emotional, cause I love both of the series so much. Ash losing to him was bad enough, but with 5 Pokémon when Ash had a full team? To this day, it makes me upset. I think we need a part 2 of theses worst battles and such.

XY series really saved Ash's credibility after the distasteful adventures he had in Unova. Bad decision on the writers part making Ash dumb after his progression as a trainer in BW. I could never forget that awful fight between Ash and Elesa. Thank goodness the staff made XY series another great one next to DP!

The thing with the Iris battle is that if you look back, each promotion battle for Ash was against a significant character in his life or career(Korrina,Iris,Raihan(he shares Ash's goal and literally stood in his way)). Maybe you could argue that someone else could have been that significant person or rival instead of Iris in that promotion match...

This list is perfect! - The Wattson episode was meant to show that Ash deserved to win the gym battle despite having Pikachu not getting boosted, so it accomplished the opposite! - Ash battling Bianca's father just further proved her father's point that Bianca still wasn't ready to stand up on her own, like why? - We need to start an Ash vs Iris slander propaganda 😂 - I still dunno what the point was to introduce Virgil haha - Ash vs Giovanni was tremendously robbed!

The writers could've given Torkoal a better defeat than it getting knocked out by a THUNDER WAVE attack! Manectric was using Charge beforehand and I don't understand why it wasn't using the signature move of Wattson's gym: Shock Wave! Ya know, a move that is actually a DAMAGE dealing attack!

In my opinion, there shouldn’t have been a Cameron to begin with. We already have Bianca and so many other rivals, so adding Cameron felt pointless. Cameron just stole all the other rivals’ screen time once he was introduced. Trip, the main rival got written off in a rushed 1v1. We never got to see his full team. It’s so aggravating how they treated Trip.

As probably the biggest Trip supporter in the world, I agree haha. Trip was done dirtier than any other character in the entire series, if you ask me. And while I do like Cameron, and I think he could’ve still existed, I just really don’t like that they wrote Cameron in a way that forced Trip out of the focus. There could’ve been room for both of them, but unfortunately it didn’t work out that way :(

honestly, i think ash should’ve battled cameron in the first round of the vertress conference. it should’ve been a 1v1 with scraggy facing riolu. then in the middle of the battle, have both pokémon evolve. this would’ve been PERFECT story wise because BW was supposed to be like Kanto, which also had one of Ash’s Pokémon evolving in the first round of the league. Riolu also evolving would’ve just been an added spin on that concept. Trip being the one to take out Bianca also makes hella sense, since she beat him in the past. It would be a perfect way to show Trip has grown a lot and it would hype up the eventual battle between him and Ash more. Ash vs Stephan remains mostly the same, except I think Leavanny should’ve got the win against Liepard, and Ash should’ve used Boldore instead of Krookadile. This is because Krookadile will be used in the 6v6 against Trip. Ash’s team against Trip would be Pikachu, Oshawott, Snivy, Pignite, Unfezant, and Krookadile. Trip’s team would be Serperior, Conkelldur, Unfezant (M), Jellicent (M), Chandelure, and Vanilluxe. Ash would win the battle and face Virgil in the semis, before ultimately losing.

Another reason Ash shouldn’t have battled Iris in the Great Class is the massive logistical headache her getting into the Master Class before Ash even being beaten by him caused. The Master Class reveal should have been when she should have been reintroduced.

You have to consider when it comes to Ash, we're only seeing very specific lopsided battles that actually don't make any sense. Ash typically only ever battles with opponents with a higher rank (some exceptions do apply) but what this implies is that the trainer in question had to battle someone with a lower rank. We never saw Ash truly ever battling someone with a lower rank where it would actually matter like Ultra Class. But look at Volkner, he was higher ranked than Ash, but his match was with a lower ranked trainer. It means Volkner should be getting matches where he is a lower and higher rank than the trainer he's facing. In other words, Iris must've easily surpassed Ash because she had more scheduled battles and climbed the ranks much faster than Ash, something Ash clearly did not have access to. Keeping in mind clearly when you win a battle you do raise in rank regardless if you are ranked higher or not (might not be a lot but should be just enough that for Iris likely benefitted from it). This series has never been fair with giving Ash battles, so it is logical that Iris surpassed Ash but only because she has the benefit of dealing with irrelevant battles, it's illogical and unfair that Ash never got to battle very much. I mean Ash vs Marnie was 1vs1 for crying out loud simply because they didn't want to focus on it all that much.

I think the problem with the Ash & Iris battle was that... It wasn't a two parter. Think about it. Quite a bit of that episode was Ash catching up with Iris and Goh meeting her for the first time. XD Then we had the three vs three battle ALSO happening all in the same episode. So of COURSE... It would be rushed. So I don't think it was the battle shouldn't have happened at that time (although you make a good case for it being in the _Ultra_ Class) but that... This one in particular needed more than one episode. But WAIT... you might say "But Ash vs Volkner was one episode" and yes, that's true but their reunion and conversation was VERY short. Like a couple of minutes..xD Then they got right into the battle.

See I think black and white were one of the better ones because they stopped the over saturation of team rocket made their appearance worth something. I really believe there is a better way to keep comedy in some episodes without the constant need for team rocket to blast off again, it's been over done, they take away from way to many important plot points.

If you watch BW as a stand-alone series and consider ash a newbie then it’s not bad, like a reboot of Kanto and Sinnoh (its when the dub really started getting way worse though so best to watch in original sub, but the gap in quality is not as bad as in XY so the dub is watchable) and the world feels more alive at times than the other travel series with constant recurring characters, BUT it has that Journeys tendency of having good ideas that sometimes get executed really badly and leave you scratching your head, and if you’ve watched XY and SM before then BW might frustrate you too, as the character development and especially the bonds between the characters and their Pokémon ‘family’ were better developed in general in those series. But I agree that BW might very well have the best roster of characters for a Pokémon travelling series.

As someone who has been watching the bw anime (i'm around episode 110+) I really recommend it. Yes the anime is definitely flawed, the Unova league was bad, and Ash was stupid, but it really isn't as bad as people portray it to be. The characters are really fun, the rivals we're good, the comedy was great (especially Cilan), and the visuals and animation are great aswell. Iris has good character arcs (despite people calling her annoying) and so far the Team Plasma arc is decent. It's flawed but if you watch it with an open mind its really enjoyable and has its best moments.

I agree with Bianca's dad and Cameron, but Cameron the most. Cameron was flat out STUPID!!!!!. Ash should've beaten that little idiot in the Unova league since he had only brought 5 pokemon with him. Cameron's SO not worthy of owning a lucario. Bianca should've stood up to her dad and battled him. not ash. it wasn't his fight. and Ash shouldn't have battled those two weak trainers after losing to Bea in their 1st battle. it made him and Riolu look weak.

He battles Giovanni in Johto when the special Mewtwo episodes took place. 5. That was Torkoal's first battle with Ash so feel the losing streak argument doesn't make sense at this point. Losing was fine but loss by Thunder Wave was an eye brow raiser. 4. I don't think much about the Nimbasa gym arc. Better for my sanity. 3. Ash vs Iris in Great class is fine imo since won't battle in masters 8. Though too many Dragon type trainers being Ash's opponent has been an interesting trend in Journeys. 2. What about Stephan beating Ash as was his true Unova rival? 1. Was not expecting this but makes sense. Giovanni in Indigo anime was a pushover as per Gary battle and while Indigo Ash wasn't at that level either but it could've worked out imo. Maybe Charizard finding a worthy opponent like Magmar to motivate it. Honorable mention: Tobias - created last minute to be the one to knock Ash out like his other league loss opponents but just came off as desperate

Giovanni was obviously not trying since he was always just going to send out Mewtwo, I doubt if Giovanni had taken Gary seriously (AKA not relying on the crutch that is Armored Mewtwo) Gary wouldn't have done as well. Giovanni was intentionally lulling Gary into a false sense of security the belief that he would get his badge only to viciously take that away with Mewtwo.

I actually can kinda agree Ash should not have fought Iris in Great Class…but for a completely different reason. I actually really enjoyed their battle and thought Haxorus put on a particularly good display. The problem though is where things now stand. Iris is in the Master’s Eight! But because of that prior battle, she’s now in a catch 22. If Ash fights her and beats her again, it’ll just feel like a pointless retread as he’s beaten her before and literally every other opponent is someone who he’s never beaten before. On the flip side, the could dodge this problem and not have Ash fight her, but to a savvy viewer that basically confirms she’ll be fodder to hype up someone else. So either way Iris is probably not gonna go out in the most graceful fashion which is unfortunate.

I'd hoped Ash face Virgil too but that was robbed from him after his embarrassing defeat by someone who mistakes a TV remote for a pokedex! 😡 BW series has the most awful writing and nearly ruined Ash in a longrun despite his progression as a trainer after his previous journeys. Totally agree with all of them except Giovanni (but I’m saying that in retrospect)… The original series Ash was not a great trainer or an awe-I spring out-of-the-box thinker that motivated others like say the XY ash, he was a regular well-meaning kid with great Pokémon that was improving as a trainer and the premise was that he was one of many young trainers participating in the gym challenge and indigo league, Gary was more the prodigy at that point and he got wiped by Giovanni (and let’s not forget he had mewtwo under his command) He should not have been the one to beat a dangerous criminal mastermind only to lose in the indigo lead by some random trainer cause we’d complain about it now :p (but again, that’s retrospective thinking)

Gary actually wiped the floor with Giovanni until Mewtwo was sicked on him Maybe Giovanni was more about business than battling and was really rusty Still this was the gym battle after Ash vs Blaine which is remembered as the best Kanto gym battle in the anime so a better showing wouldn't have been unexpected especially if Charizard found a Pokémon of Giovanni's worthy like Magmar

I agree. Cameron shouldn't have been allowed to battle at all, as he was late for registration. He didn't actually have 6 Pokémon, so he should have been disqualified on the spot. And he threw 2 of his 5 Pokémon away, so it was really a 6vs which Ash still lost. But I think Ash should have lost to trip in their last battle. He doesn't need to always beat his main rival in the league to wrap it up, especially since he has shown to be this weak, he had no right to beat Trip, he should have lost to him in the preliminaries, but plot armor pulled him though. And I agree with your final pick, it was such a bad battle that Pidgeoto was the only Pokémon of his that did anything. Don't get me wrong, I love Pidgeoto, but it hasn't done any real battling since Misty.

I could go either way on Cameron. I mean, there isn't any rule saying you have to battle with 6 Pokemon, and if he didn't have a 6 Pokemon, he would have lost anyway. The only thing I will disagree with is Ash losing to Trip. Ash and Trip have no chemistry with one another to even make it seem like their rivals. Trip is just a Paul knockoff.

I am okay with Ash battling Iris when he did, but it would have been nice over two episodes, with a Team Rocket incident to bring out more of Iris's Pokemon to do battle, and Goh being gifted with an Axew or a Deino. Otherwise, the rest of these episodes were disappointing for the reasons stated.

Yeah I agree with Ash vs Iris since Iris was introduced to be a part of the Master 8. If that was the case to put her in the group then the writers should have kept her hidden and surprised Ash until he had made it in the Master 8 and not classes before.

Dragon Champion Iris losing vs one of Ashs weirdest and maybe even worst dragon Pokémon just feels so awful to Iris. It felt so weird for Ash to battle trip in the first round and not later on for a 6v6. Trip has beaten ash every battle before (if not every, most of them). And then Trips insane ace Pokémon lost in a way that didn’t make much sense.

Well Ash could have battled Cameron all he wants, but he definitely shouldn't have lost to him Lucario maybe within my top 3 favorite Pokemon but I still think Ash should have won the battle and lost to virgil. Might be best to look at it that Ash lost to Lucario instead of Cameron, and doesn't help they had a random Lost Axew filler episode during the league either. And yeah definitely agree when I first saw that Ash should have not been the one battling Bianca's father and should have Bianca instead. Imagine if Ash's career ended like that and Ash had to go back to Pallet town, but guess on the positive side we would have been spared that Ash vs Cameron battle.

This is a pretty neat list, but I don't agree with numbers 2 and 1. Here's my problem. First, Trip is a Paul knockoff that barely comes close to being labeled a rival. There's no need for these Ash and Trip to have a 6 on 6 because it's not that exciting. I'll take any of the B/W characters over Trip. As for Team Rockit, while it would have been incredible for Ash to battle Giovanni at last, it would have been a bit odd for him to beat or damage Mewtwo. Let's face it, they put him in there for the movie. Not saying this one is wrong, but it was the right choice to make.

But if Ash battled Giovanni at the Viridian gym it wouldn't have been a fair battle because Giovanni would have used Mewtwo. But you're right the team rocket battle was too easy. It might have been more of a challenge if someone like Cassidy and Butch were battling him.

Many of the "serious" battles are somewhat dissapointing, tbh i wanted ash to win the unova league since Cameron wasnt a person that would be a good rival, especially him being a clumsy person, Face it, we all wanted Trip to battle Ash for the final battle, They did Trip too early, Trip may not be the new Paul but bro, Why did the writers do him like that, such a missed rival battle. Dont get me wrong The Battle between ash and trip in the league was really good on my opinion, but it was such a missed opportunity for the League Finale.

When ash battles someone they'll never give up so they will become stronger or sometimes more stronger because these galar battles ash was just lucky example grimsnarl vs gengar ghost types aren't really effective against dark so he was jut lucky that marnie gigantamaxed and then grimsnarl turned normal and then he gigantamaxed his gengar so the power will be double and another example first battle between ash and bia ,bia won so ash had some motivation and his lucario vs a gigantmax machamp machamp would have won with one or two hits but he's just "lucky"

If I were to pick some battles he shouldn't have fought, I'd say they should have skipped the whole Ash vs Bea series or at least kept it to one battle if they must advertise something from Galar. They should also have skipped the greenhead original character they made. From a series structuring perspective, Ash should have been way past the point he would have trouble with those people. If Ash does repeats, make him do them with Iris. Or at least Korrina, who is at least established and likable. The correct treatment for Bea is for her to badmouth Korrina and get wiped off the screen faster than Korrina lost. I think the main blame for three of your picks (Ash v Iris, Ash v Cameron & Ash v Bianca's father) has the same basic reason - Pokemon Company's reaction to the fans' reaction to Dawn. Around the period from Masters' Quest to Diamond and Pearl (the season, not the series) can be considered a golden age for Pokemon heroines because the scriptwriters were increasingly unafraid to let the heroine upstage Ash when the narrative warrants, plateauing around Battle Dimensions. Unfortunately, they pushed Dawn (a beginner) too fast and too early, which apparently caused a certain backlash within the Japanese community. You can see from the movies how they reacted to it, eventually the anime followed the film by rolling Dawn back - the same person who was having a good one with Conway now gets defeated by a Female Roadside Trainer Kid. Instead of concluding it is because of an overly aggressive toss, they concluded it's because of the latent sexism in the Japanese audience. It doesn't quite solidify into a law until after Iris beat Ash in their first Battle Don but the anime grew extremely reluctant to let any girl upstage the protagonist. So Bianca has to have Ash save her butt. When Trip clearly isn't working out w/ the audience, they created Cameron to replace him instead of moving Bianca up. And they didn't dare let Iris beat Ash again. These may not be great solutions, but at least they don't provoke latent sexism. Hopefully, Goh has at least taught the the problem is not the gender, it's their toss!

What should've happened was Cameron be Ash's first opponent in the preliminaries Pikachu vs riolu one on one no evolution Pikachu wins Ash goes on to face stephan wins that, faces Trip in a full battle is victorious then faces the Eevee trainer and loses btw I don't like iris so I'm glad she got demolished when she returned

Your No 5. Makes sense. Battle with Bianca's dad had no value for Bianca's character. Iris vs Ash for 3 well rushed and pacing should have been saved. 2. Cameron... Cameron had 5 pokemon and should have been disqualified. 1. Right The Earth Badge was Giovanni's fight not Team Rocket was a tease.

It's uglyvish that took a win like nothing. Also Giovanni would have kinda been too op for ash at that point especially if Mewtwo was out there.
