Yeah the negative opinions cut deep on this video. I understand some of them (the moveset issue renders so many Pokémon useless or situational in various circumstances and that gets me every time), even as I don’t agree with others. I like the increased punch of the negative opinions in terms of structure and comedy. I just wasn’t expecting that Conquest was the game they would be used for, though to each his own

I have a bit of a story regarding this game. One time in high school history class, we were assigned a project to draw up a feudal country, divide it into districts and assign lords, and I decided to use Ransei as my template. Yes, I basically traced the region and didn’t change any names, but honestly, my teacher was none the wiser and gave me a good grade on it. And they say Pokémon can’t be educational.

The human designs in Conquest are probably some of, if not the most stylized/cool of any Pokemon human designs in general. Most of the iconic human designs just come from their position in the game, like Champions, while in Conquest the designs make the characters feel like people and not just "Ok you use fire here's an orange t-shirt."

Conquest was the best non-main Pokemon game. Really, any game where Eevee is a focal point is godlike. The Pokemon+Nobunaga's Ambition mashup works way better than it has any right to, and I wish there was more. The main character (male) looks like me, and I am "the Eevee guy", so its perfect for me too!

I feel like Super Mystery Dungeon would be more fitting. Half the people I hear say it's worse than Gates To Infinity, while the other half says it's just barely below Explorers of Sky. My personal ranking would be 1. Super 2. Rescue Team DX 3. Explorers of Sky 4. Gates To Infinity 5. Red/Blue Rescue Team (has some issues like some Starters being gender locked, can't choose the Starter you want, not being healed before a boss fight, etc, which the remake on Switch and later entries fixed)

@@austingordon3709 Good point. Gates to Infinity can also fit, as despite it's flaws, I still see enjoyment in the game, even if the roster was lacking. Super Mystery Dungeon is my second favorite of the Mystery Dungeon games. Regardless of which game it is, I'm curious how Logan will handle it and what his opinion is, since we didn't get a clear opinion of his on the Mystery Dungeon games.

Glad to hear ya had fun with this one. I'll admit, I sure as hell can't disagree with a number of complaints you listed here, particularly the issues with unit management. Though, I will say, the story and character design have been two components of the game I've always enjoyed, but again, that's probably at least partially because of the nostalgia goggles. Nonetheless, Conquest still holds a number of fond memories for me, even if Mystery Dungeon and the Ranger trilogy overshadow it even in my own rankings. I would definitely love to see them take another stab at a game of this sort of formula, even better if it wound up having the war that took place 3000 years prior to the main series (as described in X & Y) as its setting. Probably wouldn't happen, on account of the fact that it'd probably wind up being the darkest game in the franchise by a considerable margin, plus the fact that they'd have to be willing give this formula another shot to begin with, but still, imagine the potential!

The biggest one, imo, being the single move. I can easily see the option to, like with Abilities, give Pokémon up to 3 Moves from a select pool, but only able to use one of them and need a special building to change it.

I feel like if they tried this again, and made some pretty simple changes here and there, almost all of this games problems would be fixed. Like, I really love both tactics games like Fire Emblem as well as Pokémon, and I can see that there's a a lot of potential to combine the two. I really want to see this game done right, and I figure there's at least some chance if they're still making Pokemon spinoff games like Pokken and Unite.

I played this for hours when I was 8 to 9. I hope eventually there will be a remastered version. You can change whatever move the Pokémon has based on type (since there could only be one move), more Pokémon available, easier ways of getting certain Pokémon and Warlords to evolve. Like, one attack, but you have more of an option on what to do. Gallade has Psycho Cut, but could instead have Brick Break. Something like that.

God, Pokémon Conquest got me into both Pokémon and Fire Emblem back in the day. The simple characters let my child brain understand what was happening, yet fail the battles on my own. Going back recently to play this game, I gotta say I still loved it, but I'm still as poor at management as ever.

Boy I do love this game. I can totally agree with most points, blessed or messed. However I didn't quite understand the part about kingdom warrior rearranging with the cups and empty kingdoms and stuff. The game's soundtrack for me is a MASSIVE HIT (the kingdom battles) and a couple misses (some ugly area tracks and the repeating overworld).

Huh... but that's not really the case, though. Moving troops between distant kingdoms works the exact same as with adjacent ones! The troops will use an airship to move further distances. And moving your troops is one of the things you can do as much as you like without spending your month.

Conquest is my personal favorite spinoff (easily took most of my playtime compared to the others), and while it's unfortunate that it wasn't exactly to your personal taste, I am still happy to see it featured in this series. Hopefully if Conquest gets a sequel, it'll fix the flaws this one has (maybe remastered artwork that meshes better, the ability to unlock additional moves for each pokemon, better variety in pokemon, more variety in kingdom missions, better layouts for kingdoms (looking at you, Illusio and Spectra), etc). Well this was an unexpected development. As for me, I wouldn’t mind Pokémon giving this style of game another shot. Just fix base/town management and give each Pokémon more combat options. (Either four moves like in the main games or, if they want to keep it linear and simple, make it so Dual Type Pokémon have one move for each type. So Pokémon like Venesaur have a grass type attack and a poison type attack) making offense a little easier.

I like the tactical game idea, but honestly I skipped it because it sounded like a pokemon game I didn't get to collect Pokemon. I'd just make a game where you get all your Pokemon none of this warlord stuff. Just you collecting Pokemon and fighting in arenas vs other trainers in a tactical game.

I always wanted to like Conquest from a conceptual standpoint, but I found the gameplay loop got too easy and too boring. Once you win the first few fights in a campaign, the rest pretty much becomes a cakewalk considering all of your warriors get their Pokemon from previous campaigns back. You reach a point where pretty much no army the enemy can throw at you is even close to being able to oppose you.

You forgot to mention how some kingdoms can be tedious or a pain to Conquer, ESPECIALLY if you're trying to recruit Warlords (Hello Illusio, Terrera, and Valora). Not to mention Forretress is GOD AWFUL in this game (hope you like a Mon that will often only deal ONE measly point of damage), and it's the perfect link of one main warlords (literally, you'd be better getting Yoshimoto a Scizor).

Why would you even use Yoshimoto? If memory serves, he’s like the worst leader in the game. Sure, his warrior skills can heal, but there are warlords with better healing skills, like Oichi.

It's based on severity. +3 means he really liked or really disliked that particular aspect. +2 is less severe, and +1 is more minor points.

I remember loving this game as a kid but playing it now... I kinda hate it? It's at best not for me. Yet you didn't bring up the thing that angered me the most: the map design! Its highs are pretty decent, stuff like the Electric kingdom map is really well thought out and makes clever use of the attacking system. The lows, on the other hand, are some of the worst maps I've seen in SRPGs. Gimmicks as far as the eye can see, many of them needlessly frustrating and inhibitive, and almost all of them acting as little more than huge time wasters. And the randomness. I sure do love planning attacks ahead of time when you could suddenly lose access to an entire portion of the map because the portals changed color or the platforms moved away or the gears were turned? Or how about landing on tactical chance time and being put in time out for a a few turns, potentially ruining your plans? And after all those gimmick maps that force you to engage with the map more the actual combat, the remainder often just have you meeting in an open field, trading blows 1 for 1, and completely ignoring all those interesting attacking mechanics. Missed potential central.
