Right now you would need to have 3 subscriptions for the full pokemon experience. A yearly subscription to play the game online, 20 bucks i think. Pokemon Bank, 5 bucks each year. And finally Pokemon Home, the successor to Pokemon Bank, coming out in 2020. To get your Bank pokemon there, you have to subacribe to Home first. That makes probably another 5 bucks.

Christian Edwards they only have a studio of what 75 people they're understaffed and need to expand or outsource help. Neather of which a Nintendo studio should have trouble with and if they want to continue with their annual release model they need to. On top of stop mismanageing who they have they need better programmers as sun and moon's charicter files show, and the senior staff to stop dicking around with mediocre experiments while leaveing the rookies to carry the weight of making a Pokémon game on their own like they did with this game and Little town hero. If Game Freak and the Pokémon company aren't going to do it then Nintendo themesleves have to step in.

Milktank ™ We know Game Freak has notoriously been lying since this past E3. The question is what else have they been lying about? They also mentioned 1000 people have been working on SS. From the quality of what we have seen that has to be a lie too. You expect me to believe more people worked on Sword and Shield than Cyberpunk 2077? What we do know Game Freak is actually a pretty small dev company for a AAA dev company. The Pokémon Company has been making Game Freak work on multiple overlapping games for years. But for whatever reason GF refuses to expand. Even if Game Freak was competent a small dev team can only do so much work. I’m strongly on the side that accuses Game Freak for being incompetent devs and part of their incompetence is not expanding their company to compliment the workload. The coding in the game is apparently pretty screwed, like the file size is massive, there are reports of each Pokemon having 3 separate models for Gigantamax, there's probably extra copies of models shoved into each location they appear in like in Sun and Moon, etc. So what if we're dealing with the absolute nightmare scenario where the people running the dev team are just so absolutely inept that they can't even make more complex games because the skills needed to code things physically isn't even there anymore? I mean, the game would have the same flaws either way, but this might be so much worse than we think it is if they're not ACTUALLY lying.

Most of those moves don't really matter though. A huge chunk of it were Z Moves from the 3DS games (which they already said weren't coming back) and the Pikachu\Eevee special moves from Let's Go. The rest are various old moves, most of which aren't great, the biggest lost being Return\Frustration.

Remember this is the game series that when it first came to the West, Iwata almost worked himself to death to get the localization done and to add a whole second region in silver and gold because he felt players deserved as much as possible. I'm not saying the the developers should do that. Iwata and Sakurai are both extraordinary that did more then they should have. However, Pokemon is now the biggest franchise to have ever existed. There are so many excuses that don't make sense. When Sun and Moon were announced for 3ds instead of Switch and we got Pokken ported people said it would just give Game Freak more time for a big title on the Switch. Then Let's Go came and it was super casual and people defended Game Freak saying that they don't have experience with HD and that the spin off title would give them more time to develop the next generation. No Sword and Shield are here and people are making the same excuses. Yes Game Freak is a smaller development team, however they are in charge of making games for the biggest franchise in history. If they can't make HD games, hire more developers, inexperience or lack of time? Partner with another studio like Nintendo did for Breath of the Wild with Monolith helping. There is no viable excuse except GameFreak wants to spend as little money possible to get the game out and then they have the audacity to add a new paid service to store your Pokemon that you can't send into the games and to still do 2 separate titles now with exclusive gyms so that there's more of a push to force you to buy both

Man... I miss Iwata. The legend joined the dev team for Pokemon on multiple occasions when the team was experiencing problems. He was the man who was able to fit TWO regions Kanto and Johto into one Gameboy cartridges for Pokemon Gold and Silver. He was hands-on and is a prime example of an amazing president of a game company.

The monetisation doesnt look good for shareholders. Basically getting all your money in one go every 6 years is generally considered risky because if the game flops you lose out big. If you have microtransactions and dlc your profits are spread out more so its considered safer. Companies generally consider the shareholders to be a higher priority than customers. Im glad to see companies getting away with this stuff less and less though, hopefully theres some real change in the industry soon.

I know people are going to build a strawman, so I'll just repeat it here. We are not shocked that the models are recycled. We are not mad because the models are recycled. That was expected and encouraged. We are mad, because Masuda said they weren't and that their focus on presentation in general is the reason for the Pokemon cut. However, we've had evidence to the contrary for months, and now we finally have the best possible evidence.

@@Sennzho Recycling only made sense, because they're so high quality. I read once that the polygon counts on some, probably many, of them compete with PS3 models. The move to HD has revealed some roughness, particularly on thin, curvy parts (Gyarados's whiskers for example), so those could be touched up, but for the most part they're fine.

@@Sennzho Note that none of what I say is an excuse of GameFreak. They are trying to do too much too quickly in order to maximize profits, and it is ultimately hurting the games they are producing. That said: recycling is the way of all programming. Period. It has to be because there is literally no point in remaking the exact same thing that you've already made completely from the ground up and often results in the introduction of new problems from people making mistakes. You take something that already exists, and you modify it only as much as you must in order to make it work for what you need it to do. What most people aren't even bothering to consider: when you change engines for a game, you almost always have to rebuild the models within the engine you are changing to. So how would you do this? Simple answer: take data from the previous models and use it to programmatically reconstruct the models in the new engine. They will look the same because you used existing data to accomplish this. People conveniently forget that the new games run on a different engine and on different hardware than the old games because they're too busy being outraged. Another thing people aren't bothering to take into account: the models might exist, but those are far from enough to make the pokemon those models represent work within the games. If they're ONLY models, then there is literally nothing to make them work as entities in the game, they're just a 3D representation of something. They don't have stats, don't have moves, don't have any of the event triggers or states of a programmed entity beyond having a wireframe. All this is evidence of is that GameFreak started making models for pokemon that were cut, no more and no less. It is not unusual for a game to include all kinds of data that is left over from earlier versions where features were being made with the intention of inclusion until a decision was made during development that halted implementation of those features. The real problem in all of this is not what was removed, but the underlying cause for all of the other excuses that were given: this game is being pushed out too quickly. The development cycle for GameFreak has been shortening for years, and it has hit a breaking point. The problem is not laziness. The problem is trying to rush forward and make things too quickly to make profit that much faster.

Naim Hussain thats not how 3D models work. Most models uses formats known as .fbx or .obj and other types. Most modelling softwares can use these formats and most engines should be able to use these model formats since these are standard formats. It be like saying we cant import jpeg or png images made from windows paint into other programs like photoshop, krita or gimp. If you claim their engines cant use standard industry model formats like an .obj then there is something very very broken with their engine.

Pokémon has evolved into something more massive than a video game franchise that no other video game franchise will ever mimic. For example delaying the mainline games would effect the release of the anime. Anime can’t afford to be delayed because of TV licensing deals. The Pokémon Company has basically managed part of the brand into a strict scheduling corner and have to stick with it.

The problem is that they cut the majority of the Pokemon, cut several features, in in general just rushed out a half assed project while claiming that reason for that was that they had to make all the Pokemon models & animations from scratch, which was a lie. If they had been honest or just not tried to make excuses at all this crap never would have blown up the way it did. 3.They didn't remove Mii Costumes from Smash Ultimate, the DLC Costumes weren't in the game to begin with. Something you would have found out if you bothered to search the internet for like 5 seconds. This information has been known since launch. If there ain't any Mii Costumes showing up in game is cause you already got them all.

When I say its not cool for them to re-use assets I mean pokemon. It makes sense to re-use scenery, objects or human player models but they need to update the pokemon models at the least. They make excuses for why soul silver is the only main pokemon game where you can have any pokemon come out and follow you up to 4th gen even though it was a remake of silver. That was going above and beyond especially with the digivice like pedometer you got so you could take your pokemon on the go. Digimon has let 1 to 3 mons follow you at any time in the main games for like 15 years, not that it doesnt have its own flaws. Pokemon has always been lazy. It evolved with the ds and went 3d but when it came to switch it didnt stand out because they didnt do anything with it. It didnt evolve with the console generation like last time. I looked into the smash bit and it turns out that I simply own all the mii outfits that appear in the vault shop and it must have happened for me around the same time as Joker and his gear dropped.

It really sucks, and they're doing a poor job justifying it. Also, even though I don't follow Pokemon I still know who bulbasaur is. That's why I unfortunately won't be buying anymore Pokemon games from Gamefreak unless they decide to make some improvements to the series like every other switch game has. Gamefreak hasn't made a lasting improvement to the game in a very long time. Mega Evolution was a step in the right direction, but that was removed in this game. Every time they introduce a new feature, they remove it in the next game. Pokemon never improves. It really sucks because they have been my favorite Nintendo franchise since Gold and Silver came out.

Exactly. But they had to cover up their mismanagement of the game somehow, and they did it by cutting the Dex, and then lying about the reasoning for doing that. But the problem is not just the dex cut, it's the fact that despite the dex cut the game still looks awful in some parts. Some parts are gorgeous, yes...but others, like the whole wild are, are horrible. It looks rushed together last minute, and that's just sad.

@@somenerdpng Erhm.. That's actually one of the excuses they did use. They said that one of the reasons they made the cut is to make the game more balanced. Yet... Overpowered pokemon like Ferrothorn and Toxapex are still in the game while tons of pokemon that were never even close to being op like Houndoom & Walrein got cut. They've lied about so many things it's freaking ridiculous.. Also... There are dozens of better ways to balance the game. You can restrict or ban certain troublesome pokemon, introduce a tier system and adjust stats, moves and abilities. What they did benefits no one, if anything it probably makes the games even less balanced with just _some_ of the pseudos and only 8 gen legendaries are in the game. Balancing was never the reason in any way, that much is obvious.

It was more the fact they lied for no reason and then I got upset when they cut Mega Evolutions which were fit into the lore and made mons more dynamic and strong in situations. Then they stuffed them into their gigamax system. It just leaves a bad taste in my mouth with everything all together being cut and the lies. I can see why removing mons can be good for valance so we don't have another X and Y where rarely any of the mons are used over older ones. Honestly I liked how they did pokemon transfer before X and Y. You had to beat the pokemon League before you could pull your old strong pokemon from other games. Idk Sword and Shield gives me a Fire Emblem Fates vibe. Could be amazing and wonderful, but trainwrecks and ends up to be average at best.

Some extra insight into SwSh and why it looks so crippled. Animal Crossing got delayed. Metroid Prime 4 got canned and restarted. Gamefreak made Little Town Hero, and that game absolutely 100% failed miserably. They split their workforce in half and it backfired. Nintendo can't delay Pokemon because they can't afford another delay. Keep in mind that Pokemon is the highest grossing franchise on the entire planet, so they have no excuse as to why they didn't just hire more people. No excuse at all.

Removed content over recent years Gen V: The release of Pokemon Black & White saw the loss of Pokemon Contests, and other alternatives to battling. After the improvements Gen 4 did to Contests just for them to just, disappear, never to be seen again until ORAS where they just felt tacked on. Secret Bases or other kinds of player housing were also cut. Gen 4 made player housing a staple, with the secret bases in the underground, or the custom Safari Zone in HGSS. Secret Bases only returned for ORAS then disappeared after that. Gen VI: Seasons, a major feature that was added in Gen V, had now been cut. Seasons made the world feel more alive and allowed for more Pokemon to spawn, and it felt like a natural evolution of the series, only to have it appear in one generation. The difficulty select from Gen V is also cut. The games now once again only has one specific difficulty. Pokemon Transfers were also no longer a free feature and were transferred into a $5 a year service, so once the service shuts down those Pokemon will no longer be transferable. The Game Corner was cut, despite being in the original Gen 3. HGSS managed to find a way to keep the Game Corner by making it a fun place for non-gambling minigames with Voltorb Flip. But in ORAS, they decided not to bother. The Game Corner in LGPE was just decoration. The Battle Frontier was also cut, what was also a staple of Gen 3 since it was the first gen to have a massive Postgame facility like that with more replayablity. Their excuse to why it didn't come back was because "it was too overwhelming for kids nowadays." Gen VII: Triple and Rotation battles were cut. These two new battle formats were major editions in Gen 5 and stayed in Gen 6, and for some were their favorite way to battle. The reasoning for their exclusion is unknown. Horde Battles were also cut, replaced with random wild Pokemons joining in. No more than 2 Pokemon will be out at once. The PSS was cut, which was the most effective way to trade, battle, and find friends. Chaining was cut with the absence of the PokeRadar. Berry growing is cut. Berries now just spawn randomly in mass in trees. Berry growing used to allow you to choose what berries you got and allowed you to grow said berries in mass. Now you just wait for a berry pile and pray the berries you want are in them. While Megas were still in, they were pretty much cut and replaced with Z-Moves with no new Megas. Now with Sword and Shield it appears Z-Moves have now suffered the same fate as now Dynamaxing is the gimmick of the generation. Gen VIII: Mega Evolutions AND Z-Moves are both gone. I think we shouldn’t shift all the blame onto GameFreak. I think the Pokemon Company had something to do with this as well. Mainline Pokemon games were stagnating after the transition to gen VI while profit continued to skyrocket. Pokemon Company( which owns the franchise) probably think that shifting from gen VII to VII will cost too much for their “low resource cost-high profit gain” little scheme, so they kept the size of GameFreak team.

I think it’s time (and has been for awhile) to take Pokémon away from gamefreak and give it to another developer. First of all gamefreak clearly isn’t capable of making current gen games now that they can’t get a pass for being on an inferior handheld. I think this entry shows why we never got a traditional console Pokémon on other systems. But most importantly Gamefreak doesn’t care enough and they showed that by pouring all their resources into little town hero to get it out on time instead of delaying it to give Pokémon the love it deserves. They also give a laughably tiny budget for these games. They've also not improved much over the years... Sun & Moon was full of very badly optimized file management for example. I’d say they’ve got their own unique issue, namely that since the first generation of games they’ve been creating “third” titles for most generations. @@wilmagregg3131 I agree but a big part of why I compare this to Bethesda is also because a lot of these problems have been building up from a massive period of time in which fans have been forgiving and accepting various bad habits of GameFreak, much like fans do with Bethesda. So this is also a criticism to fans that are now finally seeing the consequences. This isn't GameFreak's Fallout 76 however, despite the many similarities. This is more like Fallout 4. The beginning of the company's problems showing themselves and splitting the fanbase for the first time. If the fans don't show their frustration by refusing to buy, we soon WILL get a real alternative to Fallout 76. And I don't think the fans will act because I still see some idiots going out of their way to defend the game, even now, and their excuses or arguments are often times as lazy and poor as GameFreak's performance here. They might be the most forgiving fans I've ever seen in gaming next to Looter shooters, Bethesda fanatics and sports games fans.

Imagine if they took their time with this, waited a couple years, put in every Pokémon with greatly improved animations, making each model feel more alive than just standing there, included things like Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, re-did Pokémon Wild Area overworld idle and spawning mechanics, included overworld interaction between Pokémon to make the world more alive, and *didn’t rush the game* ...We would have that quintessential Pokémon game that we all dreamed of as kids. TBH Gamefeak has done all sorts of anti-consumer bs ever since the 90s. So I just posted this on the Quartering, but it applies here as well: OK, so, I don't wanna get full winded knee deep into a rant, so I'm going to try and make this as clear and concise as I possibly can. FREAKING CALLED IT/KNEW IT: I (and many others) have been saying this ever since the trailer came out in June of this year. The models are the same. You can't just make "exact copies" of a bunch of complex creatures. There's bound to be differences somewhere, if not in all the creatures, then some of them. But let's get into what the real problem is. As soon as I saw Hop sharing Hau's animation, I knew something was wrong. When Game Freak said that the Switch couldn't handle 800+ Pokemon, they said that they were cutting (corners) Pokemon in order to focus on more complex animations. It hurt me as a fan since Red and Blue, but hey, what can you do? Problem was with each new trailer, with each new reveal, all the animations were exactly the same. No graphical astonishment, no new animations for older Pokemon, and (to confirm my fears) no postgame. My issue is that GF lied. Full out lied. You're trying to tell me that a 3DS could handle every single one of the 800+ Pokemon along with special forms and all of their movesets, but a console that housed Breath of the FREAKING Wild can't handle it? That's when it hit me that I couldn't in full confidence buy these games. This is coming from a customer who has bought at least one iteration of the main series games since they even started coming out. If GF hadn't been so shady, if they hadn't been so focused on bottom dollar deals--I and many other fans would have gladly waited another year, because this obviously needs a year and some change, let's not kid ourselves. Just look at Animal Crossing for the Switch. It was supposed to be out this fall, but they announced at E3 that they didn't feel confident releasing it and that they needed more time to make it just right. Sure, it sucks to wait, but I'd rather have a delayed game that's eventually good than a rushed game that's forever bad and that's what kills me here. It was all about getting it out before Christmas. Doesn't matter if it isn't done, just ship it out. Guys, that's what SEGA used to do (See Sonice 06, Sonic BOOM). All this and I haven't even mentioned that the team for GF was split in order to work on Little Town Hero. It's obvious that Sword and Shield wasn't their main focus. But I have to be real here. GF has been cutting corners since 2013. It's just become so bad that people are finally reaching their breaking point. Sorry for the rant, I'm pretty passionate on the subject. If you want to buy the game, please, do so, I'm not saying you shouldn't buy it. I'm just saying why I'M not. GF doesn't listen to outcry online, so I figured I'd protest with my wallet instead.

What's funny is that Sega actually learned from their mistake and basically every Sonic game after Boom got delayed at some point to fix the quality (granted Forces wasn't very good but that was by newcomers that never made a Sonic game before).

Fully agree except for the "delayed game = good game" part. Remember, Duke Nukem Forever spent 14 years in development and was shit. Anthem was delayed several times over 6 years and came out in a broken state, Bloodstained was delayed for at least 2-3 years, and it came out broken. Indivisible was delayed THREE TIMES after it's 2015/16 "prototype" was released, and when it launched this October, it was heavily downgraded. Delayed games don't become good games either, in most cases, they turn out worse than rushed games. Good games are games that are well optimised and meet their deadlines efficiently. If they don't they're either rushed and/or casualties of development hell and feature creep.

As for they couldn't house every Pokemon: they housed every single Pokemon on a 3DS. The models for other Pokemon are in the game, but not playable. It's not a matter of loading in characters. Exactly. I have shown my friends all the issues with the games and they still don't care. They want it literally because it's Pokemon. Nothing progresses if fans just accept mediocrity. It's a true shame. Glad you are aware of this. For now I will replay all the old games and play the side games I never tried. Also Digimon is a great replacement as the current Digimon games are great and the developers have openly said they want to please fans.

Not to be a contrarian, but from what I've read from the leaks Sword and Shield make up for the lack of Pokedex with a TON of quality-of-life improvements. Fast travel and overworld traversal have been completely streamlined, you can now rapidly train your pokemon through the use of EXP Candy. Hell, now you can even change your Pokemon's nature through the use of special 'Mint' items - that's huge for the competitive scene.

Good reporting, but are some things to that you forgot to mention. one they also cut moves not just Pokémon exclusive moves to the Pokémon that were cut, but actual competitive viable moves and for anyone who had to pay $5 a year to use pokebank you pay five dollars a year in order to store your Pokémon in order to bring them in to the next game but Now that you’re going to have a ton of Pokémon that you’re paying real money to actually store that you may or may not be able to use in a future game. Edit: I almost forgot, Pokémon that you catch the wild are level locked so if you’re in an area with high-level Pokémon unless you have enough badges you can’t catch anything in that area. This means that if you’re trying to shiny hunt in the early game if the shiny Pokémon you find is even one level above your badge level you can’t catch it you have to run away from it. And as someone who has a lot of shiny Pokémon in the poke bank and who actively shiny hunts in the game this is particularly egregious considering all the other problems at this game has.

I've been playing Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth lately. There are something like 350 Digimon, all with highly detailed models as well as each having their own miniature pixel sprite for the "Dot" status effect. As for animations? Each one has a unique... ...Walk cycle (Though many just hover, they at least have a basic flying pose) ...Idle animation ...Attack animation ...Skill-casting animation ...Signature attack animation (These tend to be a couple seconds long and pretty intricate) ...Damage reaction animation ...Critical hit reaction / KO animation ...Victory pose animation ...And the longer animations are paired with dramatic, sweeping camera angles to give them an extra kick Every time I get a new Digimon, I immediately want to take it into battle to see it's animations because they're always unique and cool. Sometimes I'll use their signature attack just to see the animation, even if it's not the best action for the battle at hand. Now, don't get me wrong, the game is far from flawless. The environments are utterly lifeless, the story is boring, and the English translation is hilariously inept. But the character models and animations are top-notch, and for as lifeless as the environments are they're at least modeled competently. 350 is not much less than what Pokemon SwSh has, all I'm saying is that if Media Vision had the budget that GameFreak has, we would be looking at a very different game right now.

Half of the animation are reused in Digimon Story... all similar looking digimon use the same walk/run/attack/etc animations.... and they're also extremely bad.... they're clunky and robotic and don't look good what so ever also 350 Digimon is pretty much a joke since every single digimon has like 15 versions that are just the same digimon in a different color... If you want to bring an example GameFreak could learn from it's the guys making TemTem... but not digimon... cmon those games are really bad

I keep telling people that. If this game were on the 3DS, I'd be on board. But, since it's on a system that can run Witcher 3, I think I should have BOTW with all Pokémon, plus Dynamax, Gigantamax (or whatever it's called) *plus* Megas and Z Moves, *PLUS* the cute contest dance parties from gen 4, and the list goes on. I didn't buy a Switch to run a 3ds game just like I didn't build a PC at the beginning of 2019 to run Oregon Trail.
