Is AR (Augmented Reality) the future of technology? Will this create a virtual utopia, giving us the ability to translate languages in front of our eyes and make better choices based on instant information? Or will it be taken advantage of? With the government and companies manipulating the world around us.

I’m a professional augmented reality developer, and one thing we’ve talked about at my company as another way for AR to go very wrong is the issue of transforming people in the user’s environment without consent. It’s easy to make AR that automatically transforms every person the user sees, but even with innocent intentions, this can be potentially dangerous. For example, my coworkers and I recently talked about an AR app someone else made that changes the face of everyone you see so they’re always smiling. It was probably made with wholesome intentions, but imagine someone was talking to you or acting in a way that made you uncomfortable or feel unsafe, but all that person could see was that you were smiling, even though you were not? As developers, we have a responsibility to think about how what we make could impact others, but inevitably not every developer will think of things like this.

One important reason that Google Glass didn't work isn't just looks, but because people just don't like having a camera constantly in their face. Also, there's a limitation in 'clear glass' AR, in that you simply can't project light in a way that blocks existing light. So everything you see has to be superimposed and translucent. The alternative is to be always looking at the world through a screen. That probably would be a tough sell.

The biggest issue for me is not privacy or access to data - it's *who* gets to afford it. I can clearly imagine getting rejected during an interview because you can't afford AR, or even worse - coercing people living in poor or damaged areas into buying AR they can't afford to ignore the problems. What I'm trying to say is that AR is a tool, and currently we don't have a good record of giving these tools to the right people.

I don't think it's either. AR has always struck me as a fad that's only really interesting to tech bros and early adopters. Like 3D and VR it will struggle for relevance, as the technology remains expensive and useful or interesting only in niche scenarios and offputting and inconvenient the rest of the time.

I feel an other issue i have not seen talked about, is how it could shift peoples expectations. I am the type of person that is often trying to reduce the amount of stimulation i see, so would not want stuff constantly in my field of view and even with my phone i leave it on silent most of the time and just check every few hours if i get messages. But if AR becomes the norm i can see the expectation shifting to people expecting immediate responses to messages and generally people just not interacting with those that are physically around them in the way they used to.

Another privacy problem: Only because you choose to not use e.g. Facebook's AR, doesn't mean, they won't be able to track you. Yes, you may not choose to use it, but what's with the person you just passed by on the street? Given enough of them over your day and you are trackable by companies you never interacted with on your own choosing. The technology to track you indirectly and deanonymize data already exists (we are way too unique in our own way to make the data NOT deanonymizable).

~10 years ago, AR and VR were getting about the same amount of attention. I was just out of highschool, and I was and remained super excited for VR, and I now own a valve index (a few others along the way). I've always understood the use and value of VR. Then, and now, I still cannot fathom any real usecase for these that actually justifies the AR tech. All the examples they gave were.. superfluous.

I don't see getting to that point in my life time. Something not addressed as one of the challenges is that as people age, most start having difficulty changing focus from far to near and back. Any AR based on glasses with text would have to be able to be attached to bifocals for those who are far sighted; and even then they'll have some trouble focusing on both the building and the AR text at the same time.

Someone should really make an open source standard for what is acceptable for AR. Policy on them is going to be a huge issue soon, and we already have a lot of fully functional AR devices in popular use. A lot of people don't realize airpods are AR devices. Apple saw what happened with the glass and are introducing the AR devices slowly and in as unoffensive a manner as possible.

I think VR/AR's biggest issue is definitely the fact there's no unified and simple to use coding system

Please define how airpods are AR devices. As far as I'm aware, they are wireless earbuds, and nothing more.

@@elliotttheneko There's no unified and simple coding system for anything. That's not something unique to VR/AR.

I am concerned about about information overload, especially with things like ads and Meta feeds, as well as the privacy aspects for both the users and those nearby that haven't chosen to opt in

Congratulations Extra Credits on the removal of the dislike button. So next time yall go off on some fucked up stupid tangent video nobody can see how disliked the video is except you. This is prolly the best news yall have received since you lost your original creators who had all the actual knowledge and skill behind the channel. So how long before yall stop pretending and shoot the "game design philosophy" videos in the head and just become extra History? Since the original creators left yall have spiraled from like 500k+ views a video down to less than 100k on your game design videos for damn good reason. They're just not good anymore and those in the know are aware of exactly why.

AR is one of those inevitabilities that, despite its many cool possibilities, I absolutely know will be misused by everyone who can. There's some hope that here in the EU some of the worst applications will be mitigated by lawmakers, but...

AR has a lot of potential, but i can't see it working. Because is not only your privacy you are giving away, is everyone you look. And the tendency nowdays is people searching for more privacy products.

There's this minecraft mod called OpenPeripheral which adds AR mechanics to the game. It's pretty awesome. I especially like having a readout of the base stats at a glance.

Augmented Reality is always 5-10 years in the future. However, the advances in the last decade have been smaller than even the most pessimistic expectation. There are some physical limitations on how your eyes can focus on objects that are close to our face. In fact, our wide field of view is an illusion generated in your brain, because our focal point is terribly smaller.
