Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver were released in North America on the Nintendo DS in early 2010 to unanimous applause and insurmountable hype. But have these remakes of the beloved generation two classics aged as well as Pokemon Platinum? Does the PokeWalker peripheral actually make a difference? And are these games really as challenging and amazing as people say? Well let's find out in this standard review of two of the series' best offerings.

TO ANYONE WHO MIGHT WONDER WHY THIS REVIEW ISN'T "IN-DEPTH"! These remake reviews aren't, will never be, and never have been meant to be in-depth reviews. I can certainly understand it's a little short, but I can say with 100% certainty I definitely didn't put any less effort into this one. Reviewing the remakes is always tricky because I don't want to re-tread the same ground as the original reviews. This means I never really cover the story beat by beat, and mainly focus on changes and seeing if they fixed any issues I had with the originals. While also talking about any specific growing pains they created. In the case of these games, they basically fixed everything I had an issue with, and they added, but never went overboard with changes to keep the nostalgia intact I assume. When I finished recording the script I was pretty shocked it only clocked in at around 7 minutes, but when I went to add stuff it all sort of felt forced for the sake of making the video longer and ruined the flow of everything. At the end of the day I'd rather a quality video over a needlessly bloated one, even if I know some people value length above other aspects. And the reason FR/LG was a longer video, despite being a much shorter experience, was simply because I forced a collaboration into that review that a lot of folks didn't seem to like (just check out top comment). This allowed for two wildly different perspectives on the games, as well as more banter in the opening and closing segments, adding a boost to the runtime. Also the Sevii Islands was a pretty big addition, that even these glorious games have nothing comparable to. So in the end this is what I was left with and though it's short I'm pretty damn proud of it tbh. But I certainly can understand it maybe didn't live up to the hype and I can pretty much guarantee going forward this will be the shortest review video I make for the series, simply because the only other remake changes a lot more than this one, and the liberties it takes and all it's crazy additions are definitely worth a full on discussion. Other than ORAS, every future video in the main series will be getting the classic "in-depth" treatment, including Black/White 2 and eventually even Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon as long as the story is different from SuMo. Either way thank you for taking the time to watch this video, I really hope you did enjoy it because as weird as it may sound I really did put around 50-60 hours into this baby, and I promise the Black/White review will be a proper "in-depth review" and will certainly be worth the wait!!!! I love these games to death but if I could say one problem I had with them was that the grinding was agony. No decent grinding spots in both Johto and Kanto. Only the gym leaders and elite four give good Exp. It's incredibly time consuming to raise a full team of six to challenge Red considering the highest leveled Pokémon you find in the wild are Pokémon in their low to mid fourties, which you can only encounter them after you get the sixteen gym badges available.

Rematch trainers who have your phone number, gym leaders, chanseys and use the exp share.

The Leader rematches work on a schedule, and the only Chansey in the game (iirc) is a low level, 5% encounter, outside of Celadon City. Doesn't really fix anything. The EXP curve in the Johto games, both 2nd and 4th gen, are fundamentally flawed if you're raising a full team of six Pokemon. The games are unfortunately balanced around a party of 3 or 4. It's less noticeable in Crystal where the final challenge (Red) can be managed with a level 55ish team, but in HGSS Red has a Light Ball Pikachu with a diverse movepool that could only ever be a glint in 2nd Gen Pikachu's eye. Not to mention a ton of move diversity in his other very high leveled team members (which I'm curious to see the IV spreads they're programmed with).

Gen 4 really encompassed my childhood. I started with Pokemon Diamond a month after it came out when I was 8, then Platinum (one of my fav games in the series), and finally Soul Silver which just blew me away with all of the awesome content! So many awesome memories like going outside with my friends to get steps on the pokewalker, the celebi event, using Ttar (my fave pokemon) for the first time, fighting red, catching Lugia. Just amazing additions to the pokemon franchise and why I say that Gen 4 was the best Generation and no other Generation can top it imo.

i think all regions in game on switch could be possible. But have no gyms fights outside main region. Just the league of each region you can challenge. Withotu gyms the lvl curve wouldnt become really awkard, gold and silver and hg/ss got their issues with lvl curve partially due 2region. and no gyms in other would avoid that.

A lot of people may disagree with me, but I think HG/SS have the BEST touch screen controls of any DS/3DS Pokemon game, and that includes Gen 7. Game Freak put a lot of smart design choices into the DS's lower screen that haven't been rivaled since. The only exceptions that come to mind are ORAS, but those games borrowed heavily from X and Y, and everything at the start of Gen 6 was in experimental stages due to the transition to 3DS.

I agree. I have...no nostalgia for Gen II because I largely skipped it back in the day. But once I got to the Battle Tower, I always opted for HG over Platinum due to the improved touch screen mechanics.

It's 2022 and I'm playing through Pokémon SoulSilver Version for the first time. It's a very good experience until now. I am only a couple of hours in but I am excited to see what's to come. Before this, the last Pokémon game I really played was Pokémon Diamond Version back in 2007...

HG was my first Pokemon game and after playing through games from gens 3-7, they are still my favorites. I was fortunate enough to experience the Celebi event scene with Silver and I agree that it's a real shame that most players will never get to see that dialogue. Here's hoping that it will be including in the post-game content for all players if they ever do another remake!

There are only two things that keep these games from being among my top 5 favorite games of all time. 1: The grinding was agonizing to the point where I almost wanted to blow my own brains out. The level scaling for Wild Pokémon was absolute ass. Pre-Elite four they barely reach the lower 40s, whereas the other games had low-to-mid 40s at the lowest. Then when you become Champion, the levels reset and are the levels they’d be if you started your journey in Pallet Town. On top of that there are no good grinding spots anywhere. It got so bad I had to trade my whole team over to my Pearl copy just so that I wouldn’t have to spend two weeks just getting my Heracross from level 45 to level 50. And on top of the the Wild Pokémon don’t even start to touch the late 40s until Mt Silver, which you don’t have access to until you’ve obtained all 16 badges. 16. That’s inexcusable. On top of that Gym Leaders are the only places outside of the League that yield decent exp. Except you can’t rematch any of them until the post-game. It’s just so infuriating how much grinding is necessary in these games to keep your team’s levels balanced and not have your ass handed to you by at least half of the game’s major battles once the starter and Ampharos that have been carrying you this whole time are taken out. 2: And like you said in the video, you can’t even get some of the best Johto Pokémon like Murrow and Houndour until you’re halfway through the post-game. And on top of that they’re severely underleveled, being around level 12 compared to your team that’s probably around the late 50s to early 60s at this point. And while we’re on the subject, you have no reason to use the Togepi egg since you can’t get a Shiny Stone to evolve it into a Togekiss until after you’ve beaten the League

About the shiny stone: you can get a shiny stone at the national park (yeah:it's a hidden item, but there is) and at the Pokéathlon Dome .

The main thing wrong with HGSS is how despite a vastly updated engine, they still didn't have the ability to make it so the trainer's levels depend on the other you play the game in. Like, if you do Chuck and Jasmine first, Pryce's gym is higher levelled. It's super, SUPER easy to implement. Just have each trainer with a conditional branch, the team you fight depends on your number of gym badges. A team for when you have 4 badges, have them 3 levels higher for when you have 5, and another 3 higher for when you have 6. Apply the same to the gym leaders and it means the 5th gym leader you fight will be at lv30, the 6th will be lv33-ish, and the 6th will be lv36-ish. Just that difference would've meant that Route 45's Pokemon were above lv30 as opposed to mid-20's, Clair would've been above the lv40 mark, and the elite four would be late 40's early 50's. The amount of stuff that's crammed in those cartridges, I know for a fact there was enough space to give at least Chuck, Jasmine and Pryce 3 separate variable teams. I'll never forgive Game Freak for not fixing GSC's outrageous level curve.

When these babies where announced i remember been a teen. I was so hyped for these babies because I started pokemon with fr/lg on release and then went to hoenn with ruby and sapphire and then shortly after emerald on releasing. So John pokemon where always these mythical pokemon that are so rare you can barely even find them anywhere. I never had a link cable or really a second Gameboy to trade to get my favorite pokemon steelix. Or kingdra. But there was always this aura around John pokemon that they were obtainable but the games and the story never where. I did play through colosseum and xd so i was able to get the starters and the birds and play with them but that only fed my intrigue for John even more. Heck I didn't even know in the originals you were able to visit Kanto. I thought that was a new addition for the remakes. Great memories

Do you hear yourself? lol ftr, I only played SS for the first time last year as I had only just picked up a 2DS XL to try and get into the Pokemon franchise. There will be others too. Not everybody plays a game the moment it comes out and then discards it. Hell, I first played Final Fantasy VII over two decades ago and I still occasionally play it to this day. This isn't meant to be a buyers influence review. I'm not sure how I feel about those anyway cause not everybody shares the same taste or opinions. Heartgold and Soulsilver are not only the best remake of Pokemon we have so far, but it's also one of the best Pokemon games I've ever played. It took all the things that the original Gen. 2 has & adds alot of content into it. These games really top it up an notch. Of course, these games may not be that perfect. I'll admit. In fact, no Pokemon games are. But they really expanded these games into an whole new level that really makes it up for it. Heartgold and Soulsilver are still amazing games. They may NOT be the best Pokemon games ever made. But there right up there easily. Definitely ONE of the best Pokemon games ever made & one of my absolute favorites. Definitely in my top 3 favorites. I love these games so much.

my favorite game in the pokemon series were gold and silver so when they made HG and SS I was super excited. They were awesome to play but i had to stop after i beat it because it didn't have wifi battles. They started doing random wifi battles the generation after this which was really disappointing to me. You can do it through friend codes but thats not as easy as a random wifi battle. Multiplayer is what adds replay value to these games and man do i wish this game had this one feature. I can only hope there is a remake of the remake on the switch with wifi battles but i highly doubt it.

Soul silver will always have a special place in my life as the first game I truly got into. I easily have 100 hours sunk into it but sadly I traded all my original DS stuff and finding Pokemon games at a decent price is almost impossible.

THIS was my childhood pokemon! THIS! I have been trying to track down a copy for about a year now and I may cave eventually and just emulate it but seriously. This. Was. A. Masterpiece. from inventing pokemon go (sorta) and creating the perfect games in total THESE games MUST be considered classics. The best pokemon has EVER. BEEN. I'm watching this on the 05/29/18 to find out about the game because you can visit the kanto region and until today i wasnt aware of this. I'm a gen 1 fan and couldn't get into any other games after gen 1, therefore the last pokemon game I played was Yellow. So I'm considering buying this. I really want to play these games! Unfortunately I was just a little to young at the time they were released. I have heard soooooo much positivity around these remakes, and they really do look amazing. But since there so popular and sought after, I'll probably never get to travel through johto. If only these games were released tow years after there original date, and I might have been able to play them.

One of my gripes with the games was not including the sevii islands. It only slightly disappointed me and playing the game for over 100 hours before deciding to finish it off by battling Red was so emotional, nostalgic, and incredible.

for me heart gold /soul silver where my first games (not counting the 10 hours i spent on my cousin's pokemon silver ) so this is pretty nostalgic and reminded me that all the new games need pokemons to follow u so badly :/

HeartGold and SoulSilver are my second favorite pokemon game(s), for sure. They improved a lot on the originals, and didn't fall into the hole that FireRed and LeafGreen did (which was changing/adding very, Very little). It brought new stuff to the table, and since post-game content and extra stuff to do is the end-all-be-all for me with Pokemon games..... 👌 Now I wanna replay one of them.

My one gripe with Gen 2 in general is that I'm constantly under leveled throughout the game if I'm using a full team. And this is true for the original and the remake. I was playing them side by side on my gameboy and DS a few months back. My only complaint about the remake is that they changed some of the surf and cave music 🤔 but that's literally it. I can always just turn on my gameboy when I want to hear that music.

I had Heart Gold, and boy. It was honestly just the best game I had ever played, I was only fairly little but I always played it even growing up with other Pokemon games, I always went back to Heart Gold. I played it the other day and I noticed how many hours I had played it for. 280 hours. 280! I couldn't believe it. The best game..

Pokémon HeartGold is still one of my top three favorite Pokémon games. I'm really want to play it again, also I am looking forward to the gen V review because as much shit the Pokémon designs get it is another one of my top three favorite Pokémon games, along with the most recent gen VII. Also I am pumped that we will be getting the OG gen 2 games on the eshop this year for 3ds.

I would love if on the switch they felt it was time to re make Gen 1! Its remake was on the GBA. The game is old and more simple would it really be that hard as a side project to remake it in 3d! For old fans like me that would be big! I also would love Gen 2. But it's remake was more recent. So I'd feel gen 1 should come first.

Can't wait to see Gen 5 and 7. Not too keen on Gen 6. And I feel like you'll have a lot to say about those games, especially Sun and Moon, which I personally believe is the best Pokemon experience yet.

I personally thought Sun and Moon were only fun on the first play through, there Isn't much to do in the Post Game and replaying the game is boring because of the constant unskippable cutscenes.

why would they re release Gold, silver and crystal version for the 3ds if they pretty much just made an GBColor emulator, instead of remaking and updating them to modern era capabilities. These are fantastic; 2° Gen pokemon with the DS capabilities or even 3ds (if they had tried at least...) would have been great.
