I started playing RGB when I was 9yo. I'm 34 and my love for Gen1 Pkmn games has not diminished over the pass of time. On the contrary, it has increased. I don't like custom/modded games, but yours looks interesting. It lit the flame that I have always kept alive for these games. Sure thing I'm gonna give it a try and thanks in advance for your work!

Sooo guys, I'm currently playing PureRed 2.6.1. and I'm about to cross the Rock Tunnel into Lavender Town. I'd like to recommend giving these patches a try; the improvements and added dynamics are worth the time invested :) and I look forward to complete R/G/B once more. Things like the Apex Chips enhance the leveling process on your Pokémon Team making it easier to train and develop them. Another thing I like is the improved variety of Pokémon found in the wild, which has made me want to spend time catching and raising them, just like I used to do when I first started my Pokémon journey. There are many things adding to the gameplay just in the right way. It truly makes them the definitive R/G/B experience :)

All game boy games are written in assembly and - outside of cartridge hardware constraints and whether you want to maintain compatibility with the OG game boy - the same capabilities code-wise.

Have you ever thought of adding in the island city to this hack? Apparently the SS Anne was originally supposed to take you to an island (west of Vermilion). There’s some beta map design of it floating around somewhere - could be cool to add it back in.

No, I have not thought about making an entirely new city because the existing cities have a ton of unused houses anyway, and I don't want to have even more of those. I do have a plan to add that area west of Vermilion though, but it isn't going to be a city because I don't want to make up an entire new city.

This romhack feels like such a gen 1 nerd's kinda treat. I'd wound up following the Kanto Expansion Pak development pretty closely, and while I'd enjoyed that, the goal of that project had prohibited a lot of really neat features that this romhack seems to be specifically designed around. And it looks so feature complete! So many of these things just peter out, to the point I just have to write them off with a heavy heart... Looks like its time for another gen 1 playthrough.

The Cinnabar Island Volcano yes, it makes so much sense. It's like the developers at some point realized that there was no "fire area", so they added all the fire types into the Pokemon Mansion. Also, do you know what would be wonderful? Make Oddish and Poliwag counterparts (instead of Oddish and Bellsprout), and make them available before Brock's gym, in that way you can have a grass or water type before Brock. Water types aren't available until later in the game, you can count Magikarp but it doesn't learn a water move, it just learn Hydro Pump later in the game as a Gyarados.

Putting grass or water pokemon prior to brock really changes the game's original feel. I can't do that. Instead pick up an Ekans with absorb or Venonat with absorb if you want to easily deal with brock and don't have squirtle or bulbasaur. Or, just use the X Specials you can pick up hidden in pewter city and spam Ember with charmander.

What I find most interesting is the "signature moves". It makes sense that certain Pokemon would be innately better at using certain moves. Gonna give this one a try tomorrow.

The point of signature moves is to give some uniqueness to certain less-appreciated pokemon while keeping certain moves balanced. Like FEAROW getting a stronger DRILL PECK. Differentiates it a bit from Pidgeot.

I LOVE your ROM HACK so much, it is the best ROM HACK for replaying the original without making it feel too far from the source. The option to change the sprites versions of Pokemon, the tweak in some of the moves, the animations... I couldn't believe it when I found it years ago. PureRGB´is the best. Hi. First of all a huge thank you for all the work you have put in. I downloaded this game and played it on my 3DS. The additions and changes you made to the game makes it such a joy to play these gen 1 games. You are able to play these games without any restrictions now. You are able to catch all the Pokemon, no restrictions in terms of evolutions (no trades required). This is how a Pokemon game should be. I have two questions: 1. I haven't read all the features and notes you have provided on github. I found out that some moves like GROWTH has been changed. The new effect is quite useful but I ignored that move for my Venusaur and haven't taught him GROWTH. Is there any NPC or some other option to teach him the moves that I have ignored? 2. Do you plan anything like this for the gen 2 games? Or is there anything like this available that you can recommend for the gen 2 games? I mean a PureGS version.

1. There isn't a move relearner in pureRGB. But a lot of the good moves are TMs. You could start a new game and be sure to try out each new move you get on the pokemon you are training. Or train up a new pokemon of the same species. 2. Not right now. I want to finish PureRGB first and I still have a list of stuff to implement. It'll take a couple more versions. If you want gen 2 romhacks in a similar vein try Sour Crystal. Not as radical as the changes in polished crystal but still lots of cool stuff. If I did implement a romhack of GSC it wouldn't be as "pure" as this one, as I think gen 2 needs some additional pokemon introduced. Like evolutions for pokemon without them, or some beta pokemon added into the game. If I made one, it wouldn't be called "PureGSC" due to this.

I replay yellow every once in a while from time to time as it’s the version I had growing up and every time I come back around to playing it again I see new different modded gen 1 versions but I’m never interested and opt to replay the original… this however!! Pokemon Tower Basement is just a transposed lavender town song. As for the secret lab theme, maybe I'll post it on this channel at some point. Oh wow I am highly interested in playing these games! Seems like such a cool refresh of the originals, I'm all up for it! I do have a couple of questions tho. Is it compatible with the original games? Mainly for trading as I assume battling would cause desyncs with the changes. And is it compatible with the Stadium games? You can transfer a save file from the original game to pureRGB. You can't battle between the original game and pureRGB because they don't share the exact same battle code so it wouldn't work. It's literally impossible to change anything about the battle system and maintain that. Trading probably works but obviously there are variants of pokemon that don't exist in the original game so those wouldn't function correctly in the trade center. It's probably mostly compatible with the stadium games. Again there are variants that don't exist in the original game. Also the PC / Item data has been moved around to expand that so they won't work exactly in stadium.

Recent Update: I've just been crowned Kanto Champion and already captured Mewtwo. I'm in the process of completing the side quests and capturing all 151 Pokémon. So far, it's been a very enjoyable experience and worth every minute spent on this upgrade to the original Pokémon Red. The level of challenges is increased intelligently and very dynamically, so you must use more than just brute force if you want to beat all your rivals. And to level up your team, there are many interesting ways to do it (Which I won't talk about so as not to ruin the surprise for anyone). Many thanks

i noticed onix had a "crystal/ground" typing!

Onix can be powered up a little after you reach lavender town if you do a small side quest. It will take less damage from water and ice type attacks and have better attack/HP base stats after. The "Crystal" type is not really a new type, just a slight variation of ROCK type for those above damage differences.

I read through the features and my only issue is that the NPC for reverting ‘mons new typings is located on route 23. Can there be an option added to toggle type changes through the menu? Or have that NPC added somewhere earlier in the game, at least?

They can be accessed extremely early, as soon as you get the boulderbadge you just have to spend some time heading back to route 23 from pewter city. No, I will not put it in the menu or earlier or in a more obvious place, because I don't want the average player to turn off the type changes. Turning them off throws off the game balance and makes things less fun to play. I only want the people who are obsessed with not having type changes for some reason to use the feature.

I don't want to add music from gen 2, as it's against the concept of this hack. Honestly I'm against adding any music from other games unless they are in post game or secret areas. In the future I will expand/add some beta unfinished music to certain areas.

Not having the split makes some attacks and pokemon a lot better. It's simply a different way of playing the game, not necessarily a worse way. In gen 1 the number of pokemon is small enough that not having this split is perfectly fine.

Ken sugimori's original art is mostly based on the sprites in red and green (original japanese versions) so what you are asking for already exists in that regard. In fact many of those sprites are used in PureRGB, and some were tweaked to look more like the original sugimori art.

@@JewMonGee They are in the game. The screen on the gameboy is 160x144 pixels. You can't fit incredibly detailed sugimori art onto this screen, especially if you want two pokemon on screen at once. There's only so much detail you can have. Also, I think the sprites fucking rule and are a lot more unique than other generations. They can be strange compared to "official designs", but this style has a charm of its own. I understand if you have different taste in that regard and it's ok.

@@JewMonGee I disagree. The sprites in yellow are based on inferior anime renders which have less detail and in general look more bland. If we're talking game boy sprites, I think gen 2's are the best overall, but red/blue has a totally unique style that I really like, and definitely like more than Yellow's. For detail, Pokemon TCG's card art sprites are probably the best overall, but they're also larger than the ones used in actual pokemon games.

This game will work on any gameboy/gameboy color/gameboy advance emulator. Assuming you patched the original game's rom correctly. I recommend using the mgba emulator. The game also works on real hardware if you have a flash cartridge.

I don't speak french so I can't do that. Someone else could though the code is open source. It takes quite a bit of effort to retranslate the game though.

Request cheats here: github.com/Vortyne/pureRGB/issues/new?assignees=&labels=cheat&projects=&template=cheat.yml&title=%5BCheat+Request%5D%3A+Summarize+the+cheat+you+want No it isn't pkhex compatible unless you want to break your game state, i'd have to change absolutely 0 about the save data for it to be compatible, so you can't have lots of new content and compatibility with save editors. Sorry, but it's easy to catch all the pokemon and to duplicate rare candies with the item dupe glitch in game anyway.

Many are fixed but the amusing/beneficial ones are not. Depends which ones you care about.
