I'm a collector, the only thing I dont really use in ETB's are Dices, Tokens and Energy pack. I use the rest of the contents.

I feel the ETB is only that tall/big because of the Players Guide, which is a 1/4" too long to be inserted into the current box length (btw I quite like to have at least one copy), but otherwise, that tall cardboard inside that increases the height is only there to make room for the booklet, you take that out, slide the lid back on and the ETB becomes shorter than a Booster box, and you could keep all the items inside an ETB and drastically reduce the footprint. They know that a large portion of the sealed collectors like the bigger look of a ETB on their shelf, I think. I'd be totally fine with them removing that wacky cardboard spacer from ETBs, to shorten them up, and slightly shrink and insert the players guide into the box. I'm a new collector with Surging Spark, but the card sleeves I've gotten, none of them have had a matte finish, they've all been clear/shiny like any other penny sleeve. I also quite like the set themed sleeves, and wish they'd provide enough for the full 90 cards you get in the 9 packs. haha

As you mentioned, that energy pack is incredibly wasteful. Yeah, energy is a core mechanic in the actual game, but there are ways to make them widely available for players while preventing thousands of them from just ending up in the trash. I'm personally a big fan of our Brazilian ETB's because they do NOT come with an energy pack and the latest ones come with 20 whole booster packs inside, that makes them WAY less wasteful as a product

If you just want the cards, don’t buy the ETB’s. They’re meant for players, not collectors. Buy booster boxes. Problem solved.

I think the problem though is Pokemon prints way too many ETB’s compared to booster boxes and booster bundles. Booster bundles on popular sets regularly sell out whereas ETB’s often sit on shelves and then get discounted to move. The problem is, if they print a small number of ETB’s then collectors suddenly want them because they are scarce and players can get them. This is why I think they should just eliminate the product, print more booster bundles and booster boxes for collectors and then sell a trainer toolkit with the other contents that players can buy for cheap and that are easy to get.

Not every set has booster boxes. I.e. special sets like 151 unless you choose the Japanese version

Yeah I get that. But there’s always going to be some of play and some who collect. And I think that’s ok and awesome that people have different interests in how they use their Pokemon cards.
