What does everyone think of Scarlet and Violet one year on?

Bought it 2 weeks ago after having not play Pokemon since Platinum got released. The game is ass as far as I'm concerned. Freedom to explore/open world means nothing if there is no dynamic level scaling or your actions don't affect the world. "Evil" team is a bunch of naughty kids. Art style is completely garbage and all the colours look washed and faded. Stupid "challenges" in the gyms or Team Star bases... I just want to fight other trainers, why am I doing all these dumb minigames? I'm not enjoying myself so far. But I'll keep playing since I spent $79 on this game...

So many people never got to experience Arven's questline, Team Star's / Penny's questline, or all the interesting bits about Area Zero because they either never bought this game or turned it off after 30 minutes. As someone who played red and blue upon release, I find it fascinating how far the series has come. I'll admit I stopped playing after gen 5 but that was because getting a new system just for a new entry into the series wasn't my main priority (personally the idea of a wholly original Dex was a brilliant idea cause otherwise Charizard go brrrr). I got back into the series with Gen 9 and love the stories. Yes some things could be changed like a more dynamic level scaling for the gyms or a better post game (the ace tournament though interesting gets comically easy with lv100 Pokemon).
@rivalryyyy Жыл бұрын
I get that alot - I started playing the series early Gen 2 and to see where it's currently at now compared to then is astronomical. Sounds strange but a break from the series also helps? Around X and Y I was in and out of the series but when I returned to see the development it had by that point was crazy.

Like so many people, I just expect better from Pokémon. Saying ‘it’s just a game for kids’ is so untrue-dude, I was 2 when the first game came out, and I still love it! When Scarlet and Violet came out, I was so disappointed with how ‘unfinished’ the game felt. They were on the right track, and Arceus, while still a bit unfinished, was such a breath of fresh air. But instead of prioritising quality, it feels like Pokémon rushed it out the door for the money. If Pokémon just had the guts to say, ‘Hey, we need a bit more time to finish this and make it epic,’ the result could have been fantastic. It’s only natural for people to get so attached to something they’re passionate about-and now their kids are too. Some fans have poured decades of love into this franchise, and all we ask is for Pokémon to take a bit more time to put the “quality” back into their games. With how much money Pokémon makes, it’s not unreasonable to expect polished, well-thought-out games. The potential is there-they just need to take the time to deliver on it.

I do have a video planned one day about Pokemon's ever changing fan base. It's been going my entire life, starting just before I was born so it's got fans from literally multiple generations of people. Pokemon's had a massive issue with too much content in such a short amount of time - Scarlet and Violet was definitely the peak of it and that's why it's been so ripped apart for performance. I'm happy for time to be taken for quality product - you can't rush greatness, if it takes an extra year then great. Legends Z:A is taking its time which is good. It’s not the worst game I’ve ever played, and I agree with your positive points, that being said the turn based system, the damage system, type matching system and level scaling are broken. Each of those things favors the NPC in a Tera Raid, and while I do want a challenge in those Raids, it’s incredibly frustrating when my LvL 100 Pokémon with great stats & almost 300 health, that I’ve put so many hours of gameplay into, faints from 1 or 2 hits from a elemental attack that it’s supposed to be strong against from a type disadvantaged opponent! This NEEDS fixing. You can add changes to make an opponent tougher without breaking the system your product is known for. Oh and the NPCs you get to “assist” you in Tera Raids, and Raids in general, NEED to be better. Much much better. They need to feel like they’re fellow Pokémon Trainers who know the basics of type match ups at the very least.

This fleshed out the game and being able to do them in any order was also great. I aslo had a lot of fun going around and completing my pokedex. I liked the idea of being able to see all the Pokemon roaming around but I don't understand why shinny Pokemon didn't have a glow or sparkle. This made it so hard to identify some of the shinny Pokemon when shiny hunting. I also really liked that you could battle any gym in any order but without level scaling, it was pretty much pointless. Level Scaling is exactly what this game needed and I felt like Game Freak was being super lazy by not including it. Also I was so hoping for a patch or multiple patches to fix all the bugs and glitches that this game had and it felt like Game freak took the money and ran instead of giving us propper updates and patches. Why are they spending this time working on DLC that should have been part of the game to begin with instead of using this time to fix the actual game! Ultimitly, I put 95-100 hours into this game and so this shows that I had a lot of fun with this game but with out propper patches and fixes, the want to come back to this game is not there for me.

I know Scarlet & Violet have had many bugs in them. But that wasn't what turned me away from buying or collecting them. It was the lack of including Staryu, Starmie, and battle facilities with new styles of battling, and force all monsters to be at the same level, no matter how high you level them up. I was told battle facilities like that were excluded due to a lack of popularity. But hey, it was still optional. And unfortunately without those features. Scarlet & Violet are not worth my time or money, at all. I haven't seen any features like that in these games yet.

@@rivalryyyy key word every point because from my experience, people can’t find anything to talk about SV aside from the optimization issues. Of course it’s a problem, but that’s all they can talk about? No talks about the improved writing? The even more accessibility to competitive battling? Terastalizing being balanced unlike Dynamaxing? Item pickups being just as speedy as Legends Arceus? You can’t give much constructive criticism if you can’t talk about anything other than the presentation. Heck, while this is my third favorite generation so far, here are some actual criticisms I have so there can be improvements aside from looking cleaner. TMs are back to one use items. While they attempt to mitigate this by making it so that any TM can be bought with enough materials, I didn’t miss this. The exp share is once again forced on at all times. While I always used it myself, it sucks for those that didn’t use it. It’s been a problem since Sword and Shield, so there is no excuse for it still being forced on. Fix it!!! For some reason, the ability to switch between shift and set is gone just like Legends Arceus, and it’s almost as dumb here. Once again, they come up with the most aggravating ways of getting Pokémon to evolve, with Bisharp into Kingambit being my worse personal offender since finding wild Bishard in packs was luck based. Palafin is very close since that one requires you to be in co op mode despite the fact that it can literally be caught in the wild!!! Wild Pokémon can run up to you while you are in a battle and can end up forcing you to do another battle immediately afterwards. Super obnoxious in packs. I appreciate the attention to detail in making Pokémon look like their actual size in the overworld, but this comes at a cost of small Pokémon being very hard to avoid in the wild since it’s much harder to see them now. I’ve lost track of the number of times I started a battle with something like a Fletchling because I couldn’t see it until I was in front of it.

There are so many factors thay dictate the overall quality of these games. Pokemon is a juggernaut media franchise and moves very quickly. From the games, to the anime, movies, toys, cards, clothing....... From a game development standpoint, its hard to make a big, ambitous game that is perfectly polished when you have a strict development cycle where the next generation needs to be released. The Pokemon Company is a business and the games are only a fraction of their sales. Most comes from licensing fees and merchandise. Its their current business model. It prints money. It will likely not change unless they either change their development timeframe, invest more money for current production to increase quality, or scale down game productio and lower the number of games they release every generation which would cut their overall sales. All of which would result in a signigicant loss in net profit. And they have no real incentive to change unless they see their sales plummeting which of course is not happening.
@rivalryyyy11 ай бұрын
Yeah I have discussed this in some of other videos previously - It's just so big now and as a Media Franchise so far away from anything even considered a competitor or anything just in general that there's no incentive to change it. Why break a business model that's working and bringing in success?
@spyroclone1527 ай бұрын
When it comes to objectively broken videogames, I see it in 2 categories. Poop spray painted gold (games that look good on the surface, but just overall stinks), and a gold nugget hidden in a pile of poop. Pokémon SV falls into the latter, but it's more of a mountain of fecal material rather than a simple pile. I see there's some genuine potential, effort, and innovations that further push Pokémon into the modern scene that we otherwise would never see on older hand held consoles. For years, I've dreamed of a truly own world pokémon experience with the ability to tackle the region in any order I wished. SV gave us a glimpse of that, along with other qol features people have always wanted such as being able to relearn moves anywhere, name pokémon anywhere, easy eggmove learning, auto battles, and pokémon following you returning. However, with every positive output SV does, it's always hit with a mechanical negative that bogs down the experience. It's a shame, because I thoroughly enjoyed the music, characters, writing, and especially the new pokémon gen 9 has to offer. Gen 9 has to have one of my overall favorite collection of new pokémon in a good while. These weirdos have been a genuine pleasure to use throughout this buggy mess, and genuinely kept me going through thick and thin. It felt like I was having a genuine adventure in a pokémon game for once in a long time. It's just a pity that they were introduced in this broken mess. Pretty much, SV improves upon almost all the charming aspects of the pokémon games, whilst downgrading on the technical aspects in turn, leaving a polarizing experience to say the least. I do not believe Pokémon SV to be the most irredeemable pieces of garbage like most folks will say online for the sake of drama farming. There are justifiable things to be excited about as a pokémon fan, as well as things to appreciate the game for outside the fanbase. Hence why I call it a piece of true gold in a poop mountain. To invalidate the enjoyment one can have out of this title solely based off the technical performance is a bit disingenuous. It's got the heart, just not the body. However, I will not defend the clear incompetence on display for the sheer asinine design decisions GameFreak has done throughout the production. It is a sheer embarrassment to both Nintendo, and pokémon fans that this game was green-lit to represent the franchise in its Unfinished state. I do not blame anybody who would harshly critisize this game for its terrible impression of technical incompetence. From an objectively technical standpoint, Pokémon SV are terrible videogames. GF are still far behind in terms of modern videogame quality standards, and truly needs to either seek help, or up their game because pokémon may not have a future if they can't deliver functioning games.

Anyways, the optimization is really the only major problem I have with this game. Oddly enough, I really didn’t have that many problems with it… pre Indigo Disk. What the hell is this stuttering nonsense in Blueberry Academy?!?!?!?! Otherwise, it’s miles better than Sword Shield. The Pokémon models in the overworld scale to how they actually look like (though it can be hard to see them sometimes for this reason), terastallizing is much more balanced than Dynamaxing (never forget the choice item exploit), the cast of characters is miles better here (I don’t care for anyone in SwSh as far as story characters goes. Chairman Rose is a contender for worst Pokemon villain ever) with Arven being a top 5 contender for the franchise as is Kieran, the music is miles better in addition to going the Kingdom Hearts route where every province has its own battle theme, the pacing of battles is much quicker, as is the game in general, you can now buy mints in shops to avoid grinding battle points of any kind, no need for dlc to swap terastallizing types unlike SwSh with Dynamaxing and gigantimaxing, and you now have items that can swap between NORMAL AND HIDDEN ABILITIES!!!!!! I could go on and on with how while Sword and Shield tried to implement quality of life updates to the formula, Scarlet and Violet absolutely murders gen 8 for effort. There are some other problems here and there like how TMs are now back to 1 use items (I didn’t miss this), but at least you can make more of any kind of TM now unlike older games where many TMs like giga drain and drain punch where 1 time only deals.

I did within about 2 minutes of the Indigo Disk have some serious optimization problems - it's a really strange one that I do struggle to understand. Interestingly enough I agree in regards to Chairman Rose - I do not think he was a proper stand out villian for the series - I much prefer the characters in Scarlet and Violet for sure.

@rivalryyyy7 ай бұрын
Dependant on the experience you are looking for - Let's Go is much more simplistic and obviously Generation 1 which is nostalgic to most. It's a nice addition to the series. Scarlet and Violet is open world for the 1st time and fun in its own right but has some issues including performance. Id judge it based on that in terms of deciding which one to get.

Yes 100% I recommend… if you like pokemon you are gonna love pal world reasons It’s like ark where you get to take your pals You are only able to carry 5 in your team The pals are not just stored in a box forgotten You can do many things with them like Put them to work lol butcher them build a base and it’s super addicting also they are going to release pvp online so you can raid bases and battle with your pals there’s tons of playability I have not stopped playing it and I wish pokemon did something similar .. my brother and I got an xbox series s each just for this game and ooof we haven’t stopped playing this amazing game. So yea I recommend it

This gane could of been amazing but the performance and visuals falling apart has ruined this game and what's screwed is people actually defend this garbage and it's sad, I bought this game with season pass and still haven't been able to finish it because I get a headache from how bad the performance is. Its sad that Arceus and sword are way better smh

Scarlet and Violet sucks. You cant rechallenge the pokemon league, the display is boring and looks horrible, when you transfer pokemon from pokemon home from other versions to Scarlet and Violet, their moves are completely replaced, no pokemon day care to breed, the map makes it difficult to travel around, Paldea, your character doesnt stay still when you dont press buttons, and alot of the mini games are boring af, you cant even rotate the camera when your traveling
@rivalryyyy10 ай бұрын
There's certainly some things within the game that need to be addressed to make it better overall. Like I have said a few times there's positives in this game, but there's some serious negatives too. I didn't actually know about the moves being completely replaced!
@gamesmoney102510 ай бұрын
Yep even if they can learn the same moves in Scarlet and Violet, you have to re teach them..... The games Negative seriously outweighs it's benefits. I hated the game so much that I told myself I would never pre order a pokemon game again. I'll wait until people play the games and see if it is worth buying. The few positives Ive experienced were the final battle with the professors, some interesting Pokemon like the evolved form of Primeape, and the music when you beat The Pokemon League (but you can only challenge them once) The Pokemon company should hire a lot more people that can handle specific purposes like having a department that can tell stories, a section for create interesting Pokemon, another section for designing the platform, music, etc. However the Pokemon company is apparently too cheap to hire new employees. What did you like most about these games?

My issue is the world is super bland and that is made worse by the pop in making it to where the little notable parts of the game can barely be seen I am a firm believer these are the worst pokemon games not necessarily awful but disappointing especially since I was expecting this to be what mario 64 was to mario or botw was to zelda that being said these are not awful and as the dlcs release I am making an effort to put more time into them as after release and my first playthrough I put them down and never touched them again
@rivalryyyy Жыл бұрын
I see what you mean in regards to the world for sure - what was your opinion on Sword and Shield? I felt like as they were the 1st new step on the Switch they would be the first big step up if you get me?
@JoshyBoy1124 Жыл бұрын
@@rivalryyyy i think sword and shields level design was awful mostly linear levels with barely any branching paths or note worthy battles or items but I felt the world aesthetically was great and despite how boring the traversal was I never felt it was bland while playing because there were cool landmarks to see and the transition from rural to urban England style areas was really nice and I think the wild area nailed what scarlet and violet was going for since while still somewhat bland it had enough places of note to make up a good atmosphere and also was bordering more full fledged cities with more character to them
@rivalryyyy Жыл бұрын
@@JoshyBoy1124 I'd agree with that - like you said the area's that transition from rural to urban England are some of my favourite parts - bit of a bias being from England maybe.

@@randompersonontheinternet8790 look you think what you want I don’t care but in my opinion breath of the wilds unique mechanics, puzzles, combat, and atmosphere make the world far more interesting and while yes hyrule field can be a bit bland botw hits it out the park with tons of areas such as death mountain, hebra mountain, akaala, faron, certain areas of lanayru, and certain areas in gerudo and even the bland areas have fun gameplay and puzzles in them once more I don’t really care but Imma argue since you said sv to is better than my favorite game of all time
@JoshyBoy1124 Жыл бұрын

My opinion has never changed: Huge steps in the right direction (along with Legends: Arceus) but horribly plagued by performance and bugs. I would take the freedom of this game over the terrible hallway segments of SwSh any day of the week.
@Wesgarbarwil142011 ай бұрын
I think it's important to limit the amount of older pokemon, at least until end game. Otherwise people will just keep using their favourites from previous gens. The performance issues for me were just too much and made the game less fun to play. One thing that is glaring is just how ugly it is. Like you mentioned a few times, the pokemon company are a multi BILLION dollar company so there is no excuse. Those who say they are held back by the limits of the switch, you only need to look at xenoblade or breath of the wild to see that just isn't true
