totally agree with your 'when i was a kid seeing these animations i was excited to see what things would look like in 20 years' comment. quite a letdown...this game looked amazing as a kid at the time, and still holds up very well. so much personality in all of the animations that's just missing today. nice highlight video!

The rental system was such a cool idea. Using the balance of better moves for unevolved/lower bst pokemon is a great way to encourage variety in teambuilding, and lets you check out pokemon that either are hard to obtain or easily overlooked. I sure hope they keep this fair and interesting challenge just as good in the sequel :)

Stadium was before my time, but this really made me remember Pokemon Battle Revolution, which I remember being extremely hyped for and then feeling super disappointed that there wasn't a story mode or anything. I also felt like the game would be obsolete as soon as the next gen games came out, little did I know that Battle Revolution would be the best the game's graphics have ever gotten.

Mewtwo is actually really easy to beat even with rentals. Electrode Thunder Wave + full team of Self-Destruct/Explosion denying the opponent their turn after self-KO'ing. Last mon chips away Mewtwo with a standard move. Fans had to make Stadium Kaizo to make the fight actually challenging 😂

Iirc the funny RNG of this game feels that way because the CPU sees the rolls for checks. If a CPU Thunderwaves in a position where they have been attacking, it's because they saw you would be Fully Paralyzed if they did. If a CPU randomly uses Thunderbolt when they've been using Surf that does more damage, it's because they saw the paralysis would stick. If a CPU starts using double team, you miss, it does some other things, then Double Teams again, it's because they saw that evasion boost would change the result of your hit. I know there's limits to this/set rates of "goofs" the AI does, I dunno the specifics of that. It's not EXACTLY unfair RNG, but it is actually leveraged unfairly, which makes it overall feel easier to have strings of very bad luck, than single blips of bad luck here and there.

A couple of the more niche/goofy animations were removed, like iirc Jynx Mega Kick, but otherwise, the same or better, with newer pokemon having occasionally absolutely incredible animations, like the GOAT fainting animation for Honchkrow, Palkia's brűtal animations for physical moves, ect. Also a small thing, but Battle Revolution also had different visual effects for the HP bar depleting based on the type of move. Fire, the bar burned away, Ground, the bar shattered and broke away in chunks, ect. A good rule of thumb. Archeops has probably the best animations of any modern pokemon model, in terms of capturing the vibes of the Pokemon. If dropped into Battle Revolution, Archeops would probably be a 3/10.

The fact that a Nintendo 64 game looks better in terms of graphics and battle animations compared to Scarlet/Violet (a Nintendo Switch title, btw) is just incredibly sad. Why is Nintendo allowing this garbage on their modern day console? Which is why, as much as I hate the mere concept of it because of how much it hurts game devs, I pirated the Switch Pokemon games (Sword/Shield and Scarlet/Violet, only one I legitimately bought was Legends Arceus because it's actually good) because I refuse to give Game Freak my money until they actually fix their games.
