For ground's immunity to electricity, it's because lightning and electricity gets absorbed by ground. That fact is why it's okay to work on an electrical line AS LONG AS the body doesn't provide a path to the ground (rubber gloves).

I love to be that guy. Ice is effective again'st ground because when water freezes it expands, thus breaking the ground up when water freezes in those cracks in the ground.
