One thing that's so interesting to highlight here is planning in advance vs. relying on luck. Nuzlockes try to minimize luck as much as possible to avoid losing altogether, while speedrunners tend to embrace luck for the purposes of completing the game as fast as possible. It's a high risk = high reward approach, but since Nuzlockers tend to think of the games beyond simply finishing as fast as possible, they tend to be more apt for contingencies and playing the odds when it favors them, ultimately saving time otherwise spent in the end. That's obviously only scratching the surface, but it was an interesting video! I wouldn't mind seeing more of these types of things for all the other games.
@gjbsarmeri395711 ай бұрын
That's actually kinda wrong considering in the video the nuzlockers are the ones that had an insane amount of luck during the whole run
@HadaHarabaz6 ай бұрын
@gjbsarmeri3957 If you fail one luck roll in speedrunning it's over, that approach to the game grants you nothing in a contest where Draft rules are a thing.
@idontknow-sh4bj3 ай бұрын
That's actually wrong, the speedrunner for pokemon legends arceus (you can watch it on gdq), one of the best speedrunners, explains that pro speedrunners are actually the ones who account for / plan for mistakes. Pro speedrunner's don't soly rely on luck. It's a misconception. If you truly want to play the game as quick as possible, you need to account for bad luck too. That's just how it is. I do agree with Jan tho that nuzlockers have more exercice on planning specific things out. Whereas speedrunners plan the whole picture. There is a lot of planning that happens in speedrun too: for example in the lets go race (also from gdq) they explain what they do, and they explain that they use specific pokemon that are planned for specific fights: for example using starmie for the late game. That's an example of something they planned in advance.
@vivil25332 ай бұрын
When going for the best times Speedrunners take the rng risk, and therefore have many contingency plans, and are very quick to adapt It should also be noted there's a difference between a world record attempt and a marathon or race setting. In a world record attempt you take the risk everytime and reset if you fail. In a race or marathon consistency is more important if the time loss from bad RNG is to severe. Races are a balancing act between risk and consistency. So while it is more consistent you have to adapt to your mistakes Nuzlockers prioritize consistency above all else a single unlucky crit can make a hard-core nuzlock impossible or at least much harder. So nuzlockers are looking for a 100% consistent way to clear every battle. So at the highest end of Nuzlocks every fight is planned out to the smallest detail. However nothing is always perfect so they too need to adapt from time to time. So really both skills require consistency and adaptation.

@thechoripankiller11 ай бұрын
To be fair, speedrunners played by nuzlocker's rules. Usually speedrunners use the most optimal strategy, which would involve using a single or very few Pokémon, without any level cap, and free access to the bag. It would be interesting to see this again, but with a more speedrunning oriented rule set
@riolufistofmight11 ай бұрын
Sure, but they did also have a huge number of potential advantages. Starting access to Mach bike, a draft for pokemon, the removal of a number of forced encounters (Aqua/Magma storyline) This fight, like Jan said, pretty clearly came down to overworld knowledge or boss knowledge and the Nuzlockers killed it.

As a speedrun enjoyer, I'm not too surprised the Nuzlockers outperformed on the battling front-speedrunners have every fight down to a science, but generally with only 1 or 2 specific Pokémon and a lot of X-items. They don't really have to get down into the weeds as much as Nuzlockers do, haha. Everyone did so well though! And GG to Flygon for that insanely clutch finish!

@freak_mj4842 Жыл бұрын
Yes wanted to write the same thing. Not beeing allowed to use items in battle and having the lvl cap really shows how much speedrunners rely on 1-2 (most of the time overleveled) pokemon and the use of items to get the insane times they do in the actual speedruns.
@petfriendamy11 ай бұрын
Honestly, I think the saving grace here is that speedrunners tend to have more rounded knowledge, i.e. anyone who speedruns professionally has probably dabbled in Nuzlockes and other challenge runs. (I know Pulse, at least, has done competitive battling.) If they'd picked people who **exclusively** do speedruns, there'd be no chance, because the skillset doesn't really require you to be good at battling--just at memorizing inputs.

This was a great watch, I feel like on one hand I was rooting for the underdogs in a race, being the nuzlockers, but at the same time, Speedrunners know how to make the most of an advantage, going as fast as they can with whatever they've got, however, there comes a point in a speedrun where you accept defeat, and reset, while a Nuzlock incentivises persistance, because it doesn't matter how quick you beat the game, but if you can, given what meager pokemon you're given, so while the speedrunners could make the most of a good situation, nuzlockers could make the most of a BAD situation, which ultimately changes the question of "who's really the underdogs". the format was nuzlockle. lose pokemon upon defeat. no items. no planning ahead, other than being lucky drafting pokemon you are allowed to use. when speedrunning is valued upon items and using the same pokemon, it falls flat on what can be deemed a fair and balanced tourney. the tourney wasnt about who was fastest, but rather - could a speedrunner win in the nuzlocklers turf. and they couldnt, which is all good. as long as the tourney is served as a nuzlockle favored tourney its all good. a speedrunning tourney would be fun to watch vs. 3 nuzlocklers. see who could beat it, the fastest. using items, using pokemons and keep using them even if fainted. i think limiting isnt speedrunner friendly. again would love to see a speedrunners vs nuzlockler tourney , using speedrun rules.

I think the thing to remember about the speed run vs nuzlocke path optimization, is both are usually training specifically to dodge wasted battles, for speed runners because time, for nuzlockers because less chances for rng to punish... now the nuzkocker is "less" refined in dodging battles but they are still practiced at it, so the huge edge you were giving them isn't as big an edge, nevermind how little it actually makes in difference.

I honestly expected the nuzlockers to just dominate, usually speedrunning has a set strategy that's the most optimal and if you get bad luck you just reset, nuzlockers are very used to taking a mediocre encounter and finding a weird way to make it fit, the speedrunners simply couldn't get through the battles fast enough to have there map speed matter
