What was the biggest live tell you’ve seen at the poker table?

cant say ive caught many real tells.. can only think of one, in several years. youngish 20 something Euro guy, at the venetian poker room, years ago. acted very splashy ( was only a modest 2/5 game), very vocal at the table, had his phone with a wired ear piece in, listening to whatever. i was almost right across from him, in the 5 seat(5 or 6 seat, are my faves to sit, watch, hear table talk, etc), he was in the 1 seat. he liked to play a lot of hands, and when he was really interested in the flop, i started seeing him pause whatever he was listening to, on his phone. he kept the phone on the table, and just did a very quick tap, not all that noticeable with his arms folded at times. when he wasnt all that interested after a flop, he never paused his phone, not that i could ever see. again, i only caught this after he was there for.. an hour or so ?? not 100% sure he did it every time. but, caught it enough, to think it reliable. got into one decent hand with him. we went heads up to the flop, i believe i bet first, he called.. i flopped a middle set on a "straighty" kind of board,, something like J 10 7. Turn came a 9. i checked, as he seemed to like to bet out, and planned a check raise, but, he made a pretty big bet, which set off alarms in my head. i flat called after thinking a bit. river comes a 7, and i make a boat. i bet about half pot, he takes the bait, shoves all in, i snap call, he shows KQ for a straight he made on the turn. he had i think, a flush draw as well. he bought back in, but, was not involved in many hands afterwards, and still paused his phone, whenever he did get to a flop, if he liked it.

I had A5 suited on a AA4 flop. I raised and a lady reraised me but when she did her hand was shaking. I made a tight fold and she showed AQ proudly. Phew!

I was playing a daily at the Rio during the series, and a rather young TAG fired a barrel on the river, and held his hand in front of his face like he was hiding behind a wall. I never saw him do this when he had the nuts.

Live tells (in clusters) have worked out for me quite a bit ;but only once I have a baseline for how people play and act normally. I like to use my waiting to be seated time to observe people playing and make notes (I keep notes on everyone I play live against).

i really like watching the analysis you bring us.... im not a great player, nor do i pretend to be. i play small tourneys, and lower limit no limit games. the biggest thing i take away is that i dont think most of us play at the high levels where these theories apply. and i rarely sit down to a table of like thinking robots!.. not everybody plays " correctly" and many are flat out terrible. yet i still hear the old " youre not supposed to do this" most people dont give a crap what the " correct " thing to do is!... at these levels?.. decisions are made on feeliing 😂

2:53 I think flatting the four bet is the best play. To me, SB screams QQ, but I can't be certain. I think flatting Aces here is GTO optimal, so Aces are in our flatting range. If our opponent is scared and we have Aces + mid pocket pairs + strong suited connectors in our range, we have a large advantage going to the flop.

B) call. our min click 3 bet might have been interpreted as weakness from sb so we definitely can’t fold AK just yet. 5 betting AK to any sizing in live poker would be a massive overplay.

call pre proflop or small re-raise. I wouldn’t even thin bet the flop considering I can just check and get a free ace/king on turn or river and then value bet once it hits.

Call. I am not nitty enough to fold but neither am I aggressive enough to re-raise. AK is ok but its still behind a few hands. Lets go to a flop as cheap as possible.

Call and see what develops. You have position but only A high so far. 1100 over 300 over 200 from the SB? That's a strong play. The SB did what they wanted they needed to get heads up. Their range is either a big pair or an airball (polarized as they say.)

When someone makes a sizable cold 4-bet into my min-raise into a UTG opener, I'm calling as a default play unless I know the player gets out of line. It could even be a fold.

Exactly people arent 4 bet bluffing and 5 betting than opens you up to getting jammed on which is nasty at that stack depth.I dont even like the flop bet i mean what are you folding out?

I'm not a fan of the min 3-bet. As played, I'd just call the 3-bet. The reason why a lot of double barrels get folds after the 3-bet is because you've given the opener the opportunity to call with everything so naturally they are going to have a weaker range.

Live tells are real, even online sometimes. But like poker itself, they're much more complex than one might initially presume. Joe Navarro, Behavior Panel (youtube) and The Behavoral Arts (youtube) are excellent study resources. Although Mike Caro's material is a bit dated, it should still be read.

Yay I love the part where I get to pause the video and write what I would do.... I'm calling. Assuming his gut-read on her is pretty accurate... What would she have that "should" be a reraise but you gotta work up the nerve to pull the trigger? AA, KK, nope that's easy. QQ JJ, AK, AQs... that's more like what I would guess, in which case I'm not terminally crushed. I'm already heads-up in position so there's not much point in reraising.

I think 5-bet small. We do have position, but still I’m happy to get money in pre-flop with AKo rather than call and play post-flop with a nonsuited nonpaired hand.

@@chanoone7812 whooops! You are right it was 300bb. Ok fine you can still call or 5-bet small and fold to a 6-bet… Then you do a 20-30% block bet on the flop and if you get raised you fold. That’s all…

This is a typical situation I see often and when you have not landed an ACE or a king here you need to find a fold. If stacks are different i.e. she has 80k she could afford to bluff you here and I would as well. With stacks as they are, the 8k re raise is not folding today.

paused it.. i would flat call.. she re raised, big, with 2 players behind to act including original UTG raiser, whom you take to have something solid.. yet she blew him up..so yea.. i just flat call.. AK is great to start with, but doesnt beat anything but total air, if you dont pair or better.

Both varieties of Ace King are often over played. This video shows that a professional poker player can fold a hand like that. To disregard the actions of every opposing player can be disastrous. You don't know if they've got pocket aces or they're just trying to bluff you and seeing if you're going to fold. This is why they call it gambling. You make your best educated analysis and hope it works out. Give me a loose that hand. But in the long run you'll be ahead.

We are in position. You can’t fold AK!! And raising seems too aggressive Bc your trailing all the pairs. And if they have AA or KK we are in big trouble. Just call and let’s see what happens on the flop.

You have position and in case your “read” is wrong I think you should mostly call. If you 4 bet and get 5 bet you end up playing a bloated pot playing 300 BB’s deep.

I like the 5-bet pre-flop (and the sizing), in position, you'll nearly always get called. Makes for an easy lay down to the reraise post flop (because you certainly have not induced a bluff). Can't argue at all with how the hand was played.

Live reads aside, do you really think a random lady in the field is ever 4 betting light here ? Seems pretty clear the answer is no. AKo is doing absolutely terrible against that kind of range and seems to be a clear fold

Probably would have folded, but it’s because AK is a curse for me. Can’t win with it (not for a lack of good play but the rate at which I get outflopped/outdrawn on the turn or river when I have AK is near 100%) and I can’t beat AK either when my opponent has it. But that’s just a silly superstitious reason I would have folded here. The main reason is a min open from UTG pre followed by a min click 3 bet by the CO, followed by a massive 4 bet from the SB looks unbelievably strong from the SB. Even if they seemed pained to do it but acted like they had a hand they had to do it with, best case scenario I’m flipping against like pocket Js or Qs or they have AK as well..... worst case, they may be angling with a big pocket pair that has my AK crushed, trying to peddle AK with their acting/mannerisms. Calling is definitely the optimal play to induce bluffs on later streets and since the BTN folded and you have position with the AK, but given how strong the SB’s preflop action looks compared with how unlucky I am with AK, I probably would have just folded unless it was suited.

@@victoryu3978 lol no worries. Given your reply to my OP, I figured you probably only read the first part of my post. The optimal play is definitely to call though, I realize that. But to add to the main narrative about this video (using live tells/reads), I have sighed and said “I guess I’m all in” when jamming with pocket AA pre before as an angle and gotten paid for it. I’ve seen others use the “I don’t like it but I have to value raise big” acting job when they bet big as an angle with nutted hands. If your opponent uses that type of acting when betting big in a live game, if you have your opponent pegged as a rec, there’s a better chance they are strong. If they appear to be too skilled to utilize such an angle, it comes down to your perceived table image in their eyes. If a pro has you pegged as a rec when acting pained to value bet/raise, there’s a better chance they are bluffing figuring even a rec would smell something fishy but will probably read it as strength and fold. If a pro has you pegged as a pro/skilled player when using that type of an angle, they likely will think it smells like BS to you and you may pay them off so there’s a higher chance they will have a big hand.

@@jaredcarrick3468 nobody has time to read long discourses lol. Basically, Folding AK to the 3-bet is not an option. No such thing as “it’s unlucky for me”. Seems to me calling and small 5-bet should both be valid options. You might be able to fold to a 6-bet jam with AKo at this depth… yes I looked it up-with no 3rd party involved you can fold to a 5-bet jam from the SB so you shld be able to fold the 6-bet jam for sure. But not to a 4-bet raise. If you face a 4-bet from say UTG1 with no 3rd party it’s mostly jam and some call… unless of course you are against a nit.
