When a billionaire meets a poker professional you know there are going to be fireworks! Bill Perkins & Doug Polk delivered on their promise to bring an extremely exciting heads-up match as they are playing with over $500,000 on the table!
Jonathan agrees with Bill Perkins' decision to call the 4-bet preflop rather than 5-betting. If Perkins were to 5-bet then Polk would only continue with his very best hands and with such a strong holding Perkins wants to keep Polk in the pot.
On the flop Bill Perkins should check-raise at some frequency due to his poker hand being vulnerable to being outdrawn to Doug's potential bluffs. Calling to keep in his bluffs is completely reasonable too! A huge factor to consider is the effective stack size, the deeper you are the less you want to raise as you may face further aggression from a hand that could be dominating you.
When deciding whether you should continue bluffing you should always consider if your hand actually has showdown value. Many ace high type hands do have show down value so they are often not the best candidates to use as bluffs, you can often beat some of your opponent's draws if you can get to a river cheaply!
Doug Polk is a part owner of The Lodge Card Room along with Brad Owen and Andrew Neeme. Doug has $9,500,000 in live tournament earnings and 3 WSOP bracelets, which includes a win in the $100k Super High Roller for $3,686,865 in 2017.
Bill Perkins is a hedge fund manager, film producer and amateur poker player. He plays in some of the highest stakes cash games and tournaments around the world. He has $5,400,000 in live tournament earnings.
Doug Polk issued a $100,000 open challenge to the world, Bill Perkins immediately accepted and was the first challenger. Bill ended up winning $29,900 on the challenge. Other challengers have included Scott Ball, Kevin Rabichow & Ethan 'Rampage Poker' Yau.
This exhilarating poker hand that took place during a high-stakes showdown at The Lodge Poker Club in Texas, USA. In this nail-biting cash game, poker legend Doug Polk and business tycoon Bill Perkins went head-to-head in a $100,000 Heads-Up Challenge with blinds set at $200/$400.
🃏 Preflop:
Doug Polk starts the action with a raise to $1,100 from the button with As Tc, and Bill Perkins decides to 3-bet to $3,800 with pocket queens. Doug Polk decides to use his hand as a semi-bluff and 4-bets to $13,000. Bill wants to keep all of Doug's bluffs in so he decides to just make the call. The pot quickly reaches $26,000 before any community cards have come, setting the stage for a showdown of epic proportions!
💥 The Flop: Js 6h 2s
The flop is revealed and unfortunately for Doug he completely misses it. Bill checks to the aggressor & Doug has no problems in firing out a $8,500 bet with just ace high. Bill makes the easy call with his overpair and they head to turn with $43,000 in the middle.
🔥 The Turn: 2c
The turn is a complete brick for both players and Bill checks again. Doug now ramps up the pressure even more and decides overbet for $52,000. This puts Bill in the blender as Doug has played his hand exactly as he would with pocket kings or aces to which Bill is behind. Knowing that Doug has the ability to run huge bluffs he makes the call once more.
🚀 The River: 9s
The river card is unveiled which doesn't help Doug. Bill checks one final time. Doug Polk blasts the remaining $157,200 chips in his stack into the middle to put Bill to the ultimate test! Bill goes deep into the tank and cannot decide whether to call or fold. Watch this poker video to find out exactly what he does!

terrible bluff. what's he repping on the turn that's still good on the river? 99? he's announcing that he had to be bluffing at least one street there and if he's bluffing one, it's possible he's bluffing two too, so bill has to call. maybe the bluff gets through if he bricks the river, but the spade is actually a pretty bad card for him after bluffing the turn. there's just no credible story he's telling.

So, this is interesting. Does Doug pile it with AA and KK here if he does not have a spade in his hand, or is that too thin? This matters because, when he piles, he has 3 JJ, 6 AA, 6 KK, and say 6 or 7 flushes. But he has probably all 16 of AK, 8 AQ, plus any number of combos of other garbage that he likes to 4-bet such as the hand he has. That's 21 value combos to maybe 40 bluff combos, but if he builds small bet sometimes on this river, then his thick value combos collapse to 15 because now some of those overpairs are slotted into small bet. In a way, this is not the best river to bluff because it forces some of his value to check back or bet small-- sure he has a lot of flushes as the 4-bettor, but range on range, I think Bill actually has more flushes, because he has fewer pairs, and won't have any offsuit 4-bet bluffs in his range as Doug does. I think Doug is likely betting range on this flop in a 4-bet pot in position, meaning he would have to give up a third of the time on turn and a third of the time on river, or fire everything on the turn but then check back and give up 2/3 of the time on the river to be anywhere near balanced, and, I don't think he is, so this is probably an easy call, especially if you are a billionaire WHO USES A HOT GIRL AS A RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR.
@wfchannel4673

pretty much this. aa and kk check back, jacks don't bet that sizing on the flop, for every hand doug has with the ace of spades he has that same hand with the other three aces. there just aren't enough made hands here and too many bluffs for it to be correct for bill to fold.
@Badbentham
@Badbentham Жыл бұрын
The spot is a bit similar to Mariano vs Jungle from Hustler. - I would guess that AA, no Spades, is more often than not a shove, especially in a 4-bet pot . Even more so with Doug vs Bill. And, yes: Matusow may disapprove. 😉
@wfchannel4673
@wfchannel4673 Жыл бұрын
@@Badbentham aa bets bigger on flop. doug bets 1/3 pot. if the mariano hand is the hand i'm thinking of, mariano bets 2/3 pot there. that pot is also 3-bet in a ring game, this is 4-bet heads up. bill's range shouldn't really have KQs where it's the bottom of jungleman's range (KQ 5-bet bluffs or folds. if it's gonna call, it does that instead of 3-betting). furthermore mariano's board is much more connected than this one as you can have both top pair and a flush draw, with Js on this board you can have one or the other, not both. not only should flush draws not even be there on the flop, they aren't the hands that call. since doug has As, which means bill never has the nut flush draw, the worst hand bill can have is pretty much 77 maybe A6 but no way he has a draw, he has at least a pair that doug's betting on the turn and river indicates doug doesn't beat

don't really like doug's line here. betting that big on turn says he has air or a hand that isn't scared of the flush. then betting big on river that puts a flush on the board again says he has air or a hand that isn't scared of the flush (notably not that he has a flush). so the only hands he can have are 22, 66, JJ, or 99. 22 and 66 don't 4-bet pre and JJ doesn't continue bet that sizing on flop, so that only leaves 99 which also seems unlikely to be played this way.

@@catbuikhang6482 if doug has that his sizing on flop should be higher or he should check. when the turn pairs the board, doug can stick with his sizing but the flat implies strength from bill. he then needs to bet smaller on river to suggest he's betting for value for a believable bluff. alternatively he can bet smaller on turn and shove river and his line is believable. betting big both streets he has too many bluffs because the story he's trying to tell only had a good hand on one of those streets. furthermore if doug has aa or kk why is he turning them into a bluff on the river when they have showdown value. so those hands can be immediately discarded as possibilities.

Prettu confident for solver slaves this is the wrong hand to be doing this with for king of the solver slaves. And having Q spades is not kinda moot for perkins, he would prefer to not have it cause you want your opponent to have it, but helps if he has any other fd. Perkins is not playing GTO. GTO requires both players to always play perfectly optimal for a solver's recommendations to be valid/applicable. Of course, a solver almost always recommends three options...each with required frequency...pursuant to millions of optimally played simulated hands. Which, since Doug knows Perkins isn't playing GTO, he's got to adjust accordingly. He picked a spot, gambled and lost. Like we all do. Ain't no thing. It'd be interested in knowing how much he has at risk. I'm sure it's a fraction of the stakes.
@iamamish
@iamamish Жыл бұрын
Doug addressed this point in his breakdown of Negreanu's play in their heads-up challenge. He talked about spots vs. frequencies - in this case, it may not be the ideal spot to barrel due to blocking hands you want your opponent to have (at least on the flop & turn), but Doug's point was that overall frequencies heads-up are so much more important than picking the exact right spots. Of course on the river, Doug wants to have the As.

It's a good bluff. In this spot you actually want to have Ace of spades, because you block the nuts. Which means when your opponent cannot have the nuts he is more likely to have marginal holdings which you could put in a rough test. Not really sure whether Bill thinks about this in a same way, but he is somewhat lucky that he is not holding spades, because most bluffs will be coming from Ace of spades, something, King of spades, something.

Playing for 'rolls' (presumably poker bankrolls) can't (shouldn't) leave someone broke. Nowhere close in fact. One's poker bankroll should only ever be a small fraction of one's net worth. At least if you're interested in pursuing poker properly. The whole idea behind that is to protect against becoming a degenerate. Playing for net worth 'rolls' is exactly something only degenerates would do. But, yes, such a poker match would leave the loser utterly broke. So which two pros do you find to be the dumbest (the most degenerate) is the real question being asked. Let's see what everybody thinks.
