Short deck is only 36 cards, there are no 2-5, so the 6 is the lowest card, so he had 9,8,7,6 and the Ace for the 5 card straight, it's just like having ace, 2,3,4,5 in holdem

Let me explain to all of you, the way phil ivey one was because of short dec rules. so all cards between 2-5 are removed from the dec. u r left with only 36 cards. so the community cards are 9, 8, q, 7, 6. and phil got AA. so like a straight the lowest card in this format is 6. so A,6,7,8,9. is five cards and thats how phil won a straight.

Well, the answer to the "why does short deck mean AA makes a straight combined with 6-7-8-9" question was answered, but another one hasn't: are they not allowed to exchange piles of smaller chips for fewer bigger ones? Do they just not want to because it's harder to count total chips and/or is intimidating in some way?

For everyone still confused, this is short deck, 36 cards, not typical 52. Starts wth A (lowest card, counts as a 5 I suppose) then 678910JQK and then ace again can count as highest card, 14. Same thing applies to 52 card where Ace counts are lowest card, so one, and highest, 14. Wait till you figure out a straight beats a flush in short deck, lol.

A flush beats a straight in short deck poker, I believe you’re thinking of the rule where a flush beats a full house in short deck poker because it’s much harder to get a flush without the 2-5 of each suit

It's short deck poker, so cards 2-3-4-5 are off the deck. That's why A-6-7-8-9 is a straight, just as A-2-3-4-5 is a straight with a full deck. Hope that helps!

This is SHORT deck.. in normal Holdem A2345 is a straight, it counts as the bottom. In short deck the deck starts at 6, so A still plays as the bottom of the straight, A6789.

@@Josho4096 No, straight does not beat flush in Short Deck. Easy mistake to make but what you’re referring to is that a flush BEATS full house, contrary to Hold’em, and this is because a flush is a lot harder to hit when you’re missing the 2,3,4 and 5 of each suit.
