I actually like the idea of fighting a different boss that turns out to be the mimic tear. It would've been cool if you could've found the corpse of a boss outside the arena to environmentally foreshadow that the tear mimicked and killed the previous boss. Then, once you defeated it, it determined you were a stronger vessel, and thus transformed into a duplicate of you for phase two, as a last ditch effort to win. That could've been a cool way to get the mimic tear summon ash as well.
