You guys are so right about the learning a language instead of calculus or something else. I am English and its honestly embarrassing travelling around Europe and having appalling language skills, when people there will flip languages 3 times within 3 minutes to find one to communicate with you in. You guys are so goddamn right. I'm going back to German lessons!

That's so great that You came to Poland. :D I was sorry to hear about that security guy, but they are a little over the top here. I always get fallowed as well, because I carry a big backpack with me, and that obviously means that I'm at the shop to steal something. It's really obnoxious. Trial mix is called "student's mix" here, because it is considered a diverse and healthy snack, and who snacks a lot? Student's while studying. But maybe not on the "student's mix" those days. That's how it was years ago, before chips and all sorts of candies were avaliable in Poland. Your Polish is very good. :) Not many words, but very good pronunciation. ;) It's true, that to this day still a lot of people in Poland, especially those working at the store counters, don't speak foreign languages. In Central Europe a lot of people speak Russian more than English, especially elders. It's because of the Soviet Union. In Latvia, for example, 26.% of population are Russians. And in Central Europe people give strange looks for all english speaking people. I don't know why. I think it's exotic for them. I see that when in trolleybuses or buses.

You're right about learning languages. I'm learning 2 foreign languages too. But let's think - if you go to a random grocery in your country, do you expect a cashier speaks Spanish, French, Italian, German or any other language than English? I'm sure not. Many people know at least one foreign language in Poland, but obviously you can't assume that everyone does. I can't imagine going to a foreign country and not being able to say a word in their language.

So according to your logic in the US train stations should at least give information in french or spanish? I can tell you that in most of european cities the info are given in english for a real good reason : - train to airport or for England, they basically use the language of the country where they are going to, which is how it should be.

I know this comment is old, but I think they're just culture shocked. In the US you'll find that most things are actually in both English and Spanish, and depending on where you are you'll actually see more things in Spanish than in English. If you look at the tags of products you'll usually see English and Spanish, but sometimes you'll also see French and Chinese. But that's only because we're very diverse as a country. Perhaps they were expecting something similar in Poland.

Sadly Polish people tend to be quite racist, they might think they're not but I'd say they're not as tolerant as a lot of people :'( I'm polish and proud to be, so aside from any of that hope you enjoy your stay, it's a very beautiful country nevertheless!

I know what you mean about the language thing. I only speak English and very broken, very bad French which is sad considering I did it for 13 years in school. I haven't gone anywhere outside of Canada or the States but when I do I'm going to be so fucked. I've been using Duolingo to brush up on my French whenever I don't have anything to do at work and it's helping a bit. But I don't think I'd be able to learn a completely different language from it

I'm having a problem at the moment Damon and Jo, I want to travel a lot but I stress so much about safety in foreign/ unknown places How do you guys cope in a country when there's a possible safety risk? Especially with the risk of terrorist attacks rising in a lot of European countries?
@Bllackstaarr9 жыл бұрын
The risk in European countries is not actually as high- for us, Europeans the thought of legal weapon is creepy and we think of the USA as dangerous. London and Paris were always quite dangerous cities with few terrorist attacks in the past already-though rest of the Europe is save. I've been to Germany, Czech Republic and Spain this year and there werent any problems. Following the news and avoiding big events in capitals is the key and I would say that eastern europe, scandinavia and balkans are safe, the only risk exists in western europe.
