I was being followed on the street for about 6 blocks. I found a group of people and pretended that I knew them and told them quietly that the guy was following me and they went along with it.
I have never gotten mugged because I adapt to the pace of the city. When I am in Amsterdam I walk really fast and pretend I know exactly where I am going. The biggest mistake is to pull out a map. You are better off checking out your map during coffee or lunch and there are always a lot of signs on the streets anyway. Plus, When you are traveling, does it matter if you get lost? Also, look and walk confidently. I have a "zero fucks given" attitude when I am in the streets of a city and I have never been bothered by anyone.

I'm from a third world country so I think I can give some tips: -I know this might sound gross but put some money inside your socks!! One never know when you're gonna need that. -Ladies, DO NOT CARRY IMPORTANT THINGS IN YOUR PURSE. -As they said here, keep your hands in your pockets in crowded spaces. THIS IS IMPORTANT. -I know this is hard but only put on earbuds in safe places like the train, an store, a mall, etc. -Keep a little amount of cash in a different part of your pocket, purse or whatever and in case you get robbed, you give them that. -Hide that Iphone ! -Don't carry ANYTHING on your back pockets (this is a basic) -If they don't look like they have a gun (even if they say so) SCREAM, MAKE AN SCENE. I hope this can be useful for someone. :)
@fotorolo7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I always carry "Throw Money". Small bills and coins in a separate pocket - when in danger, just reach in and throw this money on the ground - then turn & RUN. They will always go for the money on the ground first, it's instinct. Failing that, act crazy, angry and SCREAM, let it ALL out... they will run. I am 55 and have travelled all over.

when you live in countries where theres a high disparity between the rich and poor theres always chance of armed robbery, which is super scary. when i was in nigeria car hijackings were really common. the most interesting one to me where we got away is when my family were coming back from church and our car broke down in traffic. some guy came to help us and my mom was like, "no, go away we dont need your help" but he refused and helped pushed our car to a location he recommended. he pushed it into some dark alleyway and then like ten more young men came out and then they started banging on our windshield and windows in an attempt to scare us, demanding for money (no guns tho, it was the middle of the day). i was like nearly shitting my pants but i looked over to my mom and she just looked super bored and slightly annoyed. anyways, my mom kept saying "no" she didn't have anything, she gave all her money to the church. then a random biker guy came out of nowhere(?) maybe my mom called him) and offered them money from his own pocket if they let us go. he gave them 3000 naira ($15) and they let us go. we drove on and the biker followed us. we then pulled over after a few minuted and the biker pulled up to the drivers side then my mom pulled a WAD of cash out of her bag (my mouth dropped) and gave the biker a few notes. short story, my mom's a boss

I've been mugged twice in my life. The first time was in 2011 in Brazil (where I live) I was walking back from school and two guys aproached me, one was holding me while the other was going through my pant pockets and he stole my phone. The second time, was 3 years ago. I was at a subway station in Italy waiting for the train when I saw three boys (a bit older than me and were obviously poor and probably not from there) sitting next to me, and they were looking at me and whispering to each other. At first I didn't mind and entered the train when it arrived. When it was my stop, I got out of the train and guess what? The boys did too. And they started following me on the street. Then I saw a group of people about my age and I walked to them, smiling like I knew them and started talking in portuguese (they didn't understand anything) then I said in english that those boys were following me and they understood, they hugged me and all that. The creepy boys walked away when they saw that I was with them.

1. Don't flashing money, jewelry, electronic goods. 2. Don't be out late at night walking. Where I am, if it gets dark you need something with a engine to get around. 3. Find out where the seedy areas of a town are and avoid them. Some places may be safe if you travel in a group, but not if you are alone. 4. Don't pick up hitchhikers or you hitchikeing, either way you are looking for trouble. 5. Don't be too trusting of others. Seen it with too many American tourists. Leaving your street smarts at home is not a good idea. 6. Don't use a map other than in a resturant or place you can sit and have a look at it. 7. Don't use an ATM. If you need money go into a bank it may cost more, but is safer. But if you have to us a ATM. Put away your phone you don't need a bulls eye on you saying come and get me, my attention is elsewhere. Instead continually look around you as you withdraw money or if you have a friend, have them play look out. Don't accept help from a stranger or even the security guard if they offer. Tell them to back off. 8. Take your earphones out of your ears and your nose out of your phone. Be alert. Those looking for trouble will be less likely to go for you if you can see them coming. 9. If in trouble some places if you yell for police it doesn't work. Yell FIRE! FIRE! (was told this by more than one cop) People in many cases when they hear someone shout they need the police, they don't come to help instead, try to hide so as not to get involved. But if they think there is a fire they will come and look. Most then will not turn away from something they see happening in front of them. 10. If using a car to get around. Be careful at stop streets and traffic lights, especially at night. Hot spots for hijackings and snatch and grabs. Always make sure you have enough space between you and the are in front of you than you can pull out from behind them to get away. Keep doors locked at all times and windows close. To stop snatch and grabs. Put what you can in the trunk of your car, and don't leave anything on the seats in the car. If I really had to think long and hard about what else to say, this list would be VERY much longer. But these are some of the main ones many make the mistake of doing. Take this from a local living in one of the countries with one of the highest crime rates. If we do most of what is on this list. How much more careful you as a tourist have to be?

When I was in Paris with my best friend, we were sitting on a bench underneath the Eiffel Tower waiting for it to light up and this group of three guys comes up to us and start asking us what languages we spoke (English, french, spanish), but we just kept silent and looked at them like they had chickens for heads. And then one of them points at my phone and makes a gesture like he'll take a picture of us (as well as asking in French because I've been learning it for years). My sketch alert system was like, "this dude is just wants to steal my phone." So I just start shaking my head and say "No." The guys looked so stunned and thankfully walked off. Thanks for sharing your stories! Hope you both don't have to deal with muggings again.

Ok so, been mugged... grand theft auto style. It's a Saturday afternoon, on my way home from a little "treat yo'self" expedition at the mall... on my way home, traffic was terrible so i decided to get off the highway and take side streets.. For about 10 minutes there is a car full of people following me.. They end up rear ending me and i get out to look at the damages. Nothing was done to either of our cars. The driver gets out and asks me if i want to exchange information, and i told him no it was fine to just be careful and enjoy the rest of his day... he insisted on exchanging information. In fear of refusing, or driving off just to get the cops called on me for a hit and run... My sketch meter should've been going crazy, but it wasnt... mainly because nothing this crazy has ever happened to me. So, I turn around to walk to my car to get my info, next thing i know the passenger (a HEFTY female) of his car is running at me at a full sprint, pushes me down onto the concrete, punches me in the face, gets in my car and drives off... the other guy obviously got back in his car and took off behind the lady who took mine. Mind you.... my phone, my keys, my purse/wallet, $500 worth of new stuff i had just bought, a badass sound system... everything... MIND YOU, it was rush hour on a Saturday afternoon, a few dozen people were at the same stoplight, but NOBODY stopped to help me. Everybody drove off when the light turned green...I was left bawling on the side of road for like 10 minutes before a random dude stops and asks me what's wrong and if i needed to call 911.... who THEN tried to get me to get into his car with him, while on the phone with the cops... Needless to say, I had some very choice words for him.. which he probably didnt even understand because i was crying so much. haha **They ended up finding my car about a week later, with a homeless couple and a baby "occupying' my car... They ended up telling the police who gave them the car (The people who stole it). I got to pick them both out of a line up, and they both got sent to jail. ** The story gets crazier... if you can believe that.

Last november in Madrid I was 100% lost after the bar and looking for my hostel, so I asked this sketchy-ish person for directions. Instead of telling me where to go, he grabs my arm and says, "no you're coming with me, don't you like me?!? we're going to my place" Sketch-o-meter 1000 and I felt like I was about to get sold into the sex trade, but then I started yelling like "gtf OFF of ME" and pulling my arm and ran once I got loose. Luckily, I was like 1 block away from the main square, close to where I was staying, and there were other people there... so of course they would protect me if they saw this man was bothering me. But o-m-g. Scariest moment of my life, but I'm ok, and I made it home safe and sound. Moral of the story -- don't ask sketchy people for directions.

I was in Paris with some friends, and we were walking near the river. Eventually, we ended up at a museum that had something to do with the Phantom of the Opera. Outside of that museum, I noticed there were gypsies. They were holding maps and asking people for directions. My friend got approached by one, and then multiple gypsies started to crowd her. Luckily, I was able to pull her away before anything could happen. Fast forward 15 minutes later, I was sitting outside of the museum with said friend as other friends were inside. That same gypsy approached this man, while another one came up behind and tried to steal something from his backpack. This guy's wife started yelling! She was yelling, "Get your hands out his bag! I see you! Stop trying to steal from him!" The wife was on it! So, fortunately, the gypsies did not succeed in this case. So, my tips to avoid muggers and gypsies and the likes is just to be aware! Keep your eyes open and if it feels sketch, then it is sketch. The one I described above is one of several scams that gypsies use. Basically, gypsies get in your face, while another gets the job done. Also, if you feel like your world will come to an end if something gets stolen, DON'T KEEP IT ON YOU! If someone stole my phone, I'll be fine because 1) I have my life and 2) the Lord wants me to get a new and better phone. But if someone stole my SSN/Passport, then I'll be terrified because that's kind of my identity. So be smart and pick your battles.

When I travel, I usually carry my backpack around instead of a purse. I make sure to leave the important things at the hostel. My friend and I put both our things in one backpack to make it easier. When we shop, we put our things in the back pack. Also, when it gets crowded we have our little method to avoid pick pocketing. I usually carry the backpack, and she walks behind me to make sure no one tries to take anything. Last tip, I promise! If you're going to a market, and you know things are cheap, like the market in Otavalo, Ecuador, make sure you carry a lot of small change. Like 1, 5, and 10 dollar bills, but mostly 1s. And put the money in a few different pouches, so if someone does try to take your money you can hand over a small pouch of a few dollars. Plus when you go to get the money to hand to the vendor, people watching will see you do not have much. Ok I'm done. Let me know if you have any other questions!

In Madrid, two of my friends almost got mugged. One was walking down a main street in the downtown area and noticed a man walking extremely close to her. She then reached down to look at her bag and noticed someone's hand in it. She immediately grabbed the hand and screamed, "Show me your pockets!" They originally acted like they didn't understand why she was mad. We were in a big group so we completely surrounded them and they needed up giving her the money back. Apparently, the man and woman were working as a team to distract people. A week later, my other friend was putting her luggage in a taxi and a very old woman grabbed her phone out of her pocket! Luckily, a girl saw and screamed she took your phone. My friend then pushed the old lady and she dropped the phone! It ended in her screaming at the woman for several minutes!

The (first) exact same incident happened with me too. A couple of 2 boys working together. One was distracting, the other walking every close to me. It was extremely crowded. He was looking away from me, but hand in my (hand) bag. Managed to open the zips w/o my knowledge. Then some kind soul from the back yelled, “he’s robbing you!!” and I quickly noticed. Even as I yelled at him he looked bored, never made eye contact and disappeared into the crowd.

I served the army in Brazil, the army here is scketchy , buut I've: 1. How a real gun looks like 2. If a robber (muggler, or whatever) don't pull the gun on you, from at least some distance, either it is not a real one or he doesn't have experience to use one. 3. If he says he has a gun, DO NOT RUN, 'cause, if he's afraid, and he has a real gun, HE WILL SHOOT YOU. 4. Mugglers, most of the time are really young and don't have experience at robbing, so... 5. Most of the times you can talk your way out of that, by extending the talk until you get somewhere safe, or outsmarting him, by saying you understand how life is hard, or anything else and giving him some, or most of the time your muggling ready, money.

Also if I MUST carry something expensive in a country that is not the safest, I carry it in a small plastic bag. But some fruit or snacks in the plastic bag as well so it doesn't look like anything important is in there. if you double bag the valuables so it looks like your lunch or something, they will leave it alone. If you can. NEVER WALK WITH A BACKPACK! That is a dead giveaway you are a tourist in NYC.

I've never been mugged; but a teacher of mine was in Mexico walking to diner, and when she got to the restraint she realized there was nothing in her purse. The mugger took a knife an slit the bottom of her purse open in the crowded area of the street and picked up the things as they fell out of her purse.

I've been mugged ONCE in my life, when I went to Rio with my boyfriend last year. We weren't in a bad area, that's the thing lol The dude came up to me and said: Hey man, I have a knife (nice -_- ) and I could be mean but Imma ask you nicely for some money (yeah, nicely indeed...). He was shorter than my boyfriend and I, we're both 6 foot 1 lol but still, I didn't wanna get stabbed so I grabbed R$50 and gave it to him, and the prick even thanked me, smiled and walked away hahahaha

I read somewhere that if someone asks for your wallet, phone etc and you can't get out of the situation just throw your wallet away from you and chances are they will go for the wallet which will give you time to run away

During one of my solo trips to Berlin last summer, I had a pleasure to experience "Deaf and Mute Scam". There was this group of people (or rather one huge group that split all over the city), not only on empty streets but also near the main attractions. I met them on Unter den Linden. They pretended they were deaf and showed a clipboard. They wanted to sign a petition - a piece of paper that looked pretty much like that. When you decided to sign it, you suddenly realised there was a column for amount of donation. Meanwhile your charity, you were being robbed by other people from this group. I was basically surrounded by them but I was annoyed with their imporunity, so I just kept repeating "Nein" and walking. I survived. So did all my belongings. But when my friends were in Spain, there were two girls that was taking a selfie and a guy ripped their iPhone out of one's hand and run away. Anyway - as my parents always say: - keep your things close to you, - don't keep all your money in one place, - don't go by yourself to empty streets, parks, etc., especially during night, - if there's something wrong, find someone who looks responsible and trustworthy, - in places like trains, buses and even cafes, try to sit near the older people (preferably older women), because somehow it's safer (usually it really is). I've also heard that it's good to put some grey tape on your camera or something like that. Just to make it look barely working.

I almost got mugged in Paris on the metro. The train was packed like sardines and I was holding my cross-body purse in front of me. A man in a hat and sun glasses came up to me as the car was slowing down and was asking for directions in French, but I didn't say anything and kept shaking my head. Meanwhile, a woman behind me kept bumping into me fairly rough. I glanced behind me after the fourth or fifth push, and the man got his hands into my bag. My friend saw him and pulled my bag out of his hand and started screaming at him. The doors open and he and the girl fled together. As she was leaving I heard her ask him, in English, if he was able to take anything.

I lived in Ecuador this past summer in a small town called Salcedo, but my job was in Latacunga about 15 minutes away. I took the city bus every day and always wore my backpack like that haha. I was told that people on public transportation will come up behind you and cut open the bottom of your backpack without you even noticing. But, I completely agree how stupid that is now that Damon pointed that out! However, this area of Ecuador is a lot safer than other parts, because of how rural it is and the people tend to be very friendly. Also spent a month in Quito and always found myself in sketchy situations. Wish I would have found y'all's channel earlier, but you're definitely my favorite youtubers. Both beautiful people on the inside and out, and you inspire me so much. Thanks for all that y'all do!!

When I'm traveling in an unfamiliar place I always carry a small cross body purse and try to keep my hand over it at all times. It is not always possible to have a small purse all the time, but it does divert a lot of the attention from you when you are traveling. I also only keep what is vital to me during that trip, and keep my other luggage back where I am staying if possible, like if I am going to a museum the tickets I need, my phone with map directions saved on it so I don't have a large paper map, and my id/card/and some money on hand.

As far as the "getting their hands in your pockets when you're distracted" goes, when I'm on the street, I'm usually wearing clothes that have tight pockets. They have space for the stuff I take with me (wallet, phone, keys), but the actual opening of the pockets are small, so to get stuff in and out, it needs to go in and out in a very specific way.

you guys should definitely do a video on how you first got into traveling(i.e the first places you went,etc) and how you become well educated on the places you were going to!
@hello18683 жыл бұрын
really useful and helpful tips! definitely bring “dispensable” cash in your pocket (preferably fake or plastic money) for any pickpockets that manage to get their grubby little hands all up in there!! also to add, i saw a post online once that said it’s best to bring an extra “decoy” wallet and phone/phone case with you when travelling so when anyone with bad intentions approaches you in hopes of stealing your belongings, just throw the decoys at them as a distraction and run as fast as you can in the other direction. most of the time your wallet or phone is all the person wants so creating a small distraction and making them think they got what they sought after (wallet, phone, jewellery etc) is enough for them to lose interest in you as a target. just hope they don’t come chasing after you in this situation!! however, there is the slim chance that they would go further- kidnapping etc. in that case make a scene, definitely find allies in the public to help you, and run to a populated area where it’s harder for the perpetrator to attack. stay safe! really unfortunate that we have to take these extra precautions sometimes when we’re out travelling. the second you catch someone’s eye and become the target, it really is scary. hope everyone stays safe travelling when everything does fully open up again! :)

A friend and I were mugged in Central America. We were tipsy and sat down in front of a church and then five guys came up to us. They pulled out three machetes, one guy pressed his machete to my neck and cut my bag lose. I was in shock and didn't realise what was happening but my friend fought for her bag so the guy just hit her twice in the head with his machete. One of them also turned back to rip my tiny necklace off my neck before they stormed off. It was night and we were on a big street but no one came to help us, only after the guys were gone. The nurses who stitched my friends head were lovely but the police was just bored. The policeman only got serious after I asked him why he worked at the police when he didn't care about people. I think I've never spoken better spanish in my whole life. Luckily, my friends injuries weren't serious, her skull wasn't damaged. I had my proper breakdown when we finally arrived at the hostel. Up until then I worked on autopilot. WELL lesson learned: When you are in sketchy areas don't get tipsy on your own or even with just a female friend. Team up with fellow travellers in each bar, just to be safe. Trust your gut instinct and don't go where you feel even slightly uncomfortable. And give them what they want when they have weapons.

Second time in Paris, I was walking nearby the Parmentier metro station with my friend Paris, from Australia. We both had our phones in our hands, looking at the map to guide us to the post office (Paris had to send something to someone). This is plain daylight. A man came up, running from behind us, and plucked the phone right out of Paris' hands, and continued running. I started screaming ARRETE!! ARRETE!! And then a van LITERALLTY came out of nowhere, out of a little alleyway and cut the robber off, and he dropped the phone, and continued running away... Weird right!?

I would add to Jo's advice about carrying money. If, for some reason, you have to carry a _lot,_ don't put it all in one pocket. Break it up so, if you have to take some money out for some reason, no one sees you rifling through a huge sum of money.

Whenever I feel like someone following me (it happens from time to time) I make turns that are not to get to my destination or go into shops and if the person doesn't go away I will run, I good tip I don't use but I was told was to have a fake wallet with change and a simple phone to take out on the streets and maybe give to the robber, hope it helps. Much love from Colombia
