When Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk was elected as part of a new government, major reforms to restore democracy, restoring the rule of law and independence of courts, and ending what he called “the factory of lies on public media”.
But his efforts have so far met fierce resistance from the former governing party, now in opposition, which still has allies in key positions, including the presidency - resulting in a battle for the airwaves.

In Poland state media is state propaganda. In the UK BBC is London bubble propaganda. I'm not convinced it's much of a difference, really. Over there whoever wins the elections gets a big TV station that pretends to be neutral, here whoever wins the elections has to contend with a big TV station that pretends to be neutral, but naturally recruits from a subset of people who espouse the dominant ideology of Westminster. . What I'd like to see tried is having two distinct public TV broadcasters. One who's board is appointed by the MPs who voted for the current PM, the other appointed by the MPs who voted against the big man's appointment. Yeah it'd be an institutionalization of political polarization, but I feel like having media lie in your face, saying that they are not politically biased, is even more polarizing. And I'm not saying there is no such thing as unbiased reporting - there is. I just don't trust most people to do it, especially if they get state, or generally large institutional funding. I'd rather those kinds of media dropped the charade.

Good luck and godspeed to the new PM and his party, the previous govt (Law and Justice Party, Kaczyński as PM) was semi-authoritarian, it was quite scary to watch the parallels between Polands burgeoning, but fragile (and weakening) democracy under Law and Justice Party and the insidiously pre-planned collapse of democracy in Russia. I was so pleased to hear Poles had chosen democracy last year, the change will be rough but necessary. Whilst TPV gave some good reporting on Ukraine, I had to stop watching as they were so pro-Law and Justice, it was manipulative and sickening. Journalism needs to be an outlet for _challenging_ the powerful, not a masquerading mouthpiece for them.

My friend, "third world" might not be the term you want here. Not being formally aligned with the West or with the USSR during the cold war is not really an indicator of a country's stability or level of discourse. The term is honestly really outdated and widely misused, often for rather bigoted propaganda and comparisons at the end of the day. It's unfortunate.

This is normal in Poland, nothing to worry about. We never had public television, we have ruling party propaganda television. When a ruling party changes, they remove propaganda officers and friends of the old regime and put their own. Those who protest now did the same 8 years ago when they took over. Those who takes over now will protest and try to keep their warm seats when they loose the next election.

government owned public media shouldn't be cost in general but sometimes of course you need it. in moments of crisis, state media can help the general population to get the basic information. butbthe problem now is how politically divided the country is with radical extremist ideology on both sides. they can't see eye to eye. this is making the society extremely fragile and divided. the US doesn't have state owned media per say. majority of Americans get their info from private media. but these private media have their own biases and political affiliations. CNN is the propaganda of Democrats. Fox is the propaganda of Republicans.

With government media sides change every 4-8 years. And new management don't want to keep old guys who defamed them for years. And you also are forced to pay taxes to support government media just because you own a device theoretically capable of watching or listening it. Have a radio in a car you never use, so pay. Have a TV only connected to console, so pay. Doesn't matter if you never watch, celebs friendly with regime need a new mansion. And despite taxes and government grants, "public TV" is still lower quality than private and just as full of ads. And if you see protests and manifestations of support, it is almost fake. Most people don't care, don't watch or don't like public tv here.Especially after last years of sledgehammer pro government propaganda they did. I live near TV building. It is just a handful of brainwashed old people manipulated by low level party members, who try to be noticed by big bosses to maybe get a chance for a seat in the new election.

The key to understanding Polish politics and the whole system is the fact that two MPs imprisoned by Tusk were anti-corruption officials and *at the same time* a corrupt politician from Tusk party - Karpinski - becomes, though *not elected*, through the chain "resignation" of his party colleagues a seat in European Parliament - and thus an immunity and freedom. One also has to know that Poland is a peculiar country where the same political party (Tusk's party) is highly popular among the pre-PiS judges and among the criminals in the prisons of the country where it actually wins a whopping 50-80%...

Exactly, the previous ruling party was semi-authoritarian. As an Aussie, it was such good news to hear last year that the Poles voted for democracy, rule of law and change. Just need to weed out the power-and-money-hungry pollies, inc. their propaganda TV station, to ensure democracy doesn't erode again & people aren't brainwashed into submission. The only real way to counter the current recession is by acting on yourself, making own decisions and making sure that you got enough no matter what happens.
