TL;DR version: 1. Turn OH1 by pressing once green light starts blinking (one blink pause, then one blink pause and so on) it means device is on 2. Press on button twice, when green light starts blinking ( two blinks pause two blinks pause and so on) it means that it's recording 3.Turn the OH1 off, by long pressing on button 4A. When OH1 is off, turn it on near the phone with bluetooh on, open polar beat and it will sync training session. 4B. Alternatively, place OH1 into PC USB slot and it will sync

This double press on the button to record is very confusing. Sometime I thought it was recording but it didn't. Polar should fix this with some type of sound feedback -- like beeps or etc... One short beep = Turn on, two short beeps = recording, 1 long beep = shut down.

I would suggest checking out the Polar Verity Sense which comes with a detachable sensor. How do I know it's actually recording? Does the light flash a different way once recording is started?

Yes, once you start recording, the yellow LED blinks slowly. And when the battery is full, the green LED is continuously on. I hope this helps!

Which is better the Polar OH1 or the polar verity sense for swimming?

They are both good options for swimming. However, Polar Verity Sense has, for example, better battery life and +12Mb bigger memory compared to OH1. I hope this info helps!
