Great video man. I have this problem and your videos are like gold for these old machines.

I had to watch this video several times until I got it. I got lost a few times when you went on a tangent to something else. But maybe I'm too tired to pay attention? But I'm having the same issue with a 1996 Sportsman 400 2 stroke and I think you explained it perfectly and I am ready to shut off the bike. I turned off the fuel the first time to kill it. IDK if that hurt it but choking it with the choke worked and was faster.

Thank you for that advice i just picked up a 95 magnum 425 and is having this issue my first thought was the cdi box and got it ordered then i came across your video

Thanks for the vid! Seems like a common problem with these.

Hey mr fixit 4 wheeler has been running great since the bellcrank change. No issues shifting besides my idles a bit high so sometimes I got to give her a bit of choke to calm her down. I was wondering have you had any luck in finding bulbs for your indicators. I tried and tried but the ones I found were 20 bucks a piece. ended up going with longer ones and am rocking no actual indicator cover. It works for now but if you had an idea I'd prefer to get my cover back on lol.Thanks for always being a help!

Here is the part number for the bulbs: BULB 4030042 Copy and paste this into your browser. I seen them as cheap as $3

excellent. in your diagram at 7:06. the black wires off the panel also feeds to the "electronic speed limiter" in your experience, is that link to kill spark by intermittently grounding the CDI, limiting revs? would be interesting to put a "fast" meter / scope on that wire in reverse, see if it's switching ground, or is only an input.
@MrFixit19 ай бұрын
I would think it is switching the ground to short the CDI intermittently to reduce RPM. From what I understand the REV- Limiter reads voltage from the Charge stator and when it reaches a certain voltage threshold it will trigger a transistor. The "Override" button opens this circuit and bypasses the signal from the stator. I would also like to see a scop on this circuit and confirm this.

@@MrFixit1 looking at unregulated voltage makes sense, higher rpms, more Volts. alternative would be the CDI outputting a switched firing signal, isolating the ELS box should show something output from the CDI, looking for ground. could be duty cycle of only a few %, too low for most V meters. 50% would show as 6v i believe. but i really don't want to pull plastics again.. cool.

I have an 89 trail boss 250 that revs then wont shut off. I don't know anything about what was done to it before. We started it, it ran at idle for a couple minutes, then it reved up on its own (throttle button made no reaction just reving) so we shut the key off and hit the kill switch, no reaction still reving. I pulled the spark plug wire, still running and reving (at this point my mind broke cause thats not a thing ) so i went to pull the air filter and the carb popped off the intake. So i covered the intake with my hand and it still ran for a further 10 seconds and then died out... With no spark and no fuel the engine kept running. I thought it had to be back-feeding over-mixed fuel from the exhaust, so we put the entire exhaust over a pit fire. It shot flames from both ends for quite a while. rinsed it out and tried again... same thing. 2 minutes in and it started same condition. Please anyone, any response might help cause right now it seems like im dealing with magic. WTH my engines possessed!!!

I don't know if it's Magic or pure Evil. I can see the engine finding a fuel source from the crank case being full of fuel but once you stop spark it should die. Only thing I can think of is something in the combustion chamber is glowing hot keeping the ignition proses going, I would suggest removing the cylinder head and piston and having a look in there. Other than that, I don't know what advice to give you. This is a new one for me!

@@MrFixit1 I read an article that said what you just did and they call it "dieseling".

I have a crazy problem might be partially CDI related. My 4 wheeler sitting idle and out of gear will start racing and the only way to shut it down is to choke it (key off, switch off) still runs at high speed. The CDI has nothing to do with the throttling so something isn't making sense. After shut down, it will go back to normal except that the idle speed wavers up and down and then it will shoot up racing again and have to choke to shut it down. It's driving me crazy!
@MrFixit16 ай бұрын
Did this just start doing this or has it always been this way? Did the key work to shut it down before? Sound like a potential vacuum leak problem and dieseling. Something in the combustion chamber getting red hot and keeping the ignition proses going. Just a wild guess. Can you give me a description of how this started and what it ran like before?
@michaelanderson43956 ай бұрын
@@MrFixit1 It started just recently. It actually ran very well before. I was riding last week and it just bogged down and stopped. I popped the seat and noticed there was no fuel in the filter and with a nearly full tank. I cranked it with my hand over the air box and it pulled fuel into the filter enough to get me home (about 1/8 mile). I pulled the carb, fuel lines and reed valve cage (thinking I might have a vac leak) but everything looked good. I put it all back together (new gasket on cage) and it started doing as I described. I've sprayed carb spray around the engine checking for leaks but haven't found any... But the idle just taking off on it's own and not being able to shut off with the key or stop switch... too crazy! I have the 1996 xplorer 4X4 400.

@@michaelanderson4395 Yes this is strange for sure. Try disconnecting the black wire from the CDI to the circuit board and see if it runs any better and then touch the black wire to a good ground and see if it shuts down. this will eliminate most of the electrical circuit. The CDI's can do weird things when they go bad but this, I'm not sure is a CDI problem.
@michaelanderson43956 ай бұрын
@@MrFixit1 No change with black disconnected and that part of the circuit is working ok. I'm sure you are right about something hot in the combustion chamber because I had raced the engine pretty hard for a while and the cooling fan had kicked on... after cool down it never did that again. But I'm out of ideas at this point other than a leak somewhere because it changes as it gets warmer. If I throttle up about half throttle, it spits and sputters for about 30 to 40 seconds and then it will finally race up and run smooth.. lots of smoke.. and then off throttle, it comes back down to idle slowly until it dies. I guess I'll just tear it all down and replace all the gaskets.

@@michaelanderson4395 Have you pulled the drain bolt on the bottom of the engine? the one for the crank case. The crank case may be flooded with fuel.
