I had to watch this video several times until I got it. I got lost a few times when you went on a tangent to something else. But maybe I'm too tired to pay attention? But I'm having the same issue with a 1996 Sportsman 400 2 stroke and I think you explained it perfectly and I am ready to shut off the bike. I turned off the fuel the first time to kill it. IDK if that hurt it but choking it with the choke worked and was faster.

How much air should it draw through the carburetor? I can put the palm of my hand over the opening to the air filter and it doesn’t seem like it’s pulling any air at all. I can spray a little carb cleaner into the carburetor and it will try to start. Would the reeds cause this? Any suggestions? Thanks
@MrFixit1Күн бұрын
At engine start up speed there will be very little air moving through airbox inlet. I would check compression and check the crank seals and other vacuum leaks. It should suck your hand to the carburetor with airbox removed.

How exactly does coolant leak from the weep hole? i’m not seeing a mechanical bushing or mechanical seal that I keep hearing about. I would get coolant weeping out of that hole. I’m just wondering exactly what failed the only thing that I saw that was maybe irregular was the water pump was slightly loose on the shaft not the shaft itself that was tight and true but the water pump housing the impeller was slightly loose. The bearing in the back is rusty, but it still works so I’m assuming it must be that seal that was causing it to leak but doesn’t coolant go through that water pump which is where the weep hole is I don’t understand. Please help me understand.
@MrFixit115 күн бұрын
The weep hole is between the to shaft seals for the water pump shaft. If the seal on the impeller side fails then coolant will come out the weep hole.

Hey man I went through and replaced my stator, voltage regulator and charged my new battery to 100% last night. It's still not recharging at the battery and had tested everything related to the stator/voltage regulator and am not sure where else to look? Any grounds or inline fuses that could be causing this issue at this point. Also appreciate you telling me to just buy a wheel puller instead of polaris puller for harmonic balancer saved me 40 bucks.
@MrFixit115 күн бұрын
Assuming you tested and installed everything correctly, including doing the AC/output test from the stator, check voltage at the red terminal on the circuit board and ground with engine running, you should see charging voltage. Check that the key switch is functioning and ground wire from stator is connected to frame and circuit board. Were the magnets all intact in the flywheel? I have also seen the wires get pushed out of the connectors when plugging in the stator wires at the black connectors. Make sure all the red and red/white and brown wires are in their correct places on the circuit board. Rev the engine to 3000-4000 RPM when testing the battery charging voltage. That's about all I can think of.

@@MrFixit1 Appreciate it. On the flywheel there were no magnets like yours but when I looked at new flywheels they don't have them either it's just a solid surface all the way around. Finishing up my first 400 engine rebuild. Your videos are a big help. I’ll be researching your tuning video I’m sure. Once I get it fired up 🤞🏻. The company I purchased the new block from also provided a break in oil ( low ash mineral oil), do I just dump the whole 500 ml in the oil tank, and top up with 2 stroke oil?
@MrFixit121 күн бұрын
Put the mineral oil in the gas tank and mix with a full tank of gas. Top off oil tank with 2 cycle oil and run both premix and oil injection at the same time. Run for 20 -30 seconds shut off then cool for 10 minuets. Check fluids and for leaks, then run until engine is at operating temp (about 15 minuets) let cool 15-20 minuets, then go for a gentle ride and do this for the first full tank and stay away from full throttle and long high-speed runs for the first full tank of gas, then go play all you want.

Great video have a few questions Could I just run 12 volts through a toggle switch directly to the hub and get around all the wiring under the plastics? I find it bothersome that the chain drive to the front differential spins all the time. Is there a way to get the chain to spin only when I think I might need to use the front diff? Can I just remove the front diff chain so it is only 2 wheel drive or will it in someway damage something ? Can you clean and repack the front hub bearing?

You mention needing a rod and bearing. How does the rod come off the crank and is this something that could be done at home? I ask, because I worked on a Yamaha, where the crank pin was welded and required an entire assembly. I'm am curious if Polaris is the same way?

Specialized tools and knowledge are required to rebuild the crankshaft. I don't think I've ever heard of a welded crankshaft from the factory, but anything is possible, I guess. I have a video series where I disassembled the crankshaft and installed a new bearing and rod. Polaris 400 engine rebuild. there are 4 parts. I just purchased one of these non-running. I can take the clutch or crank and it will only turn about 90 degrees the lock solid. I am thinking maybe a bent rod what do you think?
@MrFixit1Ай бұрын
Look at the crank case under the carburetor ad see if it busted out. A common issue with these 400 engines is the piston skirts brake off and destroy the engine. It is also possible the magnets delaminated from the flywheel and destroyed the stator. Also, possible the reed cage came apart and it protruding into the cylinder bore. A bent rod is a possible cause but, in my experience, if the rod was bent it wouldn't come to a hard stop when rotating the crank but rather have a tight spot. Another possible reason is a broken piston ring catching on a port. The only way to know for sure is to have a look inside. A quick access into the cylinder is by removing the exhaust from the cylinder and look through the exhaust port. Other less common issues are in the balancer shaft compartment, the dipstick detached and is bound up in the gears or water pump bearing fragmented and has gotten into the gears. There are many possible problems. Start with the easiest first.
@sesslerclayton5200Ай бұрын
@@MrFixit1 I appreciate the advise it turns 90 degrees then comes to a hard stop, but worse case I only paid $150 for it and your rebuild videos will help me a lot if I have to rebuild the motor as long as the case is not busted.

I’m desperate so I’m just going to make this comment as a question to anybody preferably Mr. fix it. I bought a 99 Explorer 402 stroke real cheap not running blah blah blah. It’s been four days and I have yet to start it and I can start anything. My question is I’m only getting 90 psi on my compression test and my gauge is top-of-the-line or it’s a good one put it that way and I’ve done it way loose to no avail do you think that it’s the low compression keeping it from starting? I mean, I’ve had things start at 60 psi 2 strokes. It’s driving me nuts help
@MrFixit1Ай бұрын
Yes, Low compression. 115psi is the service limit. try adding a spoon full of oil through the spark plug hole and see if the compression rises. if so then you need a rebuild for sure. (Note use the pull starter to perform compression test and not the electric starter and make sure you hold the throttle wide open)
