Polarized lenses show optical stress in the windshield (polycarbonate or toughened glass?). The instruments black out because the polarizer on the display crosses the polarizer in the sun lens - result = no light transmittance.

Truth is, you can get very high quality non-polarized sunglasses without breaking the bank. Polarized sunglasses are most effective around bodies of water or where there's plenty of reflective surfaces (like glass buildings). So for boating and watersports, polarized sunglasses are great.

It is worth pointing out that the rainbow interference is caused by the windscreen ALREADY being polarized. In this case, you should not double polarize with sunglasses, which causes this effect, or in a worst case scenario, the screen completely blacking out.

Any issues with mono-chromatic sunglasses? I use Serengeti monochromatic glasses for flying, haven't had any issues yet but am wondering if there's anything I am missing?
@matonatomic8 жыл бұрын
Do you mean Serengeti Photo-chromatic glasses? Mono-chromatic means 'ONE' colour - doesn't make sense... could be just an advertising thing. Photo-chromatic on the other hand - is normal for flying. Photo-chromatic lenses react to light/heat and go dark. They should alter your vision other than regulating the total amount of light getting into your eyes.

Why.. i mean fair enough u do you but im bout to buy some myself and i found this video intresting for sure, i remember from physics there was this one image of two sunglass lenses being overlapped at diffrent angles and the view in between the overlap was pitch black. But i mean, really people should only consider this as a negative for polarised if they are in a work environment where this issue is actually apparent. For people like me who arent pilots, drive a car and require something to wear from the sun to combat glare, polarised will always be better than non polarised. Other than that, i guess the choice is between wheter you wanna spend that much or not, but def dont return your glasses just cus of this vid lol

@flightsunglasses4 жыл бұрын
I am a Major Airline Pilot. The screens are not compatible with polarized lenses. Yes you can see, but when you tilt your head the wrong way, you will loose light and colors. Also, The windows are highly polarized and will not work with regular sunglasses (oil slick effect). Polarized may work well with older open air cockpits or specialized instruments. You may also find the cockpit instruments are harder to see when the lighting is dimmer (sunrise, sunset). We deal with thousands of pilots every year. I hear Circular polarization may help, but I haven't seen any commercial glasses that use it. Hopefully, there will be some leaps in technology in the future.

I've been waiting for what I thought was the REAL reason - (at least it was my reason) for avoiding Polaroids when in the cockpit: consider a plane flying directly at you: most of the area of the plane reflecting light into your eyes is the wing; that light will be horizontally polarized (like the reflection from a body of water). Wearing Polaroids makes it much more difficult to notice another aircraft, even in the general case (that is, not approaching you head-on).

All pilots - please consult your eye care practitioner for proper explanations of all of this and any questions you might have about eye protection. This video,does explain what happens - but as to why they happen are mostly WRONG.
@ldmax3 жыл бұрын
The majority of eye care practitioners I have come into contact with have zero knowledge of aviation. When I have specifically asked for non-polarized lenses, they always ask "why would you want non-polarized lenses?" When I answer "because I'm a pilot", they stare at me with a dumbfounded look.
@matonatomic3 жыл бұрын
@@ldmax From this video, their reason for chosing non-polarized lenses is because of the glass windscreens and the 'LCD panels'. Polarized sunglasses will do this to all stressed glass, and LCD screens ANYWHERE (yes, even the LCD monitor that you're looking at). Polarized sunglasses are bad for ANYONE who has to rely heavily on LCD screens. As for the eyecare practitioners you've seen, they obviously didn't pay attention to Visual Optics 101 during their training.
