I found my Polaroid Go at a pawn shop for $40. It fit perfectly in my cargo jacket, so I was able to carry it on me at all times to take a photo when I had the opportunity vs grabbing my backpack from the truck. I will say the downside is that this camera doesn’t do well with indoor lighting *at all* unless you have some white walls or something similar expect your photos to come out dark. All in all I have a lot of fun with this camera.

This is a great video! Las week I bought the Polaroid Go and ohhh... it's so adorable, I'm in love with it. It's so tiny, I can even use it as a decoration on my desk. I can't say this is better than Instax Mini, I like them both. So I'll just follow my heart (an intentions) to choose which one I'm gonna bring with me.

At the moment I use all the current formats from Polaroid and Instax. My favorite Polaroid cameras are the SLR680 followed by the Impulse AF, then the Onestep+. The Go is for day trips to places I have already visited many times. There is always something to take a picture of, places change quickly and the Go is so light to carry and manages to take very well exposed pictures if you pay just a little attention. It would be good if Polaroid could do something about the temperature sensitivity of their films, that’s a limiting factor for the time being when compared to Instax.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I really can't help feeling like instant photos are kinda supposed to be square. I don't like Instax mini purely because of the aspect ratio. It just doesn't look right for an instant photo. That's why I bought an Instax square camera. The film is still cheaper than polaroid 600, albeit the photos are also smaller, but at least it looks more like how I feel an instant photo should look. Polaroid 600 is definitely still my favorite format though.
@coachtomas
@coachtomas Жыл бұрын
How do you find the Instax Square compared to Polaroid 600 ? I know some people feel like they are opposites (for obvious reasons), but would be interested to hear your experience.
@GeneralNickles
@GeneralNickles Жыл бұрын
@@coachtomas it really depends on what camera you use, and how good you are with it. Polaroid 600 has a multitude of different cameras, but most of them are fixed focal length lenses. If you can get one with the sonar auto focus, then they're really good and you can get pretty consistently good results. Otherwise, you kinda have to guess how close you need to be and what exposure setting to use. A separate light meter can help you figure out the exposure, but that's a whole separate skill you have to develop. The focus is kinda still guess work until you get a lot of experience and get a feel for it. Instax cameras have a ton of variation too, but the square format in particular only has like 3 or 4 different cameras. I have an Instax SQ6, which is by far the best of the Instax square cameras. It still takes a bit of getting use to, and learning how to properly use each of the different modes, but you can get really good shots with it most of the time. I actually haven't used any of the other square cameras, so I can't say anything about those. (But the SQ6 is also discontinued, and thus pretty expensive. The other square cameras might be a cheaper option.) The photos you get from each with proper settings and some thoughtful shooting are fairly comparable to each other. I wouldn't say either takes "better" photos, but the Polaroid photos are quite a bit bigger. I personally prefer Polaroid 600 for that very reason. The Instax square is kinda small for my tastes, but the film is cheaper, so I think it's still worth having both. It's also worth pointing out that Instax square film can be a little hard to find in-store. You almost always have to order it online. Polaroid 600 is pretty easy to find. Walmart almost always has it, and target usually does too. If you're wanting to get into instant photography, and you insist on square like I do, then I would say go with the Polaroid. It's roughly twice as expensive per shot, but the cameras are plentiful, and so is the film. The sonar auto focus ones can be a little pricey, but you will better results with that than any of the fixed focal length cameras.
@coachtomas
@coachtomas Жыл бұрын
@@GeneralNickles Honestly this could be the best answer I've ever had on KZbin. ❤ Thank you. Yes the square format is in my DNA I think, even when I draw I begin with a square canvas, no idea why. I think I am going to begin with a Polaroid Go. The Now is on my radar, but film prices are just too high for me right now. I will get some practice in with the Go and see where it takes me. As was said in this video, Go needs lot of light and to be close to the subject. Actually I did find a Sonar Focus Polaroid on ebay UK yesterday, a good price too but they don't make the film anymore... the Spectra ? I have noticed how wonderful those Spectra photos were too, smooth as butter and super clean looking.
@GeneralNickles
@GeneralNickles Жыл бұрын
@@coachtomas yeah, they don't make spectra film anymore. My girlfriend actually has a camera that takes it, and we haven't gotten to use it. There are Polaroid 600 cameras with the sonar focus though. There's also sx-70 cameras with it. I have one of those. The only difference between 600 and sx-70 is that sx-70 is a slower iso. So you theoretically could use 600 film in a sx-70 camera, but they'd be underexposed unless you modify the camera.
@coachtomas
@coachtomas Жыл бұрын
@@GeneralNickles Good grief, that's another thing I love about Polaroid is this history they have. Right now I could afford a 600 camera but not the film. But I am defo in the circle of interest for them. I am a collector mentality, so probably get back to me in a year or so and I will be buried in the stuff lol.

I've had a Polaroid GO for a while now and I avoid using it because it's exposure capabilities are TERRIBLE. You need to be outside in bright light with the sun at your back and I might get a decent exposure. The flash is terrible, i really don't understand how it can actually trigger but apparently have NO effect on the resulting photo. :D Any of my Fujifilm Instax Mini cameras make decent photos almost every time which is why i recommend a Fujifilm Instax Mini to friends that are curious about instant film.

Ive noticed that Polaroid vs Instax is more or less just like the Apple vs Android type conflict. Instax is way more versatile and runs with a wider range of cameras, but there's just something about Polaroid that makes it worth the extra pain to the wallet. I've got an old Polaroid 600, doesn't have a flash, pics are always wayyyy under exposed, but damn I love shooting it. Also side note, about the whole "extra cameras that shoot go film" I really think if they took the very early cameras like the SX-70 or the Pronto! RF, and just shrunk them down, they would be PERFECT for the Go series. I mean how cool would it be to have an SX-70 that folds down to be a only little bigger than a smartphone.

As usual, I want the best of both worlds in one camera. I want the square frame of Polaroid Go but the color, contrast, and most importantly the price of Fuji Instax. I want the form factor and ergonomics of the Polaroid Go but with the versatile features of a Fuji Instax. Why can't they just make one to rule them all?! I just bought the Fuji Instax 99 and I'm not really digging it. The ergonomics make it awkward to hold and the parallax in the tiny viewfinder makes it hard hard to accurately compose with. Thought about switching to Polaroid Go but that system has its own set of limitations. Not crazy about the low contrast, washed out images and the fact that there is no B&W film for it yet. I guess I'm stuck in the middle for now..

Great video! Instax is the winner for me. I love Polaroid, and have shot it for years. I saw the Go in a shop recently. It’s REALLY tiny and cute! I also saw a lot of muddy underexposed images taken with it. An underexposed flash photo indoors? Polaroid really messed up this one. Looks cute, takes low quality photos with its expensive long-developing finicky film. Instax film has more variety, including monochrome film and special edition frames, lasts years past expiration date, is easy to find and is much more affordable.

I am on the tricky path to choosing my first Instant Camera. I've looked at them all ! I have scoured Flickr and Instagram for photos. My opinion. Instax = first time instant camera user who wants "consistent" results and only ever used digital cameras or their phone - needs cheap price point. Polaroid = could be a digital user too, but possibly has a family history with instant film, is a "creative" - like an artist (that's me), musician or a crafter/maker of some kind and dislikes the sterile nature of digital. Also the Go (as I know you know) has double exposure too ! The Polaroid Go has received some hate online, mainly from people who are new to Instants and get frustrated trying to figure out how to get results from the camera. This video today couldn't have been better timed for me. I decided my first is going to be the Go. ❤

Well by your logic, let’s say they go out in five years so if you bought a Polaroid now for $120 that’s $24 a year for the camera excluding film of course) wouldn’t you say you got your moneys worth? @@JustAnotherChris are there non polaroid cameras that can use their film? Because Instax film is like an open system. Anyone can manufacture cameras for it. So you have the option of other brands too as well as even the higher end cameras you mentioned. And within Instax there is mini, square and Wide format. As well as analog and hybrid models. They literally cater to everyone and every taste. Polaroid is more niche by contrast. People's attachment to Polaroid is nostalgia driven so far as I can see. It's liking the idea of owning a Polaroid more than the actual reality when you actually start looking at the ridiculous price of their film for 8 pics. The inconsistent chemical science. And just to top it off.....the new cameras themselves being rather wonky. Instax at least sticks to what they know how to do. They aren't off making speakers and wasting RnD money on stuff no one asked for. While they ignore fixing the problems people have been asking them for years to address.

Make things better quality. To say its a money thing is ridiculous. Impossible project have made so much money of people since re-engineering instant film and could totally make better products for better value. Simple example is Fuji. They make the products that people actually want to buy because they make sense!!! That bundle film pack of 24 is literally the best deal ever. Polaroid, its time to give the people what they want. That is if you actually care about instant photography at all you’ll make an actual affordable way to shoot instant because fuji sure figured it out smh…

The thing is, I hear what you are saying but my philosophy is Instant Film/photography is imperfect by nature. Polaroid film is inconsistent. Instax cameras seem inconsistent, I have read quite a few stories of Instax cameras simply stopping working or issues with batteries, general quality control stuff. Also remember Fuji is a multi billion dollar company who can afford to lower prices without flinching. What ties people tightly to Polaroid is the aesthetic that you simply can't get with Instax, they are willing to put up with stuff that you have covered - purely due to this. Instax produces film that is consistent and cheap. It works because it is accessible. But Instax simply does not capture that magic that Polaroid does and that is their selling point.
