The Japanese lyrics of this song are about a woman who grew up in the upper middle class and fell in love with a no-good man and became a prostitute. Naomi Chiaki. A female singer who enjoyed overwhelming popularity in Japan from the 1970s to the 1980s. Her style of singing and acting was shockingly admired by the Japanese.

I listened to this video again, and there were new things that impressed me. 😲🥰 What moved me was that you said "ちあきさん / Chiaki-san" (8:23) very smoothly and naturally without any discomfort. Your pronunciation was so natural that I almost missed it. In Japan, it is customary to add honorifics and polite words to names. Even just the types of "respectful words" include respectful words, polite words, humble words, honorifics, honorific titles / 尊敬語, 丁寧語, 謙譲語, 敬称, 尊称, 卑称... Wow! Even I, a Japanese person, was surprised! For example, in most cases, honorific titles are given even to younger people and subordinates. For example, "赤ちゃん/Aka-chan" means "赤子/Akago / baby", and even babies are called with the suffix "ちゃん / Chan". They give honorifics to all sorts of non-human animals, plants, food, machines, and actions. "犬 / Inu / Dog" → "ワンちゃん / Wan-chan", "車 / Kuruma / Car" → "お車 / O-Kuruma", "金 / Kane / Money" → "お金 / O-Kane", "手 / Te / Hand" → "お手 / O-te", “米 / Kome / Rice” → “お米 / O-kome or ごはん / Go-han”, etc, there are infinitely many samples. 😱😁 There are some honorifics that go a little too far, but many people naturally utter those words without being conscious of them as honorifics when it comes to unconsciously habituated words. I also don't use honorific titles when calling people I'm very close to by their first name. I often feel that the way I call someone brings me closer to them, and makes me feel closer to them. I've known for a long time that it's a daily custom in the English-speaking world not to add honorific titles to names. However, when I write comments on SNS, I pay attention to adding honorific titles to names. So I've been commenting your name as "Mr. Patrick" (in my mind, パトリックさん / Patrick-san). To be honest, I sometimes want to call you "Patrick", but I don't want to forget my respect for you. In a situation where the intimacy between one person and another person is still immature, I don't think there are almost any Japanese people who feel uncomfortable when they are called with "honorific titles" attached to their names. I have no intention of forcing you to do so!!! However, I was very happy that you became accustomed to Japanese and began to use honorifics naturally without even thinking about it. "I wanted to convey this joy to you." 😁 PS : This song is about a prostitute in a brothel. You saw her singing and performing and you said, "She seems to have experienced and understood everything in this world." I guess that the meaning includes "She knows the joys and sorrows, happiness and unhappiness, the inside and outside of people's lives." Mrs. Naomi Chiaki is a singer and an actress. However! While Mrs. Chiaki was singing this song, I think she was pretending to be the prostitute of the main character. It might be more appropriate for her to think that she herself was possessed by a prostitute. It goes beyond acting, it's a true talent for making the viewer feel like it's 'reality'. She had such great talent. I feel like her talent has been proven even more when you focused on this song as an insert song for the drama. 😊👍

Mr. Patrick, I guess it's only natural that you feel nostalgic when you listen to this song. The original song is an American folk song (folk blues) called "The House of the Rising Sun" or "Rising Sun Blues". There are several recordings of the original song in America in the 1930s. It seems that the person who created this original song is unknown, but if you trace the history of this song, it will go back more than 90 years ago. I listened to the song that was recorded in 1960, and it had a very different image from the song I know, "The House of the Rising Sun." Various artists around the world have covered and sung it, and one of them is Mrs. Naomi Chiaki / ちあき なおみさん. If I do a Google search for "The House of the Rising Sun" in Japan, The Animals from England will appear at the top, but I like this song sung by Mr. Bob Dylan. Mr. Bob's voice reminds me of the American Wild West, and I feel a strong sense of nostalgia. It feels like the sepia-colored air spreads. In the 1960s, Japan was entering a period of economic and industrial development, but not all citizens were becoming wealthy yet, and the shadow of Japan's defeat 15 to 20 years earlier was still lingering. It was also an era when social contradictions became clearer, and many young people were risking their lives to fight against society and politics, such as student movements and security struggles. In the music world, there are many singers with a little shadow such as "Mrs. Naomi Chiaki" and "Ms. Hikaru Utada's mother, Mrs. Keiko Fuji" etc, and the songs sung by them became popular. I can't find the right words, but would it be easier to understand the nuance of "a singer with a thin shadow" if I said "a singer who smells of unhappiness"? (Even if the singer was not actually unhappy, the image was formed by such production and promotion.) The popularity of songs such as "Blues" and "Mood popular songs" may be a reflection of the social situation and the sentiments of the people at that time. On the other hand, the number of young people who wanted to live freely without being bound by existing rules and customs such as hippie culture increased, and folk songs became popular among these young people. However, while folk songs outside of Japan have bright and cheerful melodies and lyrics, I feel that there are many songs that feel the same shadow as this song in the folk song boom of the 60s and 70s in Japan. I feel that there are many love songs that cannot be listened to without crying, such as stories of broken hearts and farewells to loved ones. In the 1970s, there were more songs about love stories and dreams. Mr. Patrick, some of the songs you listened to were from before you were born, right? I am also moved, healed, and excited by songs that were released before I was born. Whether it's an old song or a recently released song, don't you think that listening to music and enjoying life is a happy thing? Don't you think so?! I think so! 😉😋 In 1972, a band called "GARO" released the song "The cafe in the student town / 学生街の喫茶店". This song was written by Mr. Michio Yamagami and composed by Mr. Koichi Sugiyama. Unfortunately, Mr. Sugiyama passed away last year, but he is a wonderful musician (composer and conductor) representing Japan. As his representative work (composition), he composed the theme song for Dragon Quest, and since then he has been involved in music production for all Dragon Quest series. In the 1960s he provided songs for many singers such as The Peanuts and The Tigers etc, and he continued to nurture them. In the 1970s, he began creating theme songs for television animation. These songs became very popular and are still sung at karaoke to this day. In the 1980s, he began creating music in a new field called games. That is the theme song of Dragon Quest, which became very popular all over the world. One of the songs that Mr. Sugiyama created is “The cafe in the student town”. When I heard the song, I didn't know anything about the composer and lyricist. Anyway, it was a song that made me feel soothed just by listening to it. I learned the name "Bob Dylan" from the lyrics of that song. For me, it's a nostalgic and deeply emotional song that makes me feel nostalgic. Please give it a listen someday. 🌱🌱🌱 If you react to this song... Please introduce this song to people who don't know this song. "It's a song created 50 years ago by the composer of the theme song for Dragon Quest." ・・・ add it. 😊🌈 The video below is a live video of Mr. Ohno, the vocalist of GARO, in 2017, 45 years after its release. Unlike when he was young, his voice at the age of 67 has changed to a deep and bitter bass voice, but the songs are still wonderful and invite you to the same atmosphere. ご紹介ありがとうございます。 1972年の“MAKI LIVE”からですね。その前年(1971年)のLP“MAKI Ⅱ”で彼女自身が訳したものですね。 Mr. Patrick, Asakawa Maki is a Japanese (jazz?)(folk?)blues singer (1942-2010). The Japanese version of the song was originally recorded in 1971 on the LP "MAKI II" and in 1972 on the live album "MAKI LIVE". The version by Naomi Chiaaki introduced here is the same Japanese translation by Maki Asakawa herself.
