I live in South Texas on the gulf and when I had my home built it had to right on code. If not, redo! We had Hurricane Harvey come in about 13 miles from our town. We still have families that has not fixed there homes yet. I know, crazy isn't it! Thank God, I did not have any damage to my home. My first real construction job was a home framer. Now that was over 20 plus years ago. I have never had to add metal straps to any window headers. But I also used 2x10 headers! I would have tied the top plate in with these metal straps.

@ShaneZettelmier3 жыл бұрын
I’m surprised your plans called for so many headers, usually in a pole barn style construction or post frame construction the walls aren’t loadbearing so the headers aren’t needed. Are you putting a separate roof on the house even under the pole barn roof? I like that you resolve an issue by choosing the option to go overboard, I tend to do the same, it just makes more sense to me, it might cost a little more but you don’t have to go back and fix it later.

It is very interesting they wanted you to lag studs to the posts, once you lag at the top and the bottom that stud is two blocks with minimal added strength past. These are your added studs as well
@TKCL Жыл бұрын
What I like about all the extra lags is if the post were to ever rot off or have some major issue. It's tied on both side and carrying force via the suds to the footer. That could buy some time for a tear out and replacement.

@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
It's a tough one to figure out
@brianfletcher79423 жыл бұрын
Just talking it through. During a wind shear event if the wind uplifts the house and the strap is only connected to the header, then the top plates could potentially be lifted off causing damage. The hurricane strapping is a system. Seems that attaching the top plates as well and then strapping the roof to the poles would be necessary as well. In retrospect , did the poles get attached to the slab with perpendicularly attached rebar to prevent wind uplift from yanking the poles from the footers? Just thinking out loud. Great job guys.
@jeremiahs453 жыл бұрын
@@brianfletcher7942 yes the poles had opposing rods. Looked like about a foot apart. It’s going to take a lot to pull those poles out
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Correct, those poles are staked with 5/8 rebar, buried 5ft deep and poured into concrete. There is technically no uplift on the wall top plates, just the poles themselves.

Great detailing. We appreciate both styles of videos. Sometimes it's hard to have enough time to watch all of a long video without jumping ahead and possibly missing something. Would a mini-split unit not be more efficient than a window unit?
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Mini splits are nice, but way more money than a window unit. Maybe one day we might be able to get one, but we need to watch money right now with everything being so expensive.
@DeanFamilyAcres3 жыл бұрын
@@TKCL Totally understand that. Materials are currently way overpriced. I wasn't sure if a mini-split was that much more efficient or not. Price points are certainly different.
@TKCL3 жыл бұрын
Efficient? Probably more yes, but I can say our electricity bill went way down when running the window unit at our last house. Being able to keep the house temperature up at night and just cool the bedroom saved us tremendously. We would literally have electricity bills under a 100 dollars during certain times of the year, and that was with a old construction home.
