The pole barn rehab is coming along. We're adding OSB (Oriented strand board) for walls. The shed is not square so we have to do some creative math and cutting to cover the walls that lean outward!

Tim, I dont know that you read all these comments, but I figured this was as good a place to say it as any - I really appreciate how your family, each of you, refuses to be negative or express negativity. The way all of you take everything with measured thought and respond positively even to exasperating situations is really inspiring. I feel that even if you didn't post up scripture at the end of your videos, people would know your faith by your families words and actions alone. Best wishes, from a man striving (though not always succeeding, always stiving) to do the same

Cutting with 2 saw horses. Lay 2 sacrificial 2x4s on the saw horses, spread apart near edges of horse. Lay sheet on 2x4s, set saw to cut through sheet but not 2x4 of course. Safely saw all day with no accidents, cut sheets remain supported. Skilsaw kickback can be very dangerous, particularly at the end of the cut, when Christy took saw.

Just don't use fiberglass blown in. The cellulose products are far better and foil faced foam is better yet. Take a bat of fiberglass without a vapor barrier and place it between your body and the sun. No effect. Use a section of newspaper or foil foam and you'll feel a significant drop in temperature.

Agree. We actually used the pull down ladder like you use in a standard home. Costs a bit more, but handy as heck. We put some decking and sideboards in the tallest part of the truss for a short distance for that much needed extra storage too. We put batting down under the decking, then deep blown-in for the remainder. That small area of decking also made a nice place to step into the attic from the ladder, providing secure footing.

@@jakeschisler7525 - I checked them out. Please note that he was opposed to 'spray' foam due to cost. If you notice, he does not place foam over his roof purlins before placing the steel. If he had, he could reduce the temperature in his attic space by about 25 degrees if it is exposed to direct sunlight. Help with condensation as well. I use foam board and seal it in place with can foam like Great Stuff. I guarantee my building use significantly less energy to heat and cool as his does and, mine is probably quieter and the insulation will not deteriorate with time.

Check out RR buildings or one of the many pole building videos. Most use a lighter gauge steel than the wall or roof. The long length allows you to bridge uneven truss spacing. After the ceiling is in they have insulation blown in. Be sure to leave air flow into and up and out of the space. Take care

We did all steel siding inside our garage/shop area. My brother in law did metal 4 feet up from the floor with the OSB to ceiling. This allows him to hose out floor if desired without water damaging the OSB. I highly recommend doing blown in insulation in the ceiling after you install the metal. Worked great for us. Quick and easy.

Tim, there are Dynastick Self Adhesive Insulation Fastener Hangers (# SAH114) and the Self Locking Washers Round (100) that should help you with the hanging of the insulation. These are self sticking base with a pin that you would push the insulation back up to the ceiling. with the washers, you push them onto the pin and grip it and hold the insulation in place. This is what they used in my workshop, it was a rolled bats, but should work with your foam. I used this on my roll up door and placed the ridge panel on each section and it has worked great. I hope this helps.Put some construction adhesive on the back before you put the panels up; both the hangers and adhesive will hold it up.

I had to put insulation into false ceilings 15in below an existing ceiling once, not enough crawl space to work in. I bought a couple of long rolls of 3/4 wide polyester/polythene strapping tape for crates etc and stretched that across the bottom of the false rafters. We could then lay the insulation across these straps and install the ceiling below. No air gaps in the insulation, it sags down a little in places but lifts back into place as the ceiling sheeting is hung. We used pine false rafters and could just staple to strapping tape to the rafters, so the fixings did not interfere with the ceiling fasteners.

In my shop ceiling of my metal shop we use chick wire - heavy dip - and the bats between the metal roof and the wire. I see the wire if I look up - but it works! Easy enough to do in strips. We had double tape on the top to hold the glass wool up there for a bit as we attached the larger layer and bring up another part - working inside the wire as you work backwards. !!!

My dad would have called that a Murphy built barn. I grew up on Murphy Rd so named after the corner cutting developer who built all of the houses in the development. When we renovated his basement after a flood we had to decide if we wanted to cut our new boards crooked to tie into existing or leave our work square and leave a gap 🤣. The barn is looking great Tim and Christy!

I think the sheet metal strips that holds ductwork up . It's thin enough to cover up and strong enough to hold the foam. They are about an inch wide and 8'-10' long. A screw per joist would be good, and you can spray foam around them.

That barn cat is a really good idea. Here are some important facts. 1 always make sure they are nurtured 2 try to get female cats .3 if possible get two females of the same litter ( sisters ). They hunt together. 4 try not to make pets out of them.5 do not over feed them but don’t starve either 5 be prepared to lose some of your favorite birds. I have used this method for rodent control for ever and it works great no poison needed. Also good for keeping snakes at bay. Good luck.

Most pole barns use blown in cellulose insulation in the ceiling. But what you could do if you already bought the foam. Is to use blown in cellulose to fill the gaps. Just leave a good size access hole and place some walking beams up there before the curling goes up. But it would be easier to fill the cracks using a blown in machine.

Here in Texas, pole barn means telephone/power pole into holes and those holes are put in best they can - at least 3' like others - then Polyurethane to expand once held up. Then more poles to tie them and away we go. I live 200 miles from the Gulf, so a southern wind puts up 90% RH easy. Killer at 90 or above. Martin

As a suggestion for cutting your osb panels. Not having anyone to help me, I made my own sawhorses (4' wide) and put 2x4's staggered about 6" apart across the sawhorses (screwed down). It helped me alot when I was saw cutting them and also cutting for outlet box opening. It also made it easy to clamp the panels down if i needed too. I had over 60 panels to do.

Back in 1995 we bought a building from Menards it was a 30x54 with 2 sliding doors in the front and one by back corner. We hired a contractor and he had to tear down old building which he did because he wanted the old corrugated roof panels. So he also took money off his quote for them. He hired out the concrete people and all in all turned out to be a great building. But if it wasn't for him Menards tried screwing us over for a few items. One being a broken truss and shorted us some lumber. The night they delivered he was there and he caught the mistakes so they ended up fixing them. Now living here in Florida our old building has a roll up doors in front.

My recommendation to support the foam is to use galvanized wire, such as fence wire. Heck you could staple up rolled fencing such as chicken wire or hog panels. Plenty of strength with any of these options, but most economical would be the galvanized wire. Staple it to top of rafters and set foam on it. Or if you insulate peak put the foam up then attach wire over.

Like others have suggested, put up your ceiling then use blow in insulation. Decided how deep you want it and put in a lot of depth gauges. Scrapes of OSB cut to length and nailed to support boards will work great. Leave as big as an opening as you want to get into the “attic” as you want, frame it out with 1x4 on the bottom side to hold the cover up. Frame out the inside in the attic to hold back the blown in insulation. Put your wall insulation on the up side of the cover to avoid a hot/cold spot. On caution is the size of the opening. As 58 yr old, it is nice to have a bugger opening, but as the cover gets bigger it is more awkward to lift out of the way.
