retired lineman, since 96, started in 54. no bucket trucks, no augers, all hand dug, tripod boom bolted together and fastened to back of truck with pins. winch mounted in bed of truck. After pole was set the oldest man on crew shoveled, usually the driver/operator, because he was old and slow. 3 men tamping, not the way these filled the hole. You can bet that cabbage headed foreman made sure most of the dirt was tamped back into hole. I had 42 years of the best job there is, working with the best men on this good earth.Loved every minute of it, well most of it.

My neighbour has built on land outside of their boundary next to a pole in a field with approx 7 metre clearance, will they be made to demolish the building? 👍 The land around the pole was 7 metre but they built on it!

I’ve got to set a couple poles soon for a job. 200 a service feeding two metal buildings. No overhead lines close. I’m sure utility co will need some poles to bring the service in closer.

My wife and I was driving to Kansas from Oklahoma and as the trip continued we noticed at least a mile of slanted utility poles. I commented how dangerous it looked and we also noticed new poles on the ground next to the slanted poles. I told her that I wondered how these poles were gonna be installed. This is why I'm watching this video. VERY INFORMATIVE!!

Thanks for posting, and also for showing the whole thing. I want to install a pole in the ground, not for electrical purposes. I simply didn't know how, and being a woman, it is hard for me to get men to explain how they do it without rolling their eyes at me. Thanks for the rule of thumb, very useful. I have since learned that dirt and/or crushed gravel is better than cement, which holds moisture around the wood. I appreciate this very much.

Well with utility poles they must be cemented so they last for decades.And wont budge or move in high winds.And also think its a federal law that they are placed a certain way.

so if the preform on the guy doesnt hold once the chain hoist is removed can the rake tension cause the guy wire to whip back? i always thought there was some more mechanical assistance with the process other than drilling the anchor hole

Cool video. I just wanted an example of why putting fence posts in concrete is not just unnecessary but probably a bad idea. If a pole doesn't need it my fence doesn't, it just needs to be deep enough.

Why is concrete not used in the hole when installing utility poles, but commonly used with smaller post?

Not necessary. If you're going to swing a pole, you've got the heavy equipment to dig a deep-enough hole, and if you have that, you can afford the extra $80-100 for a somewhat taller pole. That said, steel/concrete poles will sometimes have concrete footings.
@found_treasures831

I came to this video looking at how they can secure such tall poles (thought they must use a ton of concrete). I'm very surprised they use none.

Help! I'm a court reporting and I had to take a meter electrician or whatever in a deposition. I have typed what I think I am hearing him say and have marked the words I have no clue if they are right or not. If you know the words he may be saying, please let me know. Thank you. Here it is: "The pole was approximately the size of a five gallon bucket. You can imagine turning your feet probably at a forty-five degree angle to be able to * stope your * gaff in while pulling yourself with your arms and hands." Any help would be greatly appreciated.

maybe im overthinking it, but im wondering if theres a way of using a level or other device to make sure its perfectly vertical. i know its complicated by the fact that the pole is tapered. do you make a box around the pole? drop plumb lines from a measured distance from all sides? or do you just eyeball it? im thinking of using utility poles to build a second floor on stilts over an existing structure.

No such thing. Lowest-voltage line I work with is 4.16kV, or 4,160V. Typically pole spacing varies by utility company, and is based on conductor sizing and how many phases in the circuit - single-phase can go as far as you can maintain clearance, while 3-phase has shorter span lengths, and double circuits (two 3-phase circuits on the same pole) is shorter still.

@kingtaco1472
@kingtaco1472 11 ай бұрын
The anchors are only installed on poles that are the beginning, end and if they aren't in a straight line. Next time you ride down the road watch. I teach people by riding down the road and saying" straight, straight, curve, curve, straight. And if the lines on the pole stop they anchor for the end of line even if a pole line keeps going for power but maybe cable or telephone company stops you will see they have to anchor the line as they follow the same rules

Alot hot stick or rubber glove higher voltages and they all climb or use equipment to go alot higher. Some put on faraday suits and clip into voltages from Helicopters that are several hundred thousands volts. Just so your home is warm and your entertainment is working. Rain, fire, winds, ice, snow, disasters we are there for you. When your child is in the hospital, (god forbid) look around . Everything is electric. These men leave their warm homes and family to do one of the most dangerous jobs. Hazzards at every turn. So when their in traffic in a city or climbing a hill in a rural area to work. Realize their dedication. Don 't complain when one of them takes a little longer break to cool off or stops for a hot meal after working 8 hours knowing he may have another 10 to go. If you want to complain about us. Try walking in our shoes if you can fill them.

Thanks for the feedback. We are just the media company but it's my guess from making these videos and being around the industry a little that it's still much more cost and time efficient to use the "tree trunks" in most cases. Maybe another viewer would have a better answer though. Thanks again for watching and commenting.

iecSimulations It was a good video though I'd have liked to see them using the big augur to make the hole. I realize it would be too expensive to put power lines underground but it should be considered esp where they are an eyesore in cities. We tend to lose power often here in VA with hurricanes, ice storms ect...

irish89055 It is expensive to bury utility facilities. Safety is also a concern. Do you call to have the facilities located every time you put a shovel in the ground? Many people don't. Utilities don't guarantee depth because we have no control over what happens to the surface after the facilities are buried, i.e. erosion, grading, etc. With many utilities the regular maintenance is also less expensive when it is hung aerially, instead of buried. Just my two cents.
