Hi Shawn. I just stumbled on to your website. Amazing stuff. I was a gymnast and pole vaulter in high school but didn’t have a coach or a clue. I won my conference meet with 13’ and never understood how to bend the pole. I’m 67 years old and wonder how high I could have vaulted if I had had the proper technique. 15’ took state at that time in 1971, so I feel like I could have been good. We started with bamboo and aluminum poles, and bags of foam for our pit. Had a cloud 9 air bag in my last two years. I loved pole vault. Ended up with a 180 lb fiberglass pole, but couldn’t bend it. Clearing the bar at 13’ and winning the meet was one of the best memories in my life. Good luck with your website. Really great stuff. My inversion was great but my plant was all wrong with a bent arm and trying to bend the pole with my arms. My knees are bad, and I’m not so fast anymore but would love to try out your proper techniques to feel that pole bend!! Thanks, Tim

I totally think you should start pole vaulting again! There is a group of master vaulters i can hook you up with if you're interested! Some of the younger ones are in their 60s where the older ones are pushing 100. You'd be one of the young guys!

Team Hoot Pole Vault Thanks for your reply. I’m getting gel injections now for my knees, trying to do what I can before I have a knee replacement. If there are any guys vaulting in southern Florida, let me know. I’d like to see what they are doing. Maybe I could try again. Thanks, Tim

That's a tough one without knowing your situation. 9/10 speed is the enemy of technique. So try dropping to a smaller run, smaller pole, smaller grip and slowly working your way back up. Pole vault is weird that if you try to take too big of a jump on your progress your brain tends to explode. I've blown mine up way to many times to count.

Hey shawn, I was wondering how you keep from leaning back on take off. Do you do that just by looking at the box or is it a combination of that and like keeping your shoulders mobile like you talked about in this video?

I don’t know if your going to see this but I’ve been vaulting for over a year now and I have this exact problem. I got really bad spondy and I always thought it was because I had hypertension. Once I nail this will it keep my hips from launching in? Cause this video describes my problem exactly and my club pole vault coach said instead of doing full approach I should literally do running plant drills till I learn to use my arms. Do u think that’s a good start for the season? Cause it would suck if my spondy got bad again

Grip down a hand hold and maybe a pole depending on how shallow the box is and the athlete.

I've been trying to fix my plant and get my arms straight for a few practices now. Today i was practicing and working my plant, however in the middle of it i psyched myself out. Now i can't mentally make myself vault. Any tips for getting myself past this fear?

+julian stearns go back down a couple settings. Drop a pole drop grip drop a run and work your way back up! No harm in taking a step back to take 2 forward!

Good news! Weather got better and we vaulted today. I got back up to where I was. Still struggling with my plant and getting my left (bottom) arm straight. Naturally I collapse it to the inside. I tried doing the 1:00-12:00 plant drills but as soon as I went back to vault my elbow went to the inside instantly. (Sorry for the long text)

Thanks for the video! My coach was really pushing me to fix my plant at home. I didn’t necessarily understand what he was saying and I needed an more in depth explaination and you got it! No wonder why my lower back was hurting. Also, I have another problem when vaulting. Last 2 practices I have been running through or shuffling right at the end of my run, I think it’s because I am used to taking off under because my arm is usually bent when vaulting. Can you help me out and give advise on how to work through my mental block and “go for it”? I’m excited to get past this. The rest of my vaulting form is pretty good and I’m sure I’ll see a significant PR increase after I fix this problem. Thanks!

Hey! I'm happy it helped. Try dropping down a pole or 2 and some grip so the progression is easier. Slow progressions are the best progressions. Think of it like this, if you're tracing the outline of a picture on paper its easier to do it when you slow it down. Dropping grip, pole or/and run is like making you're vault easier so you can stay on the line. Eventually you'll be able to add speed back into it! If you still need help think about checking out my book over at Team-hoot.com its full of knowledge bombs

Coach, You are saying 1 o'clock from the shoulder through the arm to the pole? Or 1 o'clock from runway through whole body?
@TeamHootPoleVault
@TeamHootPoleVault 6 жыл бұрын
So put the clock on the runway. 6:00 would be the ground, 12: would be the ceiling. The clock never moves. So you want to shoot for getting that top arm in front of your head looking at the clock from the side view if you're on the right side of the pit

Question...I am right dominate everything and in pole vault I developed a habit in which I vault off my right foot when vaulting right handed. (Developed this because my right leg is much better at jumping than left which is weird for right dominate people) Should I either jump with my weaker left foot or vault left handed?
@TeamHootPoleVault
@TeamHootPoleVault 7 жыл бұрын
Id try both and see what feels better. I've had better luck having kids turn to lefties in your situation. But I've also done it the other way. Take a whole practice or 2 and try vaulting lefty and see how it works for you. If you want to stay righty, do a ton of skipping for height off your left side. Create a new habit!
@brianvasey723
@brianvasey723 7 жыл бұрын
So Shawn would this be 11 o'clock moving to 12 o'clock with a leftie?
@TeamHootPoleVault
@TeamHootPoleVault 7 жыл бұрын
Depends what side of the runway you're on. If you stay on the same side of the runway nothing changes. 1 o'clock is always 1 o'clock since the clock is position on the track where the vaulter is just the hands of the clock

Hi I'm in 8th grade and I just started doing pole vault. My very first time vaulting over a bar i got 6'6 but once i got to seven feet when i got in the air i would just come right back down and not even get past the bar, I dont know why. Any tips?

hey i watched your video on spikes but i have a problem. i have tried lj, pv, and tj spikes but the arches in all of them are too high. it feels like i am running with something in my shoe. i was wondering if i could use high jump spikes without the heel spikes and if that would help the problem? thanks!
@TeamHootPoleVault
@TeamHootPoleVault 7 жыл бұрын
Good question, i've never tried HJ spikes. The best rule of thumb is to use the spike that feels the best. Nikes hurt my feet so i always wore Adidas. Try it and see how it goes! Just remember you take-off forward in the pv vs the side like HJ

What do you mean by "1 o'clock turns into 12 o'clock?" Are you telling them to plant at 1:00 so they plant at 12:00. In that case, is your ultimate goal to plant directly above your head? I was just a bit confused.
@TeamHootPoleVault
@TeamHootPoleVault 7 жыл бұрын
you can never keep your hand at 1 since forces and gravity change that pretty fast once you hit the box and leave the ground. But planting tall at 1 make it easier to be taller when it does go to 12. vs if you plant at 12 you might not be as tall and get rocked back to 11. Does this make sense? The ultimate goal is to be as tall as you can at take off, arriving early (1) is always better than arriving late (11) which happens way to many times with HS kids.

my school doesn't have a coach for pole vault, so I am trying with the help of another vaulter to train the new vaulters ourselves...however I cant seem to convince our vaulters to drop their pole. rather, they run with the pole on the ground which sacrifices their momentum and speed. I have taught them several drills, but they still dont have the confidence. I tell them to drop early and they cant finish the run. how do I convince them to not run with the pole on the runway? is there some other way I should be doing this?
@TeamHootPoleVault
@TeamHootPoleVault 7 жыл бұрын
You're right in that it sacrifices momentum and speed but it might help them with their run and plant timing. I think you've done all you can in providing them the information or leading them to the water. Its up to them if the decide to drink it or not haha.
