This is a Motormouth couple car review of the Polestar 2 Dual Motor AWD premium electric sedan. Modern and minimalistic, the Polestar 2 AWD model!
This AWD sedan has a 300 kw dual motor with 408 horsepower and 487 lb-ft of torque. It gets up to 418 km/260 miles of range and goes 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds.
The Polestar 2 comes with plenty of standard features and is priced really well at $58,950 CAD/$53,300 USD which means it qualifies for the Federal EV rebate of $5,000 in Canada. Unfortunately, it no longer qualifies for a tax credit in the US.
The Polestar 2 comes standard with an 11.2” touchscreen with Google’s Android Automotive Services, a 12.3” digital driver display, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front seats, power driver and passenger seats, 8-speaker audio system, a foot activated tailgate, LED headlights with active high beam and LED taillights, 19” wheels and front and rear park assist. Our test model Polestar 2 has a few extras including the Plus Pack $5,700 CAD/$4,200 USD. That package includes features like a heat pump, the Harman Kardon sound system, panoramic sunroof, heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and a wireless charger. It also has the addition of the Nappa leather light grey interior for $5,000 CAD/$4,000 USD.
The Polestar 2 EV offers some great front row legroom, it has about the same room as the Model 3 but more than the BMW i4. It doesn’t have as much second row legroom as the i4 and Model 3, the Tesla offers the most. Overall cargo capacity, the Polestar 2 has 15.5 cubic feet or 439L of space, less than the i4 and Model 3, the Tesla has the most at 19.8 cubic feet or 561L.
With a DC fast charger, the Polestar 2 can charge from 10-80% within 35 minutes and with a Level 2 charger, 8 hours for a full charge. It can tow up to 2,000 pounds and Polestar offers a warranty of 4 years or 80,000 km/50,000 miles.

Polestar is a Swedish name that means North star. In English it may sound like something else but in Sweden/Swedish, it has no such connotation. The Polestar 2 originally is the Volvo Concept 40.2. It basically is a Volvo XC40 in a sedan body and was designed by Volvo. Volvo didn't use the body so Polestar did. Polestar is a modified, rebadged Volvo but a lot sportier. Almost everyone that works at Polestar used to work for Volvo or currently works with Volvo. You can see a lot of Volvo in the car, the seats, the vents in the back, the dividers in the trunk, the Thor's hammer lights, the paint colors. In the introduced by not on sale yet Polestar 3, you can see a lot of similarities and shared parts with the Volvo EX90. It's not that they are owned by the same company that makes them so similar. It's more that they are the same company but Polestar is like a sporty division of Volvo. Same thing in terms of where they are headquartered. All design, engineering, track and road and crash testing is out of Gothenburg. They start building them in factories in China, then expand to the USA, then will start manufacturing them in Europe around 2026/2027. They use all of the safety features of Volvo and are built in the same solid manner because essentially, they are built by Volvo. The Polestar 3 thankfully excised the center console so that whole area is open now.

Polestar is also own by a Chinese company(Geely) so that its Chinese name 極星 mean the same thing. (北極星=North pole star) which the North (北) part is usually omitted because there is no South Pole star so no need to mention the "North" part. So it is simply reduced to just Polestar without the North. It is considered a "Guiding Star" hence the name. The name would have zero connection to what English speaking person would have in their mind. (Pole dancing.)

My thoughts exactly, Zack, when I heard they were going with the "Polestar" name! I wish these car companies would just spec down the powerful dual motor models to make them simpler. No heated steering wheel, just good heater and cooler, knobs for heater controls (even if by wire). Even a single motor model with a smaller display but cheaper by $5K would be great. Regardarding federal rebates, I would tend to agree. Whether a $5K rebate really results in a $5K savings for the consumer depends on the demand and supply elasticities for these vehicles. If demand is strong, sellers can simply raise prices and recover a good portion of that $5K rebate. One could argue that incentives are helpful for both the buyer and the seller when the market is emergent and there are risky investments to be made by car companies, but we have now passed that point. Even if there will be a transition point, there is no going back to the days where combustion engines will be the main type of propulsion system. The rebate money could be better spent on building the charging infrastructure, or seeing if alternatives like hydrogen could be better for service vehicles like delivery trucks.

Perfect timing. Still waiting on our 23 Polestar 2 (LRSM, Midnight, no packages) to Vancouver. Still considering changing it to dual motor. A bonus is you can now add the software performance upgrade to the dual motor afterwards for $1200 CAD. As Andrea pointed out last P2 video, Canadian federal $5000 rebate applies to both single and dual motor. BC rebate applies to single motor only and is on a sliding scale based on income. A note for people ordering a new P2, dealers can and will charge a doc fee which is not mentioned Vancouver (GAIN) charges about $900.

The 5k fed and 4k prov (BC) rebate is necessary to help switch consumers over to zero emission EVs. This is what helped me make the switch. Otherwise I would still be polluting in my old ICE car. The faster we can get off fossil fuels the better. (Maybe the price levels should switch as expensive luxury should not qualify).

I don’t like rebates at all but if they remain, they should be capped at $50k to bring MSRPs down and only apply to North American built and sourced vehicles. I feel a lot better helping someone who can’t afford a BEV to purchase one than helping someone wealthy buy a luxury car. And one that doesn’t have materials from countries which don’t care about the environmental impact like China or Africa is even better.

My wife and I have a Polestar 2 dual motor, we got the Pilot pack instead of the Plus pack as we live in Phoenix so the heat pump/steering wheel are unnecessary and the glass roof kind of a drawback half the year. We love it! The car gets tons of looks and everyone asks first "what is that?!", then once I tell them the next thing they say is "that looks way better than any Tesla!". The cache will grow but we're rather glad we have something so unique. That center console does need updating for sure. They should do something similar to what Volvo did for the C40s center console, they have the same constraints with regards to the center tunnel anyway. However, I disagree with you guys on the software, we had no problem with it. Keep in mind that we're younger though, I forget AM radio even still exists until I come to your youtube channel ;P.

(I think Tesla was the among the first offenders to remove it from cars) if one lives in rural areas, AM radio is still quite popular. Much more impressed with the Ioniq 5 (I've put my deposit down on a AWD Preferred Ultimate...very quiet/smooth and quick, spacious, easy in and out, leather, huge panoramic roof, heads up display, heat pump, one pedal drive, etc., etc. not to mention, in my opinion, better finish and layout). AM radio - use TuneIn appI As for the single motor, it's still $3500 but I can see the value for most given the AWD and extra power benefits. I drive to Windsor and the distance is 380Km and those extra Km's made the difference to making it without stopping and topping up SOC. The dual motor and the loss of efficiency over the single is significant enough to add range anxiety. Saying that, winter use would require a stop The Polestar is the most "normal" looking EV interior - The google automotive OS is actually quite good and the simplicity is very obvious As for the SUV, both the Polestar 3 and 4 will be on different and more advanced platforms.

Regarding Zach's on-going issue with "no AM radio", it may be different in Canada, but here in Massachusetts on my Volvo I simply say, "Hey Google, play WBZ (or whatever) on Tune in radio" and it plays, same as any FM station. No phone connected or anything. How hard is that?

It definitely is inexcusable not to include AM radio when others do. It is a silly exclusion. Very interesting report on 4WD Polestar 2. It's a bargain considering other possibilities mentioned in the video (in Quebec they get an extra 7,000$ rebate over the 5,000$ paid by....Zack !!). Andrea said that dual motor is a 3,500$ option but Polestar website talks about 5,000$ !! So where did you get the 1,500$ rebate ? Beside the design of the center console, the problem with this car is the place where they build it. In China !!! By the way did you know that fabrication of each Polestar 2 generates 25 (metric) tons of CO2 ? It's huge !!! That is equivalent to run a 8,7l/100km gas car for 125,000 km.

And almost all of the consumer electronic products I buy, computers, stereos, televisions, you name it, are from Western companies but made in China. Polestar is a Western company owned by a Chinese company and it makes sense for now to make the cars in China. There are plans to make the next model, Polestar 3, in the USA and in a few years in Europe.

@@Motormouth... so you just admitted that having incentives did help keep down the prices. When you increase the incentives, you will see a price increase. That part is obvious I agree that if you make the incentive too generous, then it wouldn't bring down the price all that much, but that's a different argument altogether. Even then, it still gives automakers a significant push to keep the price under a certain amount. Incentives also help make "lower tier" Evs more competitive, which gives companies a reason to build them.

Performance: excellent. Range and recharge speed: good. UI: excellent. Interior packaging efficiency: poor. Value: as always with a Volvo product, this depends whether in your mind it competes with mainstream or luxury products. Materials, quality, and performance are luxury class...but standard equipment levels, dealer support, and brand cachet are low. In short, value is poor compared to Chevy or VW, but arguably good compared to, say, BMW or Audi. Still, competition is heating up -- see Hyundai offering Porsche-fast 800-volt charging in the Ioniq5. It seems like Polestar aims at a narrow segment that cares a great deal about performance and quality, has plenty of money, but doesn't care at all about badge snobbery and is willing to roll the dice on a new brand without a dealer network as such.
