A very interesting video, thank you. Your analysis certainly suggests that the standard heating system is highly efficient. Talking to Polestar recently about the possible upcoming heat pump, they hinted that they were finding during development testing that the benefits from fitting a heat pump were not as great as some people might expect, indeed were marginal under some conditions.

Thanks Andy, that's interesting to hear re Polestar and the heat pump. It does feel like their sealing is excellent and the interior loses very little hear once warmed up.

Nextmove did pretty extensive testing with ID.3 in cold weather, both while stationary (nine hours parked) and while driving (three 95 km laps), and their result was that the heat pump did not improve the energy consumption in any way; their ID.3 equipped with it actually had the higher average consumption. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJeQmp6wZdylotU

Could it make a difference where the heat pump was getting the ‘heat’ from? The 2021 Tesla Model 3 gets heat from the battery pack if it’s warm enough which lowers the energy use to heat the cabin.

Very useful video in that it showed me how much more energy you lose in the first minutes of heating up the cabin.

Interesting comparison, yep, on our XC40 costs 2 to 4 miles in range not preconditioning. But it depends a lot on outside air temperature and humidity, plus sunshine once on the move. Luckily we can start preconditioning from the app, either for a fixed hour of the day or by just hitting 'start' half an hour before departure.

Great, sounds similar. I can't wait for the Polestar app to be released!

Interesting. For some reason, I would have thought the heat-pump system would have been more efficient. Just goes to show. Last time I commented, I complained that you were repeating non-essential information, so this time I'll compliment you on your presentation style and clear language. Cheers.

A heat pump is more efficient by a factor of three, you can’t compare two totally different car this way it far to hit and miss plus, I’m sure the polestar is way better insulated,
@ShortCircuitPS2
@ShortCircuitPS2 3 жыл бұрын
Yes agreed, it wasn't really meant to be a scientific comparison. I mainly just wanted to see what would happen and focus mainly on the energy use on the Polestar 2.
@Xanthopteryx

@@wobby1516 In theory, a heat pump can be 1:5. But, then reality kicks in.... Humid air makes the evaporator to freeze and that needs to be thawed, and this uses energy (and the more ice there is on the evaporator, the less efficient it is). And then the colder it is, the less efficient it gets too. And you also have losses (vibrations and heat from the compressor and sound (yes, vibrations that is...), whereas a resistive heater has 100% efficiency.

Excellent video! I have a question though. I saw someone camped in the Polestar, and he was having trouble to keep the heater on through the night. He said the car heater would turn off after about one hour, and he smhas to get up to turn it on again. How did you get the heater to run continuously? Thank you. If this heater can work at night, I will try to use it to camp too.

You can have the leaf display battery percentage in the little display in the center of the instrument cluster. I believe there are som button close to the steering column you can use to choose modes for that display. At least this is possible in my wifes leaf. I see no reason why it shouldnt be in yours.

Hi, i think you should have calculated the leaf battery up to the same level as the polestar, Then i think it would have been a closer and more equal test. As the percentage between the cars will have an unfair bias towards the polestar because of the battery sizes.
@ShortCircuitPS2

Yes, that's all calculated in the spreadsheet at the end.

I recommend that you use leafspy to get how much energy you have used exactly. Also the leaf used both the resistive heater and health pump to fastly heat the car from a cold car. At 34k miles your battery has degraded to around 18 kWh

As an aside, can I safely drive my Polestar (or any EV) through a shallow ford? I used the drive my old IC engine cars through provided the water depth was below the exhaust pipe. Any thoughts on an EV??? Thanks in advance.

Does your leaf still have 22kWh usable? That would indicate no degradation Pre 2013 Leafs did not have a heat pump.

All cars are leaky otherwise you wouldn’t get fresh air drawn in. The air in the cabin has to be able to leave or else the pressure would increase to get fresh air in. As for your ears popping that happens to to air pressure change as your altitude alters and has nothing to do with how well sealed the car is. In fact, if the car was 100% sealed to the outside then your ears shouldn’t pop as the pressure would stay the same inside the car and not change with altitude. Note that even in a pressurised airplane your ears still pop as the plane climbs and descends.

Sorry, but it is painful to watch this type of comparison. You are taking false data, then extrapolating it to even more false conclusion. For the leaf, just scroll through menu and you will see percentage. It is shown in few places. Though it is known, that percentage drop at relatively low discharge can be way off in leaf. Also teslabjorn shown that on polestar 2 percentage sometimes is also showing not correct. 24kWh leaf, when new has 21.5kWh usable battery. I bet that yours is closer to 19.5-19kWh. Don't know about polestar 2, but Leaf actually use 2 to 3 times less than you calculated in these conditions.
