The 2020 Polestar 2 is Polestar's first full battery electric vehicle. It follows the (imaginatively named) Polestar 1 plug-in hybrid, but is a rather more accessible and practical saloon (or sedan, depending on where you live prefer).
The 2 costs around £46,000 in the UK, and its two motors give it a total of 402bhp - so it's able to take on fast versions of the Tesla Model 3. A 0-62mph time of just 4.7sec means it has acceleration to spare. And its range is a very competitive 292 miles.
We loved the Polestar 1, and there are similar nerdy, geeky bits in the Polestar 2's suspension as well. But how will it stack up against its 2020 EV competitors like the Tesla Model 3, or even Audi's e-tron? Join Autocar's Matt Saunders as he finds out.

@goodfella21f indeed. it gets barely more than a Standard range Model 3 (with very slightly increased acceleration). 470km WLTP. For comparison, Tesla Model 3 gets 620km WLTP. And the Tesla Model 3 is very aerodynamic so it tends become more efficient compared to other cars at higher speeds than usual test speeds.

Wrong specs : Polestar 2 WLTP range is 292miles on 19" wheels , with the performance 20" the range as per Polestar is 288 . It is visually well sorted, and give you the impression of solidity, i really like the matrix led headlights and the normal digital tacho behind the steering wheel, although i'm not sure about the price that seems to be quite steep considering that the model 3 has better range, performances, internal space for passenger and luggage, charging speed and the access to the tesla supercharger network that allows the model 3 to be the fastest EV for long trips and get pretty close to a classic car.

@5putput I'd like to see that if it's true. Even Porsches 270kw charging doesn't stay 270kw or anywhere near that till 80%. People have done tests such as Bjorn and the difference in miles added per minute (the real thing you as a driver should be concerned about) is miniscule between the model 3 charging at peak 250kw but tapering off vs the Taycan peaking at 270kw but charging 100-150kw for most of it. I get the SR+ with whishcolor for about 39.000 € and it has 254miles/409km of WLTP Range. And it reaches 400km in city/landroad. On my work way it will need 12kWh/100km. As far as most early Polestar videos show it seems that the Polestar 2 will need 22-25kWh in city/landroad. This would be really really really bad. The 2nd thing that's a no go for me is this middle console that makes it impossible to have some space for your legs and spread them a bit... it's the total opposite of a Model 3.

“if I set Pilot Assist it keeps itself within the lane, it regulates the distance from the car in front, I've got one hand in the wheel because thats the way it works. This isn’t a Tesla autopilot”. As a professional motoring journalist you should know that is exactly what Tesla autopilot does. Nothing more, nothing less. No wonder so many people believe the Tesla system does more than that when journalists make such ill researched and inaccurate comments. For me such poor reporting mars what otherwise really is an excellent and informative report, because I now have to worry what other bits of info have you got wrong? @garyco766
@garyco766 4 жыл бұрын
Sounds about right. Range claims aren't meant for 70mph, more like 60mph or below. At 70+ you can expect range to decrease proportionate to speed (similar to a gas car). Inclement weather (wind, rain, snow, cold) will further decrease range.

@@iainmackie7064 The answer to that question is easy. During the reveal of this car on stage, the head of Polestar said that this car was made to be a direct competitor to the Tesla Model 3. That is why I am here looking at it. That is why every reviewer is comparing it to the Model 3. One of the prime factors in any EV is it's range, so it had better be close. To be fair, some tester needs to run the same test, under the same conditions, to see how it compares, in the real world.

I thought it was a good 'introduction' review - will be interesting to see a back to back test between this and a Tesla Performance - and see how Plugsurfing compares to the Tesla Supercharger network. Looks wise this reminds me a bit of a Saab 9-3, which is a good thing. In respect of weight, I thought Polestar were claiming to have better protection than the Tesla 3(?) but of course, maybe Tesla will view it as being overdone in the Polestar? Personally I think this is a great effort by Polestar and whichever one you ultimately go for - this is a genuine rival to the Tesla.

Honest question, there are many comments based on quality, so what is peoples perception of 'quality' in their cars, is it superficial items such as perfectly aligned panels, interior buttons & perfect paint or vertical integration with designed in-house ultra efficient motors, full self drive hardware/software, over-the-air updates and a charging network.

This car is made in China by Geelee, owned by members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) politburo members, over 90 of which are billionaires. The company is most famous for a complete ripoff of the BMW X5 - when brought to task Chinese courts denied any resemblance to the BMW. There is no separation of party, state military, and industry in China. It's heavier, slower, doesn't handle as well, stereo not as good, no over-the-air updates, less range and no access to the worlds largest and fastest charging network, but other than that it's great because it has an android infotainment system? Everyone says this but they are test cycles. There are 3 main cycles NEDC(China) WLTP(EU) EPA(US). Each tests different things. All test both city and motorway but EPA focuses on Motorway the most and NEDC the least. If you do all motorway driving you will not reach the cycles range as the whole point is it is a mix of driving people would do. If you drive on 30mph roads you will get over the WLTP Range in nearly all conditions.

I really hate it when people use the word “reliability” for build quality or some other metric. Being reliable means it’s dependable and it is there for you. Like I’ve said before in other yt videos, an excessive panel gap, has nothing to do with reliability. It might be visually imperfect, but that won’t stop you from getting to work. Call me a fan boy, I don’t care. My Tesla model X has 98K miles on it and I’ve replaced (after warranty @50k) a 12v battery ($275 including labor @$195/hr and tax) and a window regulator ($217 labor and tax) tires and alignment. That’s it. Nada. No brakes, no fluids belts oil changes spark plugs (ice cars) nada. It has been fairly maint free. I’ve had BMWs, and multiple Porsche’s with crap that failed , that kept me constantly at the dealerships and no car. My 2014 Cayenne diesel (brand new) XMSN took a dump @118K miles and left me stranded in Palm Springs and I live in LA. The dealership had my car for about two weeks. Now that is where you can say it’s not reliable. I’ve had many American (Saturn 221k miles) and Japanese (Honda 243K miles) and Korean (Hyundai 190K mikes) cars with over 200K miles that were reliable.

The trouble with the Polestar is the parts are coming from so many different places where as Elon Musk actually has everything in house to build his cars , also Musk knows the competition is nipping at his heals , he knows that other companies can build good electric cars but at what price , Musk knows that in order to dominate the electric car market he must build the best quality car for the lowest price .

Also, the Polestar 2 has longer range than the Tesla model 3 standard range and similar range compared to the Tesla model 3 Performance, so I don't really know what you are talking about.

Take away one of the motors. Aero design a bit more (lower and sculpt the body) Remove 20% of the batteries and the weight saved would build in efficiencies where the car would probably still do near 5sec, 0 to 60mph. Oh and consult the styling department before releasing the next Volvo.

Would you buy a conventional car with a 4 gallon fuel tank? Probably not, so unless you only commute short distances, it's not a viable purchase. That's before you hear the eye watering price! It'll do well in Central London, where your parking place often costs more than your car.

If gasoline has the same efficiency as electric cars, no one would need more than 5 gallons of gas. But gasoline engines aren’t as efficient so electric cars can make do with far less energy.

Wow what sort of car do you have that does 0-60 in 4.5 seconds yet gets 75 mpg (your 4 gallon tank). Why do you need a bigger tank unless you are that driver that drives for 5 hours with no break (300 miles). If so perhaps you need a crashworthy car in which you will survive when you doze off.
