Polestar 3 VS Volvo EX90 | Which Is Better?

Definitely the Polestar 3. I do like to EX90 a lot, but I prefer more sportier cars in the SUV segment. I currently drive an XC60 T8 Recharge, and I think the Polestar 3 is a perfect next step 😎

I’ve had 4 XC90s in a row… two gen 1 and two gen 2… so it’s obvious that I like the car. Essentially with the XC90 we have safety, sturdiness, reliability and a lot of flexibility. Wether the mission is to bring a bed frame from Ikea or to drive my sons and their buddies to a concert, the XC90 does it well. I also don’t have to worry about potholes and the occasional visit to countryside roads. I’ve ordered the EX90 the day after the presentation. Long wait ahead.

I prefer Polestar. But then, I also prefer the Polestar 2 over the 3 because it is smaller (and less expensive) while still being practical (for example with the hatch back) and large enough for our taste and use. And what a great drive it is over a mountain pass - I just love it 😍

I bought the Volvo EX90 during the introduction. On one screen I was looking at the presentation online and on the other I was mailing my dealer the specs. The minute I saw it I was convinced. What a beautiful boxy SUV. Very much like a Range Rover indeed. I ordered the 517 HP Performance with Tailored Wool and all the options that where possible. I’m only trying to decide for the exterior color as I can still change that. It’s between Platinum Grey (I ordered that one) and Denim Blue (I love that one but everyone is telling me it will look dull on this car). I don’t think I will like the feel of the “vegan leather” so that’s why I ordered tailored wool. I already wanted to try that.

I prefer the looks of the Volvo EX90, but also the rear door access in the P3 looks compromised because of the low door height !

I'm ordering a P3. I was looking at the Porsche Taycan CT, but at same equipment we are talking about 30k+ difference... welcome trade-offs.... Then Volvo or P3?, we are three at home, no need for 7 seats... Higher car means larger front section. At higher speeds in highway it means more resistance and more consumption (they have the same underpinnings so the only difference is the front section and drag coefficient). The good part of pre-ordering is that if I decide that this is not what I want when I test drive it, then I can withdraw my reservation and wait for the Macan EV.

I actually prefer the Volvo look, and it’ll be more practical too being a 7-seater! In UK I think PS3 should come through about £15k cheaper, which is a fair amount of cash… that’ll sway many buyers’ decisions. If you can afford either, then it’s down to personal preference. Either way, two great new EVs, so you’re onto a winner with your order there Kris.

Will you talk about the upcoming NIO EL7? Its actually better equipped than both of these and delivers 655hp /0-100 in 3.8s:) ( 658l trunk before seats are down..The equipment is second to none. I like these two, but they are to high priced imho

Thank you for the comparison . As a 3rd row is not possible for the Polestar 3, it may turn away some shoppers. However, while I have no interest in the 3rd row in the EX90, I want the larger and taller rear compartment. Over the next 4 years I will be spending more time in the Netherlands and less in California. I was shocked to see the taxing structure for vehicles (petrol, hybrid, and EV). The tax on passenger vehicles - belastingdienst (BPM) makes owning a high performance petrol passenger vehicle very expensive. A Porsche Cayenne Turbo for example would have a BPM expense of $45K and VAT expense of approx. $22K. Seems like an EV is the only way to go.

Do not forget the road tax every 3 months… it is also based on how much the car is polluting and the weight of the car. Last the insurance isn’t the cheapest either.

They may be on the same platform, but the P3 is definitely smaller than the EX90. It's closer in size to an XC60 because of the no third row. I would definitely prefer the P3, and actually the P4 when it comes out. That will be basically a coupe version of the P3.

I’m genuinely curious how both models can charge at a claimed 250kw. Since they use a 400v architecture, they’d need to be charging at 625 amps (or slightly higher if the pack voltage at a low state of charge is lower than 400v). Are there many fast chargers that output that much amperage?

Very good question , nobody seems to know yet. Is it possible that they use a DC-DC to trick the charger to always run at 500V then it’s possible but slightly inefficient. CCS2 does not allow more than 500A. E-GMP Kia/Hyundai platform does a similar thing to this when charging at a 500V charger and locks voltage at 455 roughly.

I love the polestar, but I wish the polestar 3 performance had more power. They advertise it has a fast performance car, which it is imo, but in comparison to the competition it could be better. Honestly idk if I would bother spending more money for the performance pack and if I would, it wouldn’t be for the power upgrade but for the way the wheel looks and the brembo breaks.

Volvo teased a slightly smaller model ... maybe the 'new' EX-60 at the very end of the 09/11/2022 launch of the EX90. That is what I want to see. I don't need the EX90 size. I drive a 2021 XC40 P8 Recharge (Twin Pro - though it is not referred to here in the US that way for 2021) and would like something just a bit bigger and maybe built better as a true Electric vehicle (less drag coefficient). Do not get me wrong - if Volvo doesn't release anything in the mid-size SUV class I will be keeping my XC40 P8 Recharge model until the battery dies (10 - 12 - 15 years or uh oh 4-6-8 years - scary to some extent, how long will the battery packs last though I believe Volvo will stand by its products). If I was to pick between Polestar 3 and EX90 - for me it is an EX90 - just not a 'sports' car type person and the swooping 'coupe' back on a SUV doesn't look good to me. My spouse would love that swooping back though so different strokes for different folks as in everything. Nice work on covering the differences as always Kris.

A P3 with adjustable rear seats. "Too much" leg room and too small trunk. Don't need a 3rd row and don't need a Lidar, the P3 therefore makes more sense to me. Ohh, while similar a think the Volvo interior looks a bit better. Both are very nice compared to everyone else. Only the Q8 matches these.

I think it comes down to practicality. If you have kids and a dog like I do then the P3 is too small.

I manage kids and a border collie with my polestar2 that I drive since dec 2024. In the market for something bigger though. P3 is an option. I love the software and design signature. Zeekr01 or Fisker Ocean are other options. Would like to profit from 800v technology as well when I renew… choices, choices of luxury

Polestar 3. I have test drived both cars in Gothenburg. Both cars was Pre Production cars tho. But still the car is the same. Polestar was a better drive and much more high luxury feeling and better technology.

One is smart looking sport crossover, and the second is a family haulier. One is screaming I am fast and agile, second 'your five kids are safe here'. there is no question about which is better, they have different target groups. you also cannot compare pricing. P3 will compete with EX60 and THEN it will be premium compared to that model.

They are really quite different, so it is some kind of unfair to ask, which one someone prefers. I personally do not like the look of SUVs and do not need the improved practicality. Posestar 3 is for me is enough. As far as one can say, that this dream car is enough 😁. The Polestar 3 is my dream car but I guess I will keep my current dream car: my Polestar 2. That is more than enough and a pleasure to drive it. I expect the Polestar 3 ro be even better.

PS3 imho not as sophisticated in design than ex90. The rear 3/4 on PS3 with the kick up is too similar in design language than many Japanese etc sporty designs.

actually, the height of the P3 is more like the Macan and the Volvo Cross Country wagon ... The Cayenne is boxier and higher by about 2.5 inches (7-8 cm)... At least one other KZbin reviewer has stated that the P3 is more like a lifted wagon than an SUV. The larger the vehicle (and larger the SUV), the uglier it gets by default. I think that the exterior of the P3 is fabulous, just as the exterior of the EX90 is ugly (like the XC90 is ugly to me).

I WAS initially super excited when I first heard about the EX90. I've been waiting for this to come out for the last four years. But why oh why did they try to mimic Tesla? I'm sorry to all that love it, but I absolutely, unequivocably, hate that huge screen. I hate that little screen behind the steering wheel too. They are both ugly. They are both tacky. There is absolutely ZERO style in this "look". Honestly, It looks like they are just bolted onto the dash. And that just sends my "dust-tingling sense" into overdrive! And the no leather option for the Volvo? Come on @Volvo, your seats are ONE of the things you are known for.
