Police personnel were deployed outside the Shillong Press Club (SPC) on Thursday following a protest by Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) members against a certain organisation that was reportedly scheduled to address a press conference advocating a ban on beef cow slaughter and beef consumption in the state.
In a strong presumptive statement, the HYC declared its opposition to any move by the organisation to impose a ban on beef.
HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem stated that the group was closely monitoring the activities of the said organisation, claiming that the same group went to Arunachal Pradesh to rally against consumption of beef and banning cow slaughter.
He said that the group was denied permission by the Nagaland government to hold a similar rally, and today they were planning to hold a press conference to announce a date for taking out a rally in Shillong.
Stating that the majority of the people in the state do not regard cows and dogs as mothers and sisters, Synrem warned the group of dictating terms in Meghalaya.
The HYC warned that if the Meghalaya government permits any form of rally on the matter, the HYC would hold a counter-protest by organising a "beef festival" on the same day, bringing it to the streets of Shillong.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the organisation at the centre of the controversy did not turn up for the press conference, leaving the scene with only the HYC protesters and police officers.
