@@BUCKINATORCHRIS this is NOT what the Catholic Church teaches. While I honestly hope that everyone will join the Church, her teaching that there is no salvation outside the Church does not mean non Catholics cannot be saved. It means that God, through the Catholic Church, offers salvation. Another way of saying this is that Salvation would not be possible if not for the existence of the Church. Jesus’s death and resurrection opened for us the gates of Heaven and his Church offers the grace of Salvation. She offers it to all who want to do the Will of the Father.

My husband was a cop for 25 years, in a big city, never fired his gun and didn't beat anyone up. He was appalled by many things he saw on TV and felt sorry for some younger cops who didn't know how to stop a senior cop but probably wish they did now. If we in any job don't police ourselves, don't pull someone aside before things escalate, don't stop abuse that will harm others, the structure will never be strong. It will never happen across the board, but your advice was spot on

This resonated with me today. My school has a massive issue with students, and we were up for an award for the best schools in the state. In an interview, I openly stated that there were these issues at our school, and put it out of the running for the award. Very excellent video, Father. One thing you didn't talk about explicitly, but I think is a large part of both issues, is the role that the "general public" plays. One big thing I saw in The Church was clericalism, where the priests' word was never to be questioned. I'm sure this was encouraged by many priests, but it is an attitude that comes from the laity. Many people conflated their parish priest with the Truths that the priest taught. And for police, this is expressed as a sort of hero worship. The "thin blue line", as they say. This equates the police with the law they are supposed to be upholding. I've seen this in a the attitudes of lot of people who shouldn't have been allowed on the force ("How dare you question an officer of the law?"). And the best LEOs I know absolutely detest being referred to as "heroes". Both of these attitudes are rooted in people being taught that they shouldn't question authority. Parents need to think about this when they tell their kids things like "because I said so". We've tried to raise all six of our kids with the idea that they deserve an explanation for why rules exist. This has certainly resulted in more work for us as parents, but I feel confident that we are raising the sort of people who will stand up for what is right in the face of injustice. (Indeed, we've already had our fair share of meetings with school officials who aren't so pleased with our parenting strategy. 😁)

I was thinking this too, but it is the same analogy, Japanese culture is that people take it home so even the bad apples wouldn’t litter cause they would be shunned. So culture is incredibly important in shaping human behaviour.

On social sin, I'd like to mention another big issue (the 'elephant in the room') which is pornography. Research links it to other grave social evils like abuse and human trafficking. Especially with open internet pornography, so much material now normalizes or desensitizes us to sexual abuse, infidelity, and violence from a young age. Even good "normal" people become psychologically affected. I think we need to take this social ill more seriously, but also find just and merciful rehab solutions for all victims, both the used and even the users! (PS. Fr. Casey also made a great video on the horrors of porn)

Father Casey thank you for your bravery to address this and your prudence in how you addressing it. I would like to request a similar video on addressing what's the fear? Why limiting report only on sexual assault against minor? As if there's no other type of power abuses. Why people associated a bad member as the institution itself? This caused people afraid in addressing it because they believe falsely that they have no authority to report abuse and afraid it could kill the Church. This is false because the Church has been wounded countless time (Arianism, Iconoclasm, etc). She is the eternal Phoenix that will rises from her ashes. We shouldn't be afraid because she can't be killed. We also shouldn't confused bad members as if they're the Church herself. Exposing bad members are not sin but rather moral obligation. The question then why the hierarchs afraid and why the laity afraid. I believe unless we go down to the root on why people avoiding conflict it would be hard to address the conflict itself. IMO it's not faithful to remain silent it's actually faithless to believe the Church couldn't survive another scandal. Abraham had faith that Isaac would be resurrected. May we all have Abraham's faith to do what must be done and God will resurrected the Church. God bless your ministry.

I work for a company that had a legal issue surrounding ITAR before I joined. There were clear signs, looking back as an outsider that it was knowing but people assumed the entire industry was doing it. Worse some of ownership and much of the leadership team repeatedly tried to dismiss it even years after they were caught and it had nearly killed the company. But some of the junior leadership, and myself who had just joined, pushed for more comprehensive and intelligent changes. We're now one of the most sophisticated companies when it comes to this stuff and often are able to correct customers and help them avoid making mistakes out of honest misunderstanding. And growing up around cops (dad was a prosecutor) I can't say if the same would apply. I would disagree that it's only a few bad apples, I think it's far more fundamental, but empowering people who hate corruption is a great way to make changes regardless.

The thing that made me so outraged was not only the actual abuse but that the leaders quietly reassigned the perpetrators. When I hear about bad apples in Protestantism I can honestly and accurately say "that's not MY Church" the disunity that Catholic defenders criticize in Protestantism actually serves as a quarantine. Jim Baker, Jimmy Swaggart, and all the others were not ministers of my Church. Even one case of I have recently heard of that I did listen to, I can disown and say that although he said much that was good, he never had authority over me. To compare it to the police, a big city police department with leaders who are supporting silence about misconduct does not mean that the police in some small rural town are corrupt. But when the FBI targets a former President of the United States because the other party is now in office then the Federal Government has major corruption problems and we need some major reform.

Hey Father Casey I’m a Maronite Catholic and I serve as an acolyte in my local Maronite Parish, and in the Maronite Church we allow Married men to become priests, and 90% of the priests in Lebanon where my family is from are all married. It is very rare you find a priest in Lebanon who is celibate. I think the Catholic Church should allow at-least the Parish priests those of which whom are not friars or religious order to be able to get married before or after ordination. Under the condition that those whom choose to marry before or after ordination cannot advance to be bishops or cardinals. Coming from my Heritage and traditions it has caused me to have a different view on celibacy that of those of which are of the East. I believe if the church wants to eliminate Pedophiles from the Priesthood, and stop the sexual abuse crisis, we need to strengthen the testing on seminarians and allow priests to be able to Marry before or after ordination, with the condition they don’t advance to any religious order or bishop or cardinal

Their arrogance won’t allow it, and sheepeople blindly follow any thing their told. Plus they hold most all the cards in the deck. You can never ever trust a single word that come out of their mouth and ALWAYS film your interactions. Most times that still won’t be enough but it does give you a fighting chance. The Catholic Church is one entity, people not only have to deal with corrupt and often violent police. The teachings in most Catholic schools these days not teach religion period. Lack of faith. Lack of teaching modesty and chastity to children. Humanity is in dire need of Devine intervention. All is the Father's hand. 🙏🏼

I went to Catholic schools in the 70's and 80's. Those were problems back then already. Humility is a big one that should have been taught too, rather than how to be competitive in sports.

My distrust in police is that they don’t accept that they have bad people in their ranks and protect them. Mostly they are good, but how would I know which ones are indeed good. I agree, this is just like the Catholic Church.

One issue that I see is the general misconception of Karma. Where one convinced themselves that by doing enough good they deserve some leeway to to bad. Prevalent in American society, is the economic view of morality. Thinking they are good for heaven if their moral books are balance, and perhaps show a net profit of goodness.

With respect to your holy office, there are still abusers active in the church. Our own Pope just pardoned a rapist. The church has been forced to hand over records that they have denied having. They did not do so voluntarily. I hope what you say is true somewhere but it is not in the current Bishops and Cardinals and sadly our current Pope. I do agree with your description of social sin but I think it is still strong in the hierarchy of the church and the Vatican.

Can someone explain to me the whole faith & works thing for salvation like I was five? I'm really really confused on this theme tbh.
@adorablebelle
@adorablebelle Жыл бұрын
True faith leads to repentance, which leads to good works. Ephesians 2:10 says we were made for “good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” Multiple portions of the gospels say that attachment to evil deeds causes us to choose darkness (John 3:19), and that “faith without works is dead.” (James) Salvation is through Christ alone, and Catholics believe this. But if our faith does not move us to good actions, there is a disconnect. In that sense “faith” vs “works” is somewhat of a false dichotomy: when you have true faith, you also have good works. I hope this helps!

@@pasalasaga Faith is something that involves all life. So if your faith is real, your behaviour will be affected too, it's inevitable. If your behaviour doesn't reflect your faith then your faith is not real. So it can't save you. So works are not what's saving you, they're just the fruits and evidence of your (real) faith.

this is an issue as old an humanity. i remember a story about a fox. where in the guise of a cleric he assaulted a rabbit and nearly killed him, a witness raised charges against the fox to the king pointing the rabbits injury as evidence: "A pious fit inspired the fox to teach morality assume the chaplain's character and read the litergy he soon relapsed from sanctity and tried another plan detaining Lampey in his claws, he pinched the honest man while walking past a psalm i heard afar begin and end immediately which was peculiar as i came up the fox did grip the poor, unhappy hare and lampey would have lost his life if i had not been there behold the pious fellow's wounds, in truth and verity" though the badger (usually depicted as a monk) makes excuses for the fox and vouches for his character: "and then my king, about the hare, what balderdash! i ask may not a pupil be chastised if he neglect his task? if boys were not corrected, how would order be maintained" ... "since which his friends declare he can't be recognized, eats once a day in monkish style with melancholy cowl, wears hairy shirts and quite abstains alike from flesh and fowl, I had this from a visitor who saw him yesterday, Malepartus his fine residence is going to decay, he is very thin and wan and pale through thirst and want of food, through abstinence from everything that's nourishing and good regardless of your virulence, loud complaints and blame he will conduct his case himself and put you all to shame." but no sooner another plaintiff showed dragging the body of a killed hen, the rooster telling how the fox killed her: "now listen to my history, far worse i shall reveal, he feigned himself a monk and brought a letter under seal,... the fox announced he embraced monastic discipline to expiate by penance a long career of sin... with gladsome heart i told my chicks of all the fox had said that no grim peril now remained to cause us any dread i walked with them beyond the walls, we felt no more afraid but sad the end, the dastard lay concealed in ambuscade devoured the finest of my sons for his first sacrifice nor did, when he succeeded once, one villainy suffice" this is not a one time thing. the officers charged with the killing had a history. get the foxes out before they kill!

When we are forced by the government to pay taxes, the choice from the individual is actually completely removed on how their hard earned money is spent. This gives people a buyout "i paid my taxes, it's not my problem now", removing all choice from the equation except moving to a different area. I don't think moving away really changes any issues of the place you fled from, which should be the #1 goal

Actually individuals in American at least do have a say in how the tax money is spent. Call your representatives, vote for people that will use taxes how you want them to be used, there are ways to influence tax expenditures.

@@Executioner9000 the representatives that can ignore our requests? the sheriff that will give police officers that committed crimes paid leave? call those people? your choices will be at the forefront of your mind every day if you have to pay for it directly, not forced upon you and forgotten about until election day. you vote every day in the free market, and that means you have more votes and more choice for your life, and you don't have to force that on anybody else like the gov does.

Any interaction with law enforcement increases them to arrest hurt or kill you for merely existing. We didn’t even have police terribly long ago. We may need them but we may need them in a much different facet than their current iteration. Cops are not law abiding, abuse their spouses and family in far too many instances and lead to such an unbelievable ego. Police are often worse than the symptom of the crime occurring and we applaud them for it.

Well, really all sin is social sin. I doubt the usefulness of characterizing some sins as especially social, as if agency is somehow conferred from the sinner to society. Otherwise, I agree that in most cases quality is more necessary than quantity. To a point.
