Hi Richard, thanks SO much for your response to my question, unfortunately I failed at the very first hurdle. I produced a good report (the assessment centre's adjudicators words) however, as i had written quickly I was marked down on my spelling and grammar. This has taken me aback, I knew my writing (of course) had to be more than legible, for obvious reasons. I wasn't aware the standard had to be degree level. I had prepped tirelessly (two months) for the 'interview' and had prepared an answer for the below question that was similar to yours. Yet, I was unable to move onto the next stage (the interview). I am writing today to firstly thank you Richard for all you do to help us candidates to pass and to advise other potential candidates to be prepared that, under timed conditions the report should contain all the relevant information AND be of a very high standard of english (in my experience). If the right circumstances prevail in 6 months I may try again, in the meantime due to your fantastic advice I felt extremely confident entering the process, for that I am very grateful. Best Regards. Debi

This video is so precise for preparation to undertake a confident Police enrolment interview. I enjoyed the points elaborated about: decision making, communication skills, setting up operational plan, appropriate approach to dire situations, meeting expected outcomes by prioritizing objectives, meticulous & methodical operating procedures, organizational policies, adherence to safety policies , prioritizing & planning tasks according to reasonable time frame, quick performance, above the line performance, identifying problems, problem solving skills, knowledge of the job to be accomplished, team cohesion, adaptability to changing situations, appreciation of other public service organizations' contributions and working collectively as a team, knowledge of Police Force values , protection of the community physically & psychologically from criminals & bullies, being visual to the community & providing satisfactory services through daily challenging situations. That's very enlightening. I would appreciate more videos on Police Force interviews, cognition, puzzles, maths & quiz. Thank you , Saver Mwene

Hi I have a Day 1 assessment for a Detective position for the MET. I believe its similar to the MET Police Day 1 assessment but I'm not sure? I did the MET Day 1 Assessment several years ago, I'd prepped on the Written side of the tests by purchasing a book that ran through loads of sample tests but unfortunately it had nothing about the roleplay side of things. Looking back I can see how I dropped loads of marks. In one of the sessions I was pretty much openly saying to the person that we couldn't help them as we were over stretched and I was of the impression he was a time waster. Not to mention I didn't do basic things like introducing myself and shaking their hand etc. I ended up failing the Day 1 Assessment by 1%, which was really gutting and was offered a position of a Community Support Officer (which I declined). Also when I did it there was no competency based interview so, thats another thing to gen up on!

Hi I have bought your books - which are great, as I am applying for West Yorkshire in a couple of weeks. I have one question; I thought the competency questions were based upon the forces competencies? So, West Yorkshire's' are: Effective Communication Community & Customer Focus Resilience Personal Responsibility Problem Solving Teamwork Respect for Diversity I thought that I had to learn these inside out, not the competencies you have just listed 3.50secs into your video?! HELP!!!!! X
@CareerVidz8 жыл бұрын
+lauren munday Hi Lauren, the police core competencies have recently changed to be the ones I have stipulated in the video. All of our books have now been updated to include the new competencies. However, some forces may still be using the old ones. My advice would be to contact the recruitment section of the police force you are applying to join to ascertain which set of competencies you will be assessed against. You can then prepare accordingly. I hope that helps :)

Hi I am going to the assessment centre next month. I'm expecting to be asked questions such as 'can you describe a time you experienced racism and what did you do?' Where they will be expecting answers including the core competencies.. I know it's likely there will be lots more questions about describing situations I have handled etc .. But the problem is I am 18 and have never actually worked a proper job. I'm very capable and know I would be able to handle the stresses and difficulties of being a police constable but I don't know how to convey that to the interviewer when I have very little experience in a workplace and can't think of specific times I've been using the core competencies. Have you any tips? Should I make up scenarios? I don't want to answer by saying I can't think of a time ... Etc.
@CareerVidz8 жыл бұрын
+Laurie Briggs Hi Laurie - my advice would be to not make up situations. If you have no prior experience of dealing with these situations, the best option would be to state what you would do in that situation, if it was to arise. You would not score high marks by answering the questions generically, but unless you have been in these types of situations, it will be difficult to answer them in a specific manner.

I too have just got my results back from my day 1, I passed! I've got my day 2 in the next 3 weeks. The CKP can either be done by attending a college that offers the course (someone i know who has now started training in surrey police as a regular did this), however I'm doing the CKP via the online route, an online course whereby you complete all the assessments they email you, then you can book your final test once you've emailed them back over to them and they give you the go ahead. I'm also currently a serving special so I got a £100 discount on the CKP.

Hi, to be honest, if you have not had any experience of this area yet, I would recommend some form of voluntary role. You don't need to carry out volunteer work for a long period of time, it might just be for a few days', but this would give you some invaluable experience. An example of voluntary work might be working in a local charity shop.

Hi Sue, I've had a quick look for you and I feel the competencies for this role are based on a Middle Manager role. +Chelonia Mydas You can use examples of previous work as a Team Leader. However, you would need to try and say how those skills have prepared you for the role as a police officer, and how you think that will help you in the job position.

Some of the answers you could give would be well over 5 minutes if they were highly detailed. I feel that you would lose marks and have to reassure them that you know each of the competencies because by the time you explain how you demonstrated each one in a real situation, that could be 10 mins? Would most of the difficulty therefore be in structure?

Hi Richard, thank you for your video, it has helped me formulate my competency responses. How come the BTP only ask questions based on 4 competencies and not the full 6?? thanks again Jorden
@CareerVidz8 жыл бұрын
Hello Jorden, Thank you for your message. This is so that you are able to spend longer on each question, and therefore provide more in-depth answers. Instead of 6 mediocre responses, you'll be able to provide 4 comprehensive answers. Of course, if you are able to get the other 2 competencies within your answers - then great! The more detail you provide, the more chance you have of passing! I hope this helps :)

Hi Richard, thanks for loading this video. I have found it most useful along with your books. I have used this and all your information available to prepare for my assessment day on 19th dec 2016. I have one question I am struggling with and are hoping you can help? During my special interview I am sure they will ask if i intend on remaining a special. I am not sure exactly how to answer this question? Please can you help?
@CareerVidz8 жыл бұрын
Hello Debi, Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you have found my videos and products useful! Good luck with your assessment today - let me know how you get on! If this question does arise, you should consider the following: Give reasons as to why you want to become a police special. So protecting the public, making a positive difference to the community, the challenges that come with the job role etc. You do not have to shy away from the fact that you want to progress in your career. You could say something along the lines of: "I am fully aware that this job position is an invaluable stepping stone which can lead to many job opportunities within the police service. I intend on making the most out of being a police special. I wish to utilise my existing skills, and learn everything I need to know to become a competent and successful police officer. My aim is to make the most out of my career as a police officer, and will appreciate every chance I have to make my dream a reality"For more help regarding police special interview questions and answers, please check out the following link - www.how2become.com/careers/police-special-constable-interview/

@CareerVidz6 жыл бұрын
Hi Chloe, we recommend you have some experience to demonstrate you have these skills. You could opt to do some charity work at a local charity shop or some other form of voluntary work (a few hours a week) to gain some customer service experience. I hope this helps, Richard

@CareerVidz8 жыл бұрын
Hello Tim, Thanks for the comment! From my understanding, I believe the interview would be of a very similar format to an external interview. Of course the questions may vary, but they will essentially be assessing the same core competencies. I hope this helps!

@CareerVidz7 жыл бұрын
Hello Simon, Chances are you will be asked different questions. However, some constabularies will use similar questions to see whether your answers match up. Of course, you could use your example from the application form, but I would elaborate on this, or maybe include another example to strengthen your response!

What if you do not have a lot of experience? And what if you cant remember a specific situation in your life during the interview?
@CareerVidz6 жыл бұрын
Hi Fred, thanks for commenting on my Police Officer Competency Video. My advice is that you will need some experience in each area. I would try and find a situation where you can gain the experience before going to the interview. In my opinion, a candidate's chances of passing the police officer interview increase if they can give specific examples of a situation that had been in, based on the assessable competencies. I hope that helps. Cheers, Richard

It doesn't really help, I'm sure I can dig into my past and find something. Not sure how an 18 year old can get a job with the Police Department.
@CareerVidz6 жыл бұрын
Getting experience is relatively easy if you want to. You could do some community work, or volunteer... that way, you would get experience in customer service, community awareness and confidence.
@CamtheMac6 жыл бұрын
Well In that case I do have experience. I was in the USMC, I have been a full time student for about 2 years. I have worked in thrifts stores, grocery stores, healthcare insurance, and at this moment in process of working at a plant that builds AC units. I interpret what you are saying as being a "Larger than Life" individual. I view these experiences as normal everyday living. How can I relate it to being a cop? I never got in a fist fight or witnessed a fist fight in these places. I have seen people in need who needed my help and I helped them. Can these types of experiences be "acceptable". Thanks for the help!
@CareerVidz6 жыл бұрын
Well done Fred! In that case, It looks like you do have plenty of experience, I think the following book will help you to structure your experience against the assessable core competencies: www.how2become.com/careers/police-officer-2/
