A playthrough of Sierra's 1995 FMV adventure/simulation game for PCs running Windows 3.1 and 95, Police Quest: SWAT.
This video shows the introductory sections, a small-arms training drill, and the three primary missions.
I didn't include every variation of each of the missions since the game kept crashing on me (you can see evidence of this at the end - I really came to hate that screen!), but I do show the "most" successful path through each of them.
The Police Quest series is known for how well it combined graphic-adventure style puzzles with strict attention to police procedural detail. They were always very difficult compared to the other Quest series, but their realism, attention to detail, and insane plot-lines made them a real treat to play.
Check out the card links for PQ 1-4!
Police Quest: SWAT is the fifth game in the series - even though the game isn't explicitly labelled as PQ5, many references in the game files do refer to it as such, and it is the second game (following Police Quest IV: Open Season) to have Darryl Gates on-board as a director and consultant. Unfortunately, PQ4 was a notable quality dip for the series, but it at least still managed to keep the basic mechanics intact that the series was known for (though it did up the violence quotient significantly - you kill a transvestite with a make-shift flamethrower in that one, for God's sake!).
Police Quest: SWAT is a complete departure from the series as we had always known it. In fact, outside of the game's title and the fact that they everyone calls you "Pup" (remember back in PQ1 when you get called Officer Pup by someone you're arresting?), the only thing that SWAT maintains of its origins is the steadfast adherence to following rules. There is no plot to speak of (you're a newbie on your SWAT team - that's it!), a large portion of the game is consumed with weapons training, listening to descriptions of weapons and tactics, and being yelled at when you didn't follow an instruction that wasn't ever very clear to begin with.
There are three scenarios (they start at 21:16) that you must participate in, and these are by far the best part of the game. Actually, they're the only parts that resemble a game. These scenes look and sound fantastic for 1995 - the game is running on a heavily beefed up version of the SCI2 engine that ran Phantasmagoria and Gabriel Knight 2, and the digitized sprite actors look far better here than they did in Phantas, GK2, and the older PQ games. Unfortunately, whatever fun you might get from these scenes is sucked out by the unforgiving gameplay. Granted, police work is unforgiving, but when it's put into a game and the game never really explains itself properly, things get frustrating, then boring, quite quickly.
Sometimes you're told to cover someone, so you click the arrow, only to find out that the up arrow that you assumed would move you forward for whatever reason put you in the line of fire. Yay, inconsistent and confusing camera angles! Other times, you'll have to use hand-signals, but the game doesn't really tell you if it registered your command, so sometimes you'll randomly fail because of the utter lack of feedback and the inconsistent input window timings. It's fun to run through the scenarios once you know how to finish them, but how many people ever got that far?
I got this the day it came out - I was soooo excited! PQ was always my jam, and I loved Sierra's FMV titles - this would be perfect! And then I installed the game. Ugh. About a week later I sent the game to Sierra (under their satisfaction guaranteed policy) with a letter describing what a scrap heap the game was, and requesting a copy of Torin's Passage to replace it. About six weeks later, Torin appeared, and I was far happier.
This game is a clear marker in my mind of the sharp turn Sierra made around this time. After Phantasmagoria and GK2, they really went into a decline. They had sporadic hits afterward (LSL7, Rama...), but the Williams' departure was looming, and when they went, they took the spirit of the Sierra that I had known and loved as a kid with them.
And seriously, Darryl Gates, Los Angeles wasn't enough for you? You really had to lay waste to one of my favorite PC series, too?

There is something satisfying about 90's videogames. Dont know how to explain specific. But it's so charming, and deep somehow. The voiceacting could be debated. But it's just soo charming too see these pixels and the typical fatscreen computers and the majestic accent these people have. These games are fun for some reason.

I mean by 1995, point-and-click games were somewhat dying. SWAT 2 became an RTS to appeal to a broader audience. Then FPS games became the most popular genre and it would be financially fatal to not jump on the bandwagon.

The CDs were the worst part of the game. I remember distinctly dying on a mission, and then to rub it in, you had to eject the CD, find the right one out of the paper folder, put it in, wait for it to spin up and load, just to be told you screwed up. Then having to repeat the whole swap again to retry the mission.

1:24:21 Classic Sierra bullshit. So despite having one of your guys watching the room and having his weapon trained on it, he still lets the surprise perp get off a shotgun blast and down you when you try to regroup too early. Yet the perp does nothing the next go around when one of your own comes in to secure the injured office worker.

Agreed, the game was basically just a bunch of video puzzles and during each call up scenario, it's never clear what exactly you are supposed to do to complete the mission successfully. This is the last of the Police Quest series. This game was meant to be the story simulation game and actual learning to be Swat police. So this game was truly meant for the ones to learn and play this game right.

Yeah, it's a real pain in the ass. After you see what you're supposed to do and work backward from there, things _do_ make a certain amount of sense, but figuring out exactly what to tell everyone to do is frustrating as hell. Like, okay, yeah, it makes sense that the team should stop when they reach a corner because you want to be sure they're not overextending into an unsurveyed area without having a plan, but figuring out that telling them to stop is what you're supposed to do when everyone keeps getting killed for seemingly no reason? Yeah... not cool.

This game is a masterpiece, but not for the reasons it's trying to be. I swear, this whole game is ripe for the meme picking. Here's some of my favorites so far. 14:23 - An instruction video of a man crawling around on the ground with a mirror taped to a stick. 30:11 - Scooby-Doo and the gang swiggity swooty up to the house. 31:56 - Wooden gate's locked. Guess we should use the battering ram. 33:04 - You round a corner and find the crazy little old lady. You coax her into arrest and Final Fantasy-esque end of battle music plays. 1:01:57 - 360 no-scoped. Even the hostage doesn't know what just happened. 1:08:10 - Umm, I don't swing that way mister. 1:10:25 - Excuse me, I don't need your sass. 1:24:23 - Whole room gets shotgunned. Surprisingly decent rendition of Amazing Grace plays. 1:34:37 - "You'll be back in the saddle in no time" *schlorps off screen* and of course 1:34:47 - The "behind the scenes" credits roll with definitely not Wave Race music playing in the background. You also had rather funny save game names. Thanks for the laughs my dude. Stay awesome. p.s. - this game gets a 10/10 from me for having a dedicated "slice pie" button.

The game was so hard and convoluted I kept fucking up the training, and when i was able to get to the granny, I kept getting shot. This game followed me for all these years (I'm 31 now) and every now and then I'll think about the game. Finally decided to check if KZbin had some gameplay so i could re-live the nostalgia and to see if the game was really a convoluted mess, or if i was just a retarded kid. I'm glad to know that the game was just cryptic as fuck all this time. Despite not being able to accomplish jack shit in the game as a kid, I remember actually having fun playing it. I had this game back in the day. Swat 2, 3, and 4 were excellent games but the original Swat was basically just a bunch of point and click video puzzles. Most of the game consisted of idiot proof weapons drills which is simply click the mouse on the target. There were three different callup scenarios and most callups are just repeats of the same one except with you playing a different role and with the suspect behaving differently. The biggest problem with the callups is that the game does a very poor job revealing what exactly you are supposed to do to complete the mission successfully.

I think don't think the intention of the "tutorials" was for them to truly be tutorials. The older PQ games are heavily focused on procedure and the day to day of police officers on duty. So with SWAT Officers, they don't have patrols obviously, so it's just training, lectures, and more training until they're needed. Doesn't mean it was a good idea, mind. Just that it fits with the intention of the series by my opinion.

I didn't play any SWAT games until I saw lots of Swat 4 videos that I bought the game on Ebay. It's a fun game though a bit hard to keep your squad not get shot up or injured. I remember my older brother struggled with this game as he had trouble getting past 1st level (woman with health issues and she could be hiding in backyard gate or master bathroom) as he gets killed or wrong actions. Eventually he played SWAT 2 and 3. I think he likes SWAT 3. You should try the reboot of King's Quest.

Sorry I know it's a super late reply, but I did play the news KQ. I loved it - at least until I learned that I got gypped out of the epilogue episode because I had bought the season pass. I recorded all of the episodes though, if you'd like to see it. It's in my PS4 playlist.

I had this game as a kid and never got past the 1st mission. There was a bug in it. Even when I passed the mission with no casualties and took the granny into custody, I would go to the next mission briefing and it would just be Mission 1 all over again :(
@Prisoner416
@Prisoner416 4 жыл бұрын
That's not a bug, often the same mission would activate butt you'd go through it a different way. The same mission has multiple outcomes in a few. Such as the grandmother being armed or not.

@NintendoComplete

@@vgaoct91 I dunno, I played this from the original CDs, and I have an original print run copy (in the big double-disc CD case, original Sierra big box) so if the game was patched later on, I wasnt using those patches. I'd expect that the GOG version would have them already applied if there were any.

@@NintendoComplete I'm trying to watch your videos to successfully complete the game, the good old games version I'm playing and it seems like the game will just repeat the first mission over and over again if you shoot her and it's justified to the point where I just deleted the save because I thought it wouldn't let me progress. It seems like from all the walkthroughs of this game the only scenario that lets you progress is if you catch her rather than shoot her. Any tips? Thank you.

No, Sonny Bonds would have been older considering he was a veteran on the force and a Sergeant in Police Quest 3. Pup is too young. Sonny Bonds is an available character in Swat 2 though. He also makes an appearance in Swat 4 as an instructor.
