Polish Star Christmas Ornament Tutorial

I’m 65 and clearly remember making them before I was in the first grade so I had to be about 5. That’s the last time I made them until today. My grandma was from Slovenia and my Pappy was German. We made many different Christmas ornaments.

We made these in 5 grade (1959) from Christmas wrapping paper. It was thicker in those days. Thank you for showing this project and reminding me how to do it! Love....

I made these Polish stars 45 years ago when they were demonstrated in Bette Homes and Gardens. I still have a few of them. I used solid color foil wrapping paper, they had a colorful, shiny finish, ready for hanging on the Christmas tree. Thanks for the instructions, good to see the craft is still alive.

@Jennlm The hardest part to master is to get the points nice and small and pointy. I find if you put the pencil tip just below the edge of the paper before rolling the edges you get a nice sharp point

i finally finished mine after like 5 days of rolling the triangles with a pencil. Those took a while but the end result is gorgeous. i love them! thanks for this tutorial

These are so beautiful, can't wait to make some for my tree this year. I made 10 different snowflakes for my tree last year about 30 in all and then topped with a very large 3D star. I hadn't decorated in about 20 yrs and was so happy I did last year with many homemade ornaments, it was so much more special. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

I use coloured tissue paper and wallpaper paste. I use a needle and thread to string them all together. I have been making these since I was a child and I am now 50. I just called them spikey balls, me and my friends used to make them to sell to raise money for our girl guide group. I didn't know they were a Polish decoration, so thanks for the information, great to know where they originated.

When I was little I use to make these together with my mom ... we bought 2 faced foil paper from a stationary store . One face was Gold and the other either green or red and the other foil paper was on one side either silver and the other blue or green. Now a days you can find them in many beautiful colors. The nice thing on them was that they were soooo shiny :)) "thanks for posting wonderful work"

Thank you! My Grandma made those when I was a child, I never learned how to do them. I still have quite a few of them. Can't believe they'd be over 20 years old. Over 25 years ago I use to work in a factory in Canada and we use to do the same flower with the machine though. it use to be like half of this bow and with an adhesive on the back to be put on presents, I wish I had a picture of it , I would have posted it so you can see... Now I know how to do it by hand Thanks for the tutorial

The gold paper was bought as part of a scrapbooking package at the dollar store, it had a few sheets of this plus some coordinating paper. It had the texture of thick wrapping paper.

We had a couple of these on our tree when I was a kid ( I'm a young 53), only ours had been dipped in wax to preserve them from year to year! They may have been my great grandmother's. Awesome! I remember making these in camp as a little girl and I loved them then. I tried to remember how to make them last year when I wanted to make my own ornatments for our little tree, but couldn't remember how to, just couldn't get it. Polish traditional folk decoration,used to decorate counrty houses. Star is a part of complex structure called" pająk".Later star was adapted as a christmas tree decoratin. Thanks for reminding me how to make this - Dziękuję.

@Ilovethemountains09 You would just have to scale the center circle down to match the size of the larger circle. It just has to be big enough to hold the pieces together when you cinch them together at the end. You may have to experiment to get the right size

You can use any kind of paper you want as long as it takes a crease well and is thick enough to be durable.

@mysteryglo Thicker paper makes them more durable and the paper will withstand the folding and curling without tearing or the colour coming off (like with some cheaper wrapping paper). Cardstock would probably be too thick and too hard to fold properly.

@DaCrazyOne25 It is hard on the fingers, that's true. I use a fantastic white craft glue that I use for quilling that dries SUPER fast, I buy it from quillingsuperstore with a dot and a com. The tacky glue would be better. It also depends on the paper, I used hot glue for the very shiny/plasticky silver paper one (this also hurts the fingers).

brilliant video, very clear, and you made it visually easy to see how things were done too. You mentioned that the twine/string frayed easily. If you paint a little clear nail varnish/nail polish on the end of the string and let it dry it wont fray making it easier to thread the needle.

@ilovstodance You need paper that is fairly stiff, but not too stiff. That's why scrapbooking paper is good, but you are right, it can be expensive. Plain old printer paper works well too and it comes in different colour. Our dollar store has a lot of cheap scrapbooking stuff in it. Gift wrapping paper can be very good if it is thick enough. I tried it with cheap Christmas paper and it didn't work well.

@tweetnes I used my quilling glue, that dries nice and quick. I did use hot glue for the silver shiny ornament, it can be a little messy, but it works.
