There is a bit of a craze of these being made in Japan so I thought it would be a cool project for my son ..but he had other ideas !!! So I had to try it myself with help from the lathe ..which to be honest didn't help much !!!

easiest way of doing that too is dump the aluminum foil ball in the dryer with wet clothes lol i got a lot of strong used balls (deformed though, not exactly round) a friend of mine taught me. some did cracked, but the others were perfect, just needs some polishing but it doesn't matter, it's still awesome. i stopped doing that though because my laundry still gets static electricity lol awesome job though!

I'm a year late, but aluminum foil is a very good thermal isolator so it would be really hard to heat up the popcorn without melting the ball in the process.

It's actually not. The point is to take your time and have patience and perseverance. It's a project that's meant to really focus yourself and your time, esp if you aren't using automatic tools with it. Kids in Japan are doing it with only a hammer and sandpaper. It's almost like a meditative act.

Im wondering if you could possibly, while youre rolling up the aluminium foil, to put some kind of object inside the middle so if you do a whats inside video, there would be some textural differences or something? Or even find a way to ulternate a material thats a different colour within the layers of the tin foil to get a cool effect when its cut upen? I feel like that would make a cool series of videos
