I've sand scratched rod bearings in the past on a diesel skidsteer engine . Didn't cause any problems I could see or hear .

That is super interesting. I understand a dullness but unevenly dull I do not. When reading the bearing failure literature from Mahle it shows just how extreme the tolerances are. That the thickness of oil is practically nothing. I would expect extreme uniformity of the bearings which in my mind would look polished or evenly dull.

I'm surprised how many people will take bearings out of a box and not even clean them up newspapers great ideal and don't forget to clean the crank and double check the oil galleys
