You're going to get grief for this detail job, but I did it for a living, and you have worked miracles. The paint is unsalvageable. It's easily 15 years old, low quality, and seems to have been applied by Stevie Wonder. You got a shine out of it. You did well. Without a respray, it gets no better.

Your travails are not in vain Ian! So many channels are cosmetically edited like a Kardashian Instagram page, and it's frankly discouraging to be presented with a parade of ostensibly endless perfection, it puts you off ever having a go. But a video like this, where you keep in the hard stuff and the setbacks makes it all seem much more possible.

Hubnut you're awesome! You're supposed to clay bar one panel at a time using a proper spray lubricant, not water. Water isn't as slick and destroys the clay bars longevity. I know this because I used to own a car detailing business in my younger years. Glad that you're making the SKoda shine. Never polish or wax in circles because it shows the swirl marks. 😣 I'm still proud of you for making the effort. Ive been waiting for this video for the longest time. I have detailed or valeted cars since 1989 in one form or another and was a former spray painter for 17 years , it's got single stage paint, which means it has no clear coat / lacquer top coat hence the oxidisation and paint transfer onto the pads. The paint is always thinner on the edges of panels and swage lines as you found out. 10/10 for perseverance and entertainment , brave effort indeed. 👍👍

NOOO...you have to use lubricant with your clay bar! Most people use diswashing soap mixture in a squirt bottle! If you rub the clay bar over the paint without it it *will* be terribly "grabby". And you never use swirl motion, always straight-forward-n-back. But props for giving a Skoda a love that Skodas rarely get. I could never understand the mentality "Bah, its cheap, I dont care for it". Every car needs TLC.

*Back in the old day, we didn't even try to polish a car that is so dull.* A clear coat finish restoration is possible up to the point where clear coat failure begins. But in this case, we would wash it, take a panel like a bonnet of. Then give it a very, very light wet sand with extremely fine sandpaper. Degrees, it, mask it off. Spray 3 thin layers of clear coat on it and you're done. We did this outside under the carport. Always turn out better than polishing. But it really was an art to sand it so light that the paint wasn't coming off. Often you keep spots were you burnt through.

Hi Ian, I think you did an excellent job. It's important to remember that whatever is claimed on the tin or by the keyboard experts, all you can actually achieve is a shinier version of the paintwork you started with. The only alternative is to use a more aggressive process to remove the repaint layer, but then you find out why it was repainted, which may be worse than what you have now. The Skoda looks fine to me, so don't let it get you down.

Your seemingly endless patience clearly has no boundaries. That is exactly the sort of crazy pointless job I'd have tackled too, for reasons beyond normal comprehension. However, I know my patience would have been exhausted after the bonnet 'restoration' . Finishing the job with the aid of half a gallon of petrol and a match would have been my next consideration, but no, you couldn't do that to a lovely old Skoda. I think I may possibly have considered a pot of paint and a brush to be honest. Now there's a challenge for future reference! I've seen the astounding results that can be achieved by a bloke with a Triumph Herald at a show I attended at Uttoxeter race course a few years ago. He assured me it had been hand painted, but I struggled to believe him, it really was that good. :o

Twenty odd years of company cars meant that my experience has been based on such efforts just before the cars went back to the leasing company sort of every three years Ian. Admittedly on newer paint but all I ever did was use some cutting compound the colour magic polish afterwards followed by a good buff up. Always made a 90k + mile 3 year old car look pretty damn good to be honest even though it was done outside normally in Feb/March Biggest issue was the biggest car - an Insignia. I got half way round and looked up and my heart sank to see how much car I still had to do lol. At the end of the day I got zero feedback so no idea whether this work saved me any penalty charges from leasing companies !

Another entertaining video and a true master class in car detailing! This video made me chuckle, your description of witches especially. Anyway, red is one of the worst colours to rejuvenate as the pigments are terrible once oxidation sets in. The way to go about it is to go round the car in 3 or 4 attempts. Each pass will improve, granted if the paint itself is bolloxed that'll not help the end result or enthusiasm but if the starting point isn't as bad (as with Myrtle) then you should be able to get a good result. I've done a good few paint corrections as part of my job and there's always one car that no matter how much time is put into it still looks crap. I had a Corsa two weeks ago do this to me. Black and knackered.
@Bucharestguidedtours5 жыл бұрын
Dont loose heart in re finishing this, the cold weather is not helping you, makes it murder to remove as the product doesn't dry correctly. I think that's solid paint, there was a change in paint in the mid to late 90s, oil to water based, solid paint is harder to work with , in my opinion, always stiffer, especially to come off, seems a bit gunky sometimes.. I think it needs a good hard cut, the first stuff you used by hand looked good, get some on your orbital polisher and just do one panel at a time, damp pad, and golden rule, don't lift the pad off when spinning.The orbital is relatively safe, low to medium speed, even with G3 as long as you don't go mad. 3M fast cut is a belter . And a lesson learned there, Colour M*gic ( other brands available) is not suitable for this job at all, or possibly any job. The Skoda is a good looking motor and i think that paint has some potential in it. Cut it , finish polish and then seal it. I'm very jealous of your big font plates, I have a 1989 Escort (bad word, I know your not a ford man ) and have been looking for for ages.. keep up the good work , best channel on KZbin .

I felt your frustration and even though I worked as an auto detailer for a period of time in my younger days, I still don't bother with buffing cars. Old base-only paint (no clear coat) is a beast to work with and it will probably look even worse in the sunlight (on those rare occurrences that you might actually see the sun in the UK). However, it looks at least 100% better than when you started so feel proud!

Sorry to be late to the party - slowly catching up on your past videos and enjoying them very much. Agree with you re: pressure washers on cars. Forces water into places where it would never normally go - not to mention destabilizing paintwork - particularly on Citroen metallic colours with lacquer which I learned to my cost! I now wash car by hand - very occasionally use a carwash but politely refuse the pre-wash blast from the bloke with pressure washer at the ready. Also affected my alloy wheels too - again. lacquer peel which, complete with in-ground brake dust makes for a terrible sight! Lesson learnt! Well done for persevering with the polishing. Considering the state of the paintwork it came up really well. Cheers. Vivian

Yes, polishing cars is hard work. I polish my (small modern eurobox) car around once a year. I really don't like doing it, but I really really don't like when cars rot due to road salt, so I grin and bear it. I usually spend a good two to three hours at it making sure I've had a good meal and plenty of hydration beforehand, and crack on. Looks beautiful afterwards and as I do low miles it does last most of the year. Obviously best done as winter approaches. I got into the habit of doing it above and beyond a simple wash and wipe after owning an old car that had faded paintwork which needed semi regular upkeep. Not a bad habit to get into, but I don't envy you having a red car!

That’s the way Ian, use what you’ve got in your garage first before investing in new products. Look, I think all I’d do is get a can of paint and spray the roof, do a light cut by hand to blend it in and cut and polish the rest of the car the way you have. Given the quality of paint the finish will never be perfect and I daresay a total respray is overcapitalising on the car. First impressions it now looks tidy which is all you want. I've been detailing for a couple of years since retiring from my real job having spent years looking after friends and families cars. Having bought good quality machines I can honestly say that one looked like it was very much out of balance and wouldn't have done you any favours. Red ,as others have said, can be a real pig to sort out. Especially old red, even more so old unloved red, particularly old, unloved, poorly resprayed red so you gave it your best shot and it looks at least like you've tried. 10/10 for effort.

best way to bring red paint back up is to rub down with warm soapy water with 1200 wet and dry dry off and put G7 ferecla on and polish with a polish head on a machine ,you won't need to press on too hard and remove excess that is leaft on the panel with a cloth and then put wax on by hand and buff off by hand ,job done,i used to be a paint sprayer so know that this works Ian.
