In ep. 247 of the Parker's Pensées Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Kevin Vallier to discuss his new book, All the Kingdoms of the World. We get into all sorts of fun political philosophy and different forms of radical religious movements on the rise today and why they want to fight against the tenets of classical liberalism.

Just finished the episode. Really enjoyed it! As a Catholic, I have some concerns about Integralism that I share with your guest.

As a former Catholic (cultural, but parochial 1-5th grade, Baltimore Catechism), I appreciated the PP interview and exposure to Dr. Vallier's work in the realm of political philosophy. I did order his book and begin reading. As an Evangelical of nearly 55 years (disagree with any and all forms of sacramental/baptismal regeneration), it did strike me as evident how terrestrial the nature of organized Christendom, whether Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or Protestant. The Evangelical experience I had was highly supernatural and CELESTIAL. Following my simple faith (Romans 10:13), and subsequent severe persecution for that faith, my direct encounter with the Risen Christ in His Shekinah Glory left an indelible mark.

Interesting. Not Christian myself but I’m looking at different perspectives to scope out territory. Bit interesting to hear Vallier’s perspective.

Oh wow this is amazing, and relevant. I am such a fan of dr vallier and havr been anxiously awaiting his critique of integralism.Part of the reason i left catholicism was over the radical integralism movement that i saw that was growing. Its taken hold of some mainstream theologians within catholicism. Some catholics, like stream writer john zmirak, who is amazing, do their best to keep this movement from gaining steam, but alas it is growing. Anyway, big fan, and awesome content. Thank you both.

I haven’t watched the video yet, nor do I know much about integralism, nor am I catholic, but may I ask why you’d leave over political philosophy? Wouldn’t the core truth statements of the religion be more important?

Some have done so. kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHnapWl5m5loq7csi=Bp4YoaSwoVtQWcjo. DBH and Milbank both label Integralism “incipiently fascistic” in the interview I pasted.

Every twenty or so years our culture goes through a lil pagan/wiccan hiccup, where the kids of religious types explore new age-y type spirituality. Happened in the 70's, the 90's, and now. It's very superficial though, most don't go that deep, they do it for amusement mainly. A small minority replace the religion they got from their parents with paganism, and a small minority return to the religion of their parents. Most just become non-believers or sorta cultural Christians that don't practice the faith in any real way but continue with a few of the rituals, i.e. celebrating Christmas and Easter. The secularization trend is real, and it is significant.

I just re-read schaeffers a Christian manifesto. So much of what he’s saying resonates with that book as it pertains to the history of faith and politics.

For an opposing view, see McNabb, Tyler. "God and Political Theory", Cambridge Elements (Cambridge University Press, 2022). McNabb defends a form of Catholic integralism.

There are different forms of integralism. Feser breaks them into soft, moderate, hard. Critiques abound for all of these forms, but at the end of the day, the way i see things inevitably going is that a soft integralism will inevitably become hard integralism, because there are no checks and balances (nothing convincing that ive read) in integralism to stop things from going from soft to moderate to extreme. You can read fesers blogs for his steel manning of it. Id highly recommend john zmirak as he has 4-5 articles on the stream critiquing it, and it perhaps is more meaningful since he is within traditional catholicism. He also has a couple videos where he talks to people like eric metaxas and others about integralism.

@ It is inconvenient to hold unpopular opinions...but it would be so good. You could do a follow up with Gerard Casey (Catholic) or Bob Murphy (reformedish) who are both anarchists yet within the Christian tradition.
