Klingons, likely. Cardassians, maybe. I think the Romulans would be far more intelligent and circumspect. They would use a massive and sophisticated intelligence apparatus which would let them effectively know when an Ensada militant farted, before the militant himself would know. And they would ruthlessly and chillingly either make an example of the militants they captured, or else, make them instruments to capture more, and stay ahead of any terrorist threat.

it seems absurd to me that the guy was just outed as a terrorist guy amongst the police force who hates him more than they want to be alive and they let him walk out because of some starfleet ninny who is offering his people stuff(tech? medical supplies? weapons?) for the lives of 1 starfleet person. Nah that wouldn't fly. That'd be like a canadian telling the USA to release bin laden so he can go home scott-free and tell saddam they want to give him supplies for like, trudeau. @@hansolo631 the better analogy, after which this was modelled, I believe, is the conflict between the IRA and the UK. Number one, the number killed was in the single digits. Number two, this was hardly the first such attacks, they have been many, many similar attacks previously. Number three, it’s weird that whatever the government was doing, it was not working. Finally, number four, there was a lot of pressure to negotiate from a higher power, the Federation. Whereas, none on the US.

2:45 Imagine if Data's mention of Irish reunification of 2024 turns out to be accurate history. I could see it. Also, they could sell a very daring, unsettling thesis there because it was Data who suggested it. Although it's actually much simpler. It's not like that it is a feasible option, but that it is the only one left, at least for a much less powerful faction. It is an act of despair while trying to maintain some self-respect/dignity. (Which might backfire.)
@szahmad2416

Terrorism does work, unfortunately, if performed in an effective manner. Not in the immediate short term, perhaps. But certainly, played effectively, in the long term. Everyone will remember the time of terrorism and will take all measures to avoid it, and that includes making massive concessions to the terrorists...who may have, or may purport to have, reformed by that time into a more acceptable political entity. If terrorism is NOT the main tactic, but a supplementary one, which bolsters other tactics, like attacking military and security assets, and widespread protests/riots, the terrorist/militant group basically makes it clear to all that they are CAPABLE AND WILLING to turn to terrorism, but will not unless...reasons. The Ensada did the opposite of that. After repeated bombing campaigns, they kidnapped the doctor from a third party, then tried to destroy the flagship of said powerful third party, then kidnapped its captain. They effectively threw the Federation right into the government's hands and would not relent on their campaigns to terrorize the population without giving them any reason to believe they could or would change. Ultimately, those campaigns fail.

The issue with "we're willing to negotiate" is that it will encourage people to kidnap others again, again and again. Say you are walking down the street and you see through a shop window someone who is wearing a mask and points a gun at a till worker and stretches out a hand in a gesture that clearly means that the person with a gun will kill the till worker if the till worker doesn't give up money. Then the thief takes the money. Now as a result of what you witnessed the idea of using fear to get what you want is reinforced in your mind. If you choose to be selfish enough, you would then do as the armed thief did and the cycle would be perpetuated. So yes fear works, but only when it's accompanied by power or deciet, and only in the short term, and it can have horrible side-effects. Once people learn the lesson that fear works, then they will use it again and again and often for purposes that are selfish and savage, until eventually only the ones who are doing the intimidating are free and everyone else is a slave. Where does it end? When people grow large enough consciences to not behave selfishly without fear of reprisals or hope for reward? Well that cannot be made to happen. You cannot pay, intimidate or talk kindness into people. If society is based on the belief that people should behave generously and tolerantly towards others for no reason other than sheer self-congratulation for doing so, then we are genuinely civilised. If on the other hand society is based on desire for reward and fear of reprisal, then we are not genuinely civilised beings, we're just beasts on leashes. We must not teach the lesson that intimidation works, or we will spend the rest of our lives after each others throats when we're not too busy cowering in our beds.

In this vain, I'd argue the following: Pre-Disco era, Star Trek was known for being pragmatic about its discussion of social/societal, economic and political discourses. It may have taken sides in the form of Starfleet but generally the crew (the protagonists) were educated enough in the broad matter that they always considered every side, its historical significance again in broad terms as applying to specific incidents is an extreme improbability, before acting on their chosen, or duty-stated, course of action. The idea was to get an audience to look at a broader perspective, that while there are evil things and actions that are irredeemable, some similar actions may end up being acceptable. Picard's line where he says he "never subscribed to the belief that political power flows from the barrel of a gun" and seconds later acquiesing to Data's examples shows he knows what can happen and there can be net benefits, in this case to terrorism, but as he points out at the close, it isn't a question that has any kind of significant answer either. Meanwhile, over on The West Wing, and the episode you quoted that aired nearly a decade after this episode, there was a direct and immediate desire to push a specific agenda to not give in to the fear that had pierced the American public from actions that had happened a few weeks prior. Because of that agenda, this piece as you quoted was designed not to be pragmatic but to galvanize. Whether that intent was malicious, seditious or innocuous will unfortunately be left to the scribes of history. The point unfortunately is that everything in the present is written for its time and is always looked back on with the critical eye instead of the accepting one. If you want proof of that, just look at the warnings that networks must play before airing the classic Looney Tunes.

@everyonethinksyoureadeathm5773 2 жыл бұрын
@@SSPerfectChaosRCT I think you can argue for both. In TNG, each of those had a clear objective, the security of independence. While in West Wing, no one knew what the terrorists wanted, even after 9/11 their objectives were so vague other than to cause harm and fear. They weren't fighting for independence in fact that group was the oppressors inside their own nation. So in essence Data is right in his observation, and Picard is also right that we've yet to reason out the why because you have some groups with an objective and others who dont.

You do realise the Taliban are taking over Afghanistan RIGHT NOW as NATO just withdrew entirely? The terrorists won. The communists in China who overthrew the nationalist government after China was battered by Japan in WW2 were terrorists and they're in control of China to this day. The American colonists rebelling against Britain in their war of independence were terrorists. We in the west just have been conditioned to associate the word with brown people wearing towels around their head carrying Kalashnikovs. And ofc... It's only terrorists when they're fighting against a government the West backs. When it's going against a not so friendly or hostile government, it's "freedom fighters".

Political power _does_ flow from the barrel of a gun. Political power is, by its very nature, coercive. Those that worship such power turn a blind eye to the fact that every government action contains a veiled threat: Obey or your life is over. Sometimes, it means death. Sometimes, it just means that everything you've worked for in your life is taken from you. You never really owned your own life. It was on lease from the government, with the terms being that you do as they wish, when they wish.

People accept it, not because they're afraid of the government, but because they fear the uncertainty of losing a government. There will always be those willing to use violence to gain power. The last thing most people would want is to be caught in the middle when those power-hungry people start fighting for control.

To me, terrorism doesn't exist. If you're called a terrorist in the classical sense, it just means that you use a form of irregular warfare that your enemy hates and fears because they can't defend themselves from it. That your small group is humiliating a government and all it's military, making them look impotent. Well so what? It's war, there's no point whining "No fair!" when the other side has an advantage.
@foxymetroid
@foxymetroid 2 жыл бұрын
It does exist, but the term gets misused. Terrorism is attacking a civilian population directly and intentionally with the goal of instilling enough terror (hence the name) that they force the government in question to change. Attacking the government's forces directly is not terrorism. Attacking an oppressive police force is not terrorism. Blowing up a marketplace is terrorism.

A good response to Data's inquiry about terrorism would be to first mention the difference between violence that will likely harm more civilians than enemy combatants and the selective targeting of key enemy personnel and resources. Secondly, bring up the idea that the kind of people that are willing to harm civilians to get their way shouldn't be appeased as it will only encourage them to keep doing it. Thirdly, the word terrorism reminds us that the point is to make people so afraid of you that they give you what you want. As soon as that fear fades, or they perceive a weakness they can exploit, you may lose even more than you originally gained.
