In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 6 Topic 13 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 6 (1865-1898).
Politics in the Gilded Age were lethargic and corrupt. Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats pushed a strong legislative agenda. That is until the Populist Party showed up and woke them from their slumber.
On the city level, politics was dominated by political machines, the most notorious of which was Tammany Hall in New York led by the infamous Boss Tweed. Political machines corrupted the political process, to be sure, but they also provided benefits to immigrants stuck in low-wage jobs.
If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly.
This video is aligned with the AP U.S. History Curriculum and Exam Description for Unit 6 Topic 13, and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.

i haven't learned a single thing all year and i've been watching your videos since friday from unit 1 til now (hopefully i'll be able to watch up to unit 9 by wednesday, digital exam day). thank you so much for making these!!!! :D surprisingly i find it very interesting seeing how america developed over time, and i am starting to see how it will eventually develop to what it is now. anyway, will you be making videos for AP european history? because i really regret not watching your videos sooner.

Politics in the Gilded Age - Laissez Faire >Government was hands off from regulation - Democrats >Mainly southerners >Championed states rights and segregation >Counted on votes from large city political machines and growing immigrant population - Republicans >Mostly northern >Industrial >Black people, middle class, business men, and protestants voted for them - Patronage >No party had any deep agenda >Winning elections and awarding federal jobs to supporters - Civil Service >Getting jobs in the federal government >Practice came under fire after assassination of James Garfield >President Act of 1881; Replaced patronage with competitive organization - Gold Standard >Federal government only could print the amount of money that was backed by value of gold >Farmers and entrepreneurs argued against this because they could pay debts with inflated dollars - Tariffs >Much of the federal government was funded by tariffs >Tariffs were enforced due to Civil war but the government kept enforcing them after >Protective tariffs; Tariffs with the goal of making domestic products cheaper and more desirable - Financial burden for consumers - Populist Party >Sought to work for the people and correct the gross concentration of economic power held by the elite bank and trusts >Omaha Platform - Direct election of senators - Use of initiatives and referendums which allowed the people to propose and vote on legislation - Unlimited coinage of silver - Graduated income tax - Eight hour week day - Political Machines >Political parties came under control of corrupt political machines >Groups of people who knew how to get votes for their party >Bosses of the top of political machines rewarded faithful with jobs >Tammany Hall; political machines run by Boss Tweed - Organized the needs of businesses, immigrants, and the poor so the community flourished - Did this to put the community in debt to them so they would vote for them - Tweed stole money and committed fraud
